    We had a strange squealing noise coming from our furnace one morning, so loud that we could hear it from upstairs. The most common cause of the noise is from one of the blower motors. Specifically it can be from a faulty or bad start capacitor for the larger blower motor. That problem would result in a noise only at startup. Our noise was constant the entire time the furnace blower was spinning.
    After cleaning everything out with a shop vac, i then use compressed air to blow all the insides of the motors out too. Then i cleaned off the blades of the blower fan. And lastly i used 3-in-1 oil and WD-40 to lubricate all the bearings and drive shafts that i could reach.
    The noise went away and we haven't heard it in 3 weeks. Hopefully it was just some dirt/sawdust that got in there and isn't the start of a bigger problem like a bad bearing or motor going bad.

      @1776 Infowars Get the dirt off of the wings inside the squirrel fan by blowing compressed air from a compressor -- canned air is not enough.. even light dust will cause it to spin off balance and cause these issues -- the long it goes the worse it will get until the fan is useless.

      Normally a dirty furnace czn throw the fans balance off. This will create a horrendouse smount of noise. Not ususlly the Capacitor. But if after cleaning everything up it could be the Capacitor. Good luck and clean it well

      If he'd bothered to read the manual, which should be attached to or close to the furnace somewhere (by the owner), it would have shown oiling where the yellow button is. And probably ONLY oiling right there and not every crevice and cranny in sight. I wouldn't trust anyone with a motor if they think the solution of spewing oil 'wherever' is going to fix a squeak or grinding noise.

    • @brutusgallicus3568
      @brutusgallicus3568 4 года назад +1

      That's probably an oil plug but it could be a grease plug. If there's grease in there it should be blue electrical grease. That is the only type grease that should be used in electrical motors.

    • @judyparker8459
      @judyparker8459 4 года назад +3

      @@brutusgallicus3568 I would guess that grease would have a different color, maybe even blue. My furnace manual says the yellow button is for oil and then specifies the type, a heavier variation of 3-in-1 oil, which worked perfectly when the motor started squeaking a bit. 5 drops is all - and no more, says the manual. To squirt oil 'wherever' into a furnace is just asking for trouble, possibly real harm. Would this guy just squirt oil all over his car engine if the oil light came on and not add any to the only place you should? I wouldn't trust this guy with any motor or machine.

    Loved the video. We didn´t do the oil, but vacuuming out the dust, grit and grime, saved the day during our bitterly cold temperatures here in Texas last week when the temperature outside was around 9 degrees. 32 degrees was considered really cold here in San Antonio, until this cold snap. It stopped all the screeching noise and it allowed us to continue running the furnace during the entire cold snap. A week later it hasn´t made another sound. This saved the day for me and the six family members that came to my house because they were without power and heat! And I won´t fail to have my furnace serviced next year PRIOR to winter!! Thanks so much for posting this!!

    Good job fixing it yourself. My husband fixed a lot of problems but I get nervous with the furnace. After ours clicks and the ignition lights the flame, I hear a second long cello note, kind of sounds like the old aol sound too. I think to me anyway, it sounds like a fan that is stuck at first and then gets unstuck. Oh man. Maybe we should clean it.

    In my experience I have learned not to use WD-40 on motor bearings as it washes the bearings of grease or oil. It acts like a solvent. Really it is best for your family's safety to call a professional if you are unsure and don't understand basic components and how they work

  • @hootinouts
    @hootinouts 2 года назад

    The bearings in the two motors you oiled are typically sealed ball bearings and not Oilite bronze sleeve bearings like you would find in a window fan or floor fan. Even if they were sleeve bearings, by merely introducing more oil, all you are going to do is make matters worse when more sawdust clings to the oil. In the case of ball bearings, the oil is hardly going to get into them if they have seals. Chances are, if the noise is the bearings, an HVAC professional would replace the entire motor. I had to replace the blower wheel in the air handler once as the crimped together sheet metal construction eventually became loose and was making a racket. I bought a replacement from Lau and that fixed the problem.

