  • So after one year, here is my next video (thanks for all the encouraging positive comments on my first one!). Just a little temporary 1 gauge setup with clockwork trains, all from the 20s and 30s (except for the cars, which are Schuco replicas). In the background, you get a glimpse of my Chinese tin-toy collection.

I had a Wind-up 0 gauge train set like that and I saved my pocketmoney for it plus a little help from Opa, than I got an electric train set. Since it was wartime one could not buy add'l tacks or cars. So I converted the two-rail tracks to three-raul electric tracks and also made some changes for the couplings to combine the two train set's cats. Christmas 1941 my dad build me a lovely train station and the year afterwards a control tower to house the powerpack.
    Those were the days.

You cranked the first engine 12 Times and the switcher14 times...impressed with the power and speed of the clockwork mechanism!

Beautiful quality toys and workmanship for the 30's. These were made to last and to be passed down generational, real family heirlooms. Thanks for making this video, very educational.

The grandaddy of garden railroading as we know it.
Good to see 'em running around and being played with, as they were meant to be.

There are collectors out there who would be aghast that you would run such a mint set, I applaud it, that's what they were meant for :D

These tinplate trains are built like tanks anyways. Besides, they were always meant to be played. One of the best ways to keep something in mint condition *is* to run it (With proper maintenance of course)

Absolutly, i understand if it's a museum collection in absolute mint condition or something like that, but i run and maintain all locomotives in my collection, most of them where realy worn when i got them, but i think they will easily be good to go for another 70 Years now, basically all i needed to do was to clean them up a bit and put som fresh oil on the gears (+ soldering back a few demolished tin plates that where originaly softsoldered on a locomotive that looked like someone dropped it on a concrete floor and accidentally stepped on it in the past, but now it's fit for fight again and after i just carefully bended the pieces back again with my fingers one can barly even spot a dent on it.)

Wunderbar !

i know this is old , but it is still fun to watch. these windup trains along with battery powered trains are closely related to live steam as they seem to behave in almost the same way.
