DO NOT USE Waterproof Smartphone in Sea Salt Water! [Disassembly]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 май 2018
- On my recent trip to Hawaii, I broke two of my smartphones while using them in sea salt water to take videos of corals while snorkeling, I broke my Galaxy S9 Plus and my Pixel 2 XL. In this video, I show you what happens if your smartphone seal breaks in sea salt water and also how to minimize damage from salt water corrosion by disassembling both my S9 Plus and Pixel 2 XL. I've taken all my waterproof phones(with IP67 or IP68 rating) diving in swimming pools and even in 100+ degree temp spa many times but I have NEVER actually broken a smartphone from water until last week. If you absolutely must use your phone in sea salt water, just make sure to rinse it thoroughly BEFORE it dries and also use a toothbrush to clean your USB port as salt water droplets like to stay in there even if you rinse it well. I broke my S9 Plus on day 1 as I didn't rinse the phone and Michael Fisher aka Robert Downy Jr. told me to, then I broke my Pixel 2 XL even rinsing but a very simple fix use a toothbrush to clean USB TYPE C PORT. FML This is my JERRYRIGEVERTHING STYLE VIDEO on salt water on smartphones.

This video was NOT intentional but obviously costing me a lot of money to make, lol, thumbs ups appreciated! Maybe I can get enough views to buy a new phone, thx for the support guys and gals and my chubby puppy squad!
😯 That sucks Max! Do you still have warranty on those phones?
Max Lee Max? Awesome vid 100th like. Hey where can I buy a Genuine OEM S7 Edge battery replacement? Online is all $10 Chinese ones. My Battery is toast from 1,000 of hours of video recording (literally) she drains pretty quick! THANKS MAX
I think I do but not sure if this is covered plus I took it apart already.
Ebay, looks for a good seller.
Hey Max, I was wondering if you could do a video on cheap but good gaming phones maybe?
I want your money back!
Dude, you are here!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Flossy Carter is it ok if i put my phone on pool water?
This is a major major major NO
I wish I had watched it before losining my s10+ to salt water. Just like you described it was the second day when the screen started to flicker and then completely wadted within hours. Couldnt switch it off because it kept restarting. I had the gopro in my bag, with waterproof casing but too lazy to take it out. Learned the lesson.
Informative video, keep up the good work. Cheers
does it ever turn on again?
My current policy on water resistant phones, is that I don't even purposely put them in water any more. I've been randomly burned by poor manufacturing processes and forced to pay out of warranty prices to fix them.
Jeremy Judkins It's a good safety net basically. Better with then without. When I was canoeing I flipped over by mistake (and nearly drowned) and my freaking s6 was fried after that. If I had my current s9, it would have at least a chance to deal with the water.
It's more a safety net than anything. I cringe when i see my sister take her iPhone to the bathroom when she goes for a shower. Think of all that steam getting inside. It's an iPhone 5
Same here. I can't understand how you can provide a guarantee rating and list it as a feature and automatically blame customers for every failure.
I'm going to San Diego in a few weeks so this is perfect timing. I have my first water resistant phone and I was finally excited to use it in water but now I know to keep my phone on the beach... Thanks
Thanks for sacrificing your stuffs & putting the knowledge out there :)
Water proof cases if you going to the beach flossy carter always recommend to used one
Thankfully they are at least fixable...and good on ya LG, I have both the G6 and the V30, glad to know they have what it takes to survive the rough stuff in real life 👍
man wish i could have jumped on a mazing deal on a V20 AA posted few days ago well if the V20 also is as good as it's 1UP bro V30
Yeah saw that but they were refurbished. I got brand new v20 on black Friday for 199.
My g6 fell into salt water and some water did get it . the phone did work fine... But the sensors r not working and there is moisture in the usb port .... Any suggestion on what should be done??
Bummers Max.... Thanks for taking one for the team. My fave action cam is a sony fdrx3000.