    Fixed fan scraping noise.
    Hottest day of the year and we have guests... and the furnace fan started scraping. Removing the blower fan is a PITA.
    The set screw wasn't over the flat spot, which let the fan spin on the shaft. As the fan rotates on the shaft, it screws in or out. It moved far enough it was scraping on one side.
    Loosen set screw.
    Put crescent wrench on shaft to hold in place using the flat spot.
    Rotate fan using fingers.
    If scrapes more, wrong way.
    Rotate until until the fan is more centered.
    Align set screw with flat spot.
    Tighten set screw.
    Scraping is gone... on mine.

    My noise is kind of a vibration noise and it happens as soon as the furnace kicks on (not just when air is actually blowing). The other thing is that it doesn't happen when the furnace is blowing cold air (during summer).

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  4 года назад

      That's beyond me. I'm not an expert. But i would suggest trying to narrow down the possible culprits. So you know it isn't the main/big blower. So it is either the small blower or something with the burners. Maybe go down there and try to listen when it kicks on, you might be able to hear exactly where the vibration is. Not sure how safe it is, but you can take off the metal cover and hold in the white push button, then the furnace will turn on with the door off. Then you can see and hear where the sound is emanating.

      @@DaveWirth Thanks for responding. I posted the same response on another video and he (seemed to be an expert) confirmed that it was the induction blower motor. @BrokeCanadian 5 лет назад +1

      That's a bit harsh.
      He was able to blow a little bit of dust out and squirt oil on a bunch of stuff.
      In all seriousness, the problem with this long and unhelpful video is that the issue had already subsided when Dave attempted to fix it. He should have waited for the sound to return, so he could actually 1) film it and show it to his viewers 2) identify EXACTLY where the sound was coming from, instead of making totally wild guesses, and 3) have a higher degree of confidence that he had fixed it, because a before and after comparison could be done within a very small time frame.
      As it stands, we don't know exactly what the origin of the noise was, we have no clue what the problem even sounded like and, as we don't know where the sound was coming from, the scatter gun approach of blowing dust out of everything and oiling everything means we will never know what the problem was.
      This is a good lesson in how NOT to troubleshoot an intermittent problem. Don't fix an intermittent issue when it's stopped happening by itself. Wait for it to come back and THEN work on it!
      At the very least, when he first heard it happening, he could have run down and got some cell phone video footage of the sound (with the panel removed, perhaps with the access panel safety button taped over for a couple of days) before he had time to work on it, so the origin of the problem could be identified. Meh!

      First off it's a water heater. Second is it gas or electric. If its gas ther may be something restricting the flow of gas to the water heater try checking that the gas valve is turned all the way in the ON position. If its electric replace the heating elements and sacrificial rod as they are probably about to go out.

    I'm no expert but that fan and the area around it looks EXTREMELY dirty. I think you said you were vacuuming that all out. That is good but I think it will be caked on those blades by now. You will probably have to clean in between each blade to get it all out.
    Also, if you have that much dirt in that area I think there are coils or something above that probably are caked in dirt also. If that is the case then I wonder if it is restricting airflow and causing stress on the fan... hence no noise when the door is off and no airflow restriction.
    Also do you have a clean normal air filter. Those filters that filter out a TON of stuff will give you cleaner air but they also restrict incoming airflow more. I always go with a medium filter and replace it when it starts to get too dirty.
    Again, I'm no expert... just tossing out some ideas.

    Do not dump oil into your motor, you don't want oil in the windings.

      Maybe bad motor bearing? Maybe something rubbing in the fan impeller or belt?

    WD40 is a very poor lube for this application. 3in1 is ok.

    Umm, the blower motor bearings are bad. When you spin the blower wheel, it should continue to spin and stop slowly. Your’s stopped immediately.

    Sir, you did your best but you are not an expert and did not know exactly what to do. This yellow thing should be removed to oil.

    That furnace is super DIRTY and DUSTY. You should enclose your dusty workshop so the dust doesn't settle in and on your furnace.
