Hey Acid hate to break it to ya but here where i live in Montana it gets cold. I know what its like to nearly freeze to death in the mountains. It doesn't take long for hypothermia to kick in. Shit happens and unfortunately it can happen to anyone. Bright or not bright lol it don't matter. We dont really fully know the situation Valfar was in. I've been in several situations where i came close to freezing to death.

the translation in the video was a bit inaccurate. I can see why, there is a lot of words even I don't understand, the Sogndal dialect is difficult to understand since it has been isolated for so many years. I love it though, it is a very poetic dialect and is probably the closest thing we Norwegians can get to a somewhat understandable old norse (its not old norse but it sounds like it)

An old favourite of mine, I got the chance to see them live once before Valfar died... was a good show.
Like a bunch of their songs this is based on local history, in particular around the time in the 1180s when there was a local rising against the rule of king Sverre; some of the band members' distant ancestors took part in this, some were killed, and the survivors lost wealth and influence... 800+ years may seem a long time to bear grudges, but so it goes.

    AND FINALLY!!
I remember mentioning this song in the first days I subscribed.. And that was some months before that first Tool album reaction week :|
Now we all witness the wonder of one of the greatest folk/black metal bands to date. And to me, they got better with each album 1184 and Likferd are two my of my favorite albums.
    Tragic how we lost Valfar
so early... But the spirit of Windir lives on through this friends in Vreid. Rest in peace man!
As for another Windir song, I'll say "The Spirit Lord". Less folk, but those riffs are awesome. But seriously, every song you'll pick from 1184 and Likferd will be a win. There is no dull moments in these two.
Anther legendary folk/black metal band everyone need to know is Moonsorrow. Yet another one which keeps getting better with time. For them, I'll go with "Pakanajuhla" first, because it's a great folk/BM example. And continue with "Hiidenpelto including Häpeän Hiljaiset Vedet" (Yes, it's a freaking long name). But the song is epic and a good testimony to their early albums. As for a recent one, try "Ihmisen Aika (Kumarrus Pimeyteen)" from the last album. Again, they really achieved something great with it, lots of progression in their sound.
True, I know you would be able to reach to any of these songs, but it's posted for everyone ;)

  • @ToaGatanuva

your pronunciation of Fagning (Fawning) is spot on
The story goes like this, so grab the popcorn.
During the last half of the 12th century, Norway is going through a civil war; more precisely a dispute between two men claiming they have the birthright to claim the throne.
These two are Sverre Sigurdsson and Magnus Erlingsson. People and dioceses across Norway pick sides. Sogndal (where this story takes place) sides with Magnus. A lot of back and forth finally ends in the ultimate battle at Fimreite in 1184 (Very close to Sogndal, and also explaining the album title of Windir's third album), where first of all Sverre burns down an adjacent village (Kaupanger), and threatens to burn down Sogndal as well. He has thirteen ships with him. When Magnus arrives, he has 26. Though outnumbered, Sverre wins a tactical victory. The battle was the biggest naval battle in Norwegian history, and anywhere from 1800 to 2000 warriors perished. Magnus was among the casualties, letting Sverre claim the Norwegian throne. An utter disgrace for the pepole of Sogndal.
This song explains how the people of Sogndal feel after the battle of Fimreite, and they swear they are going to take to arms and kill Sverre, though this never happened.
I am currently translating all the untranslated song from Windir on Darklyrics. Down below is my personal translation:
You've experienced the land without a king
The longing for free passage is great in such a war
Hard times there have been for this country
But still all remain like in old times
It's the Devil Sverre believes in
With his knowledge and dark arts
But the Devil only supports you for a while
    In the end betrayal awaits
Against Sverre Priest killings shall come
The steel will not rest in its sheath
Indifferent to what gets killed in front of us
Let the people of Sogndal rule their own kingdom
We promise the Gods to secure the victory
I will not bear the king's name in such a land
Where bastard sons can claim the crown with weapon in hand
It's unusual to feed dogs and ravens
    Horrible actions torment his mind
No horrible deed undone, it hurts
Payback awaits your good health is the price
Costly it is to ravage Christian lands with fire

WINDIR are (were) of the few that I would come close to classifying as Prog in Black metal... does not make a bunch of sense, but listen to those shredding guitar leads over and under the sound storm as the song develops! After Valfar passed, the rest of the band went on to form VREID, thus continuing the legacy without exploiting the name they felt belonged forever with the departed leader... A classy thing to do! Btw, the last WINDIR album, "Likferd", roughly translates as "The Last Voyage" - an eerie premonition indeed.
On a more fun note, 11:15 I chuckled when Sori claimed parts of this would make decent running music - no disputing that, except that for SOME parts you'd have to run extremely fast! ;))) This would make music for cross-country champion training! \m/