Great video as usual Max. Completely off the subject of your video, do you ever plan to review the P20 Pro?
well done max , bit surprised thou i can imagine a lot of people experience this cause i live right on the coast in the uk so i am surrounded by sea water , and when they say waterproof you do think any kind of water so good video
All phones rating are for fresh water. If you don't know why here it is, fresh water is more dense than salty water. It's harder for fresh water to go through the ports but salt water can go through them and damage your phone. Plus the more salinity of the water the more conductive it is which will short circuit your phone.
Edit: Do Not use your phone in salt water! It will most probably break your phone!
Well i dont think it is actually the water or salinity but when salt water dries off, it turns into a nuclear bomb.
Max Lee you can try and clean the ports with high concentrated alcohol.
What about using IPX7 Bluetooth speakers at the beach? Took mine [Honstek IPX7 bluetooth speaker] to the beach recently and there was sand blowing everywhere, ports and buttons were covered but lots of sand got into the speaker grill. Most people only think of water when they talk about IPX badges.
Cyrckle سيركل
The phones are water proof, not water resistant
Indrit Shkupi I think you got it the other way around. They're resistant not water proof.
How deep did you take them?
Edit : 3m, isn't that twice the recommended depth? Double the pressure, probably no wonder it got in through the lens. Not from the usb perhaps. :)
I remember using my S4 Active in salt water. Are the Active phones more resistant to salt water?
I can just see the title of your next video..."DO NOT USE GoPro in seawater" 😁
Lol well i used the enclosure on my gopro anyways.
Water resistant does not mean water proof...
It totally sucks that you went through this....but I'm glad it was you and not me. :)
An awesome PSA reminder of the limits of water resistance. And such a great reminder that folks into doing underwater stuff anywhere really would be better served in the long run by using stuff like a GoPro.
Besides, I don't know about you but I find it kinda hard to talk on the phone when I'm underwater. :D :P
But these are good results I can still fix, these phones are very durable.
+Max Lee: Indeed, great point to reinforce. Gee, both Android phones. Try the same thing with Apple products. lol :D
Yeah I did check out some videos, iPhones are way worse.
HEY can you upgrade RAM on phones if you have RAM (not sure what it looks like) and is there a free portion of the phone like on a computer sometimes that you can put the same RAM into there to upgrade the RAM or is this out of the question?
so a s9 with water damage you can fix it but then you have the motherboard replaced?
This is why I think it makes sense to buy a water proof case as a first layer of protection
I went to Palawan, Philippines and the water messd my phone .It restarts every once on a while on it's own with the notification check charger/USB port then after awhile it restarts on it's own again and back to normal .
yo, what happen after the usb-c type port comming from amazon? does it fix the phone issue? or still dead?
im using s7 flat
and 2 years ago drop to beach water,
1 years later jack audio is off and camera failed (camera off)
can it still be repaired ??
Did you ever fix the Pixel 2 XL? Were you able to get any videos off?
When you say rinse off the phones, does that mean you put them under fresh water to rinse them? I recently dropped my Samsung GS10 in the ocean and it completely shut off and had corrosion in the motherboard. I took it to a repair shop so hopefully they'll be able to retrieve the data.
Do you think would have been fine with a life proof case?
Present problem im facing right now with my samsung a7+ 2017 i did not used it in deep salt water but it was touched by salt water when we were on the beach now the moisture notification always appearing and sometimes the speaker is not functioning until i restart it now question sir is it bad if i let this problems in my phone or should i give it to a technician to fix it tnx sir
Does water resistance stay after 2 years?is my s7 still eater resistant.
Thank you for the expensive experience, I'm surely not gonna do it in my dives or snorkeling
Sadly my Pixel 3xl was in salt water and died. Did yours work again?
My vivo11 same like that im sing in snorkling. My phone can repair or not? Pls answer sir than you
hey, do you need a Graphic Designer?
My Samsung Galaxy A6 got damaged by sea water I'm not tech smart I want to know is there a way I can get my photos off this phone even tho the the phone can't turn on or charge anymore?
Max? Awesome vid 100th like. Hey where can I buy a Genuine OEM S7 Edge battery replacement? Online is all $10 Chinese ones. My Battery is toast from 1,000 of hours of video recording (literally) she drains pretty quick! THANKS MAX
Need a pixel 2 XL glass and digitizer combo with adhesive. If I want a good digitizer where do you go to purchase self replacement?
Ebay or alibaba express.
Ouch..very expensive lesson. But thank you for the warning.
Np but it may end up costing me much less than 1800 dollars, estimate 300 dollars for new motherboard and 40 bucks for USB module, minus waterproofing tho.
This into never gets old, AND...I...LIKE...IT
Please make a video on how to properly dry or rinse your phone after using it on underwater activities
Were you able to fix your S9 afterwards?
What about using a waterproof case.. can i use may phone under seawater?
They are not waterproof. They are water resistant... big difference.
Yeah that is what I meant but they are waterproof in fresh water really.
I think there is always a chance that water can go inside the phone. I think you got unlucky that got inside where the camera was unless salt water played a part in corroding the place where the camera is making the water to go inside.
Joe Leanos salt is eating up the anti water material
This phones are IP68 class. It means that they can go true certain conditions. In resume they withstand a certain quantity of minutes and deep in water. 10ft it's just a lot.
even if its waterproof, salt water or any water with impurities could react diff with the phone.
Max please help ... my Canadian s8 charges but not detected by pc !!!
RIP 2 best phones...
Hey Lee what's about Xperia Xz2
In the electronics world the pressure at 10 feet is massive compared to 1.5 metres for 30mins as per manufacturers specs. It also says wash in fresh water afterwards.
10 meter? This phone just water resistance up to 1.5m right?
Actually it's ok to use a phone or a water resistant watch in salt water to the limit of its IP rating but exposure to air after you leave the water is a problem if you don't rinse with fresh water. Look at the phone manual. It says right there, rinse off your phone after immersion in salt water. Look at your diving watch manual. It says rinse your watch in fresh water after immersion in salt water. Of course you also dived deeper than the 1.5 metres ip68 depth limit. What's 10 feet, 3 metres maybe?
What happens if you put CAT S60 IN SEA WHILE IS WATERPROOF
After damaging two phones, did you really state that it is still okay to use your cellphone to record in salt water?
I've actually wondered about this and now I know. Know a lot of people have started to switch to salt water treatment for their swimming pools and well... Now I know. Sorry for your phones but thanks for sharing the aftermath.
Salt water pools should be fine as they dont really have amount of salt sea water has, negligible amount in comparison, still rinse your phone off well.
Thanks, that's comforting. Rinsing off is still definitely on the list of safeguards now, regardless.
Do they make waterproof cases for waterproof phones? Lol!
Moral of the story dont dip your phone in the water no matter how water resistant and Ip rated the manufacturer say it is.
Interesting where would you get a motherboard for your s9 plus and does your new mother board have to be unlocked or specific to your carrier ?
Motherboard has carrier model so I can get any, 960f preferable but I can put tmobile motherboard if in want.
Thanks Max recently had an issue with my kids iphone 8 im gonna try and replace the charging port first but if it is the motherboard for iphone 8 where would be the best place to get one ? I know ebay but is there other reliable sources your aware of
How will it corrode in 24 hrs?perhaps your unit was water proof defective.
Isn't the IP water resistance rating for cellphones is based on FRESH water?.... IIRC. As far as I know none of them have salt water as the liquid. So things like soda, milk, toilet-water, etc are also exempt. Some of the speaker and microphone membranes rely on surface tension to resist water intrusion, its not a solid wall or barrier. So anything other than pure H2O that can alter the surface tension of the liquid will give different results.
Great video
WOW! ouch. but the jerryrig vibes i dig it! lol and.... learn a lil from the pain of another!?... can't wait for the updates #StayHighOnAndroid
will phones after improve? hmmmm dunno how on earth but i know Sammy & Google gods of course on for better and bigger *aside from over seeing us kinda too much*
What if you put a waterproof-salt water cover??
Max Lee
thumbs up for taking one for the team
When the salt crystallizes it expands the casing. So no phone is really waterproof against saltwater. Unless you can clean the entire enclosure.
What is with pool chlor water
i used my galaxy s5 (prime) in the ocean many times, the only thing that stopped working was the charging port. the phone still works today, but can only be charged with wireless chargers.
BTW, due to you being from korea, do you know anyone who sells the prime variant of the s5? i wish to buy it but can't find one in good shape
It has a flap that shouldn't happen
So basically we can put our +IPX7 smartphones in salt water as long as we rinse it in tap water and dry it afterwards?
Yes but better if u buy a waterproof bag
IP ratings are only for fresh water. Not salt water. Ocean water will most probably break your phone.
Might try and avoid salt water (and sand) at all costs then even with my IPX7 bluetooth speaker. Wonder if its worth buying a hand salt analyser to test water dipping my phone or speaker in. Beach will obviously be salty but more inland areas could be salty too?
Had to look at my usb port after watching this vid... I'm glad there's no corrosion.
Same thing happened when I wore my Fitbit in the water. It started spazzing out, kept vibrating for no reason. Got back to the hotel, filled up a cup with bottled water, put the Fitbit in it overnight, next day dried it out and it was fine
Maybe you're recording too deep in the ocean that your phone can't withstand the water pressure. But my question is whether salt water is more dangerous than plain water because I have Xperia XZ1
Exact same thing happened to me a couple of years ago with my Galaxy S7. Was snorkeling in the Caribbean and basically the phone lasted a few hours before it died completely. Would definately recommend a waterproof case for anyone wanting to do this. It will either keep the phone completely dry, or at least limit the amount of water that comes into contact with the phone.
I got one from Amazon by a company called Temdan. After using it for a couple weeks the phone remained completely dry, so would definately recommend that one. Haven't tried any others unfortunately.
I've used my S9 Plus in salt water when I went to the beach and didnt rinse it off and it still works like new. Only difference is I didn't go 10 feet down lol
Same here I got knocked in but got up right way. Def will survive a quick dunk no problem.
@@8bitsamurai6 how is your phone now ? Is it still working fine
@@Y-Cubalibre Yea it's like day 2 or 3 and everything seems solid no issues that I can tell I did wipe it down with alchohol just kinda get the grim. But never washed with fresh water. Charges and everything. Note 8 def a tank
@@8bitsamurai6 ok cool, thanks for answering!
i used my lg v40 in salt water for like 10 sec and now its not working (its been 8 days now). does anyone got a solution?
Normal water from swimming pool can cause damage too.I used my S9plus in a pool, spending few minutes taking videos and photos. And then I noticed moisture on the front and back camera lens.Everything else was fine. When I got home,I even charged my phone and played games. Then after 7hours, at night,I charged my device and then I couldn't turn on my phone. The local service centre said I need to replace a new motherboard costing more than $350.
Does anyone knows how to order cheap motherboards,it would be great if I can only use for normal stuffs
But how much is a motherboard?
I feel so lucky, when I just put my cellphone in salt water a friend screamed at me angrily telling me to not do it. I don't live in the first world, so losing a phone like this would mean I wouldn't get another one. Still my heart pounded because I was afraid that in the next hours it would corrode.
Here I thought s9 galasy is better lol!
My xperia xz1 broke yesterday! cant recharge for more than a minute cuz it gets hot! and it shuts down and very hard to open.
My xperia z back in 2012 had water under the camera lens and lots of dust, but still works . ;)
Do it works?
I'm watching this after i lost my phone after dropping into salty chlorine water
that happends with all Samsung models? I'm scared because I have the S8+
Junior Gamer - Android Yes, all Samsung phones abide by the laws of physics.
The Samsung Galaxy S7, S8 and S9 are IP68 water and dust resistant. What that means is that it is completely protected against dust and can stay in 1.5 meters of water for a maximum of 1 hour (the numbers may vary depending on the model of the phone, some can reach 3 meters for 1 hour). Note that Waterproof and Water resistant are 2 different things. If you are worried about your phone because you have submerged it in fresh water, you don't have to worry. If, however, you have submerged it in salt water, all I can recommend is to rinse it up with fresh water and let it dry. I hope this helps. Sorry about any mistake, English is not my first language
I have Xperia XZ1, im scared too
@@spacelobster6205 Actually, S5 has IP67
@@morenootomotif7460 I never said anything about the S5 tho
What happens when you don't flush your boat engine after a day in salt water ???
You aren't going to clean them before putting in the bag? What is the matter with you?
If you plan on using your phone in salt water, maybe get some isopropyl alcohol and submerge the phone in it after taking it out of the water. Not sure if that can stop corrosion completely, but it's worth a try
Why google camera app for s9 plus exynos with portrait mode???? Is not available yet ???
Not yet but will do a video soon.
These things are not submariner watches , you take them under water at your own risk .
salt water i suspect may have a different surface tension too ,
also ,
IP68 rating = 1.5 metres or 4ft 11 " for 30 minutes , if you went 10 feet under that is double the rated limit .
A better option i think might be to put the phone in snap lock sandwhich bag if you must take the device in the drink .
Often you see people do water tests on the tube , and they pull the device out of the liquid and wallah it still works ,
but often damage takes time to have an effect , and water does not immediately travel to sensitive parts , it may trickle around inside the phone for a while before it finds the sweet spot .
What about pool use ?
RIP S9
Whats the song called?
UPON TAKING A CLOSER LOOK.... LMAOOOOO!
Oh sorry to hear this but it might be a good idea to get a proper cover eg a catalyst or a ghostek nautical cover for your next s9 or s9 plus this is worth it as I have tried and tested this on iPhones that I have owned . Small investment for a 1000 usd phone
0:34-0:39 Intro song?
I submerged my s8 in sea water, several times, without any protection and until now it works perfect. It's strange what happened to you.
LG branded battery in a google pixel 2. Am I missing something here or do they actually come like that.
boo poo So google designs the phone but other companies build them?
CartoonMaster lg also made the oled screen for pixel
It is not recommended at all to use a phone underwater at the sea, I don't know if Google or Samsung clearly tell that about their phones, but Sony does it for example.
I was just in Mexico last week with my S8+ and i lost fast charging. My phone got wet but wasn't submerged in the ocean. Luckily I was able to do a warranty swap.
You are probably right about going 10' under water. The pressure alone was a contributing factor in the failure.
I put.my s9 on sea water and after 2 days moisture detection comes and go
What about just using a lifeproof case.
I have the Samsung Galaxy S8 and I read on the web that I can use my phone in salt water and in any type of water but for 30 minutes in 1.5 meters....I am confused😂
hey buddy , by mistake I swam in the sea with my galaxy S9 PLUS around 1 feet only for around 30min and now is not working , should i try to dry it for 2 days or just go change the motherboard directly? plz need your advice.
thanks in advance.
Dry it yes for a week first.
Ur phone is working now?
For a moment I thought those jerryrigeverything
Zach is awesome!
Saw a video of you on lg g6. Was it destroyed?
Nope g6 is the only phone that survived this test. That is why my snorkeling video was using g6 but I wish lg sent me g7 as it would be better than g6 maybe.
If you can find them you can get port plugs to protect from the corrosion.
Yeah Ringke actually has flaps for USB ports.
Gopro also not fully secure. I have had two water damaged gopros. now I always use a case for my gropros.
For sure, I would use an enclosure anyways.
I dropped my LG G4 into sea... It was like two middle fingers deep...took the battery and sd card from the phonr...went home while it was still wet (using shirts din't help)...took me 10 tk get home...putted it in rice. After 1 day, phone was't charging nor booting up,but i had LG G4 stylus and swiched batteries with those two phones and it worked like normal
