  • I designed the Chum Slumber for the chum salmon on the west coast and for the pink salmon that are found in the Great Lakes. In particular, the humpies that swim through the St. Mary's River in Sault Ste. Marie.

Awesome design buddy! I like the use of the chenille as a spreader for the collar. I like tying my soft hackles with a thorax for the same reason. I'd give it a 5 Stein 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 On the red butt C-mid, was that your birth date coin? Cheers m8 👍 😁

+Joe Duca The shoulder under the collar (I'm not sure exactly what to call it) is something I picked up tying big intruder flies, but rather than using chenille, we used polar bear spun in a collar and then placed marabou, rhea, etc over top. Made for really big profiled flies with just a few materials. 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
You are sharp Joe, yes, that coin was from my birth year. We have hundreds of different quarters now, but back in the day, it was just 1973 quarter that had a different reverse stamp than the usual caribou.

Piscator Flies LoL, I guess I am a bit of a Sherlock 👀🔎 Holmes, elimentary my dear Darren! 😎 Yeah I guess you could call it a shoulder (to lay on so to speak), it's used in a lot flies, Intruders, Chocklett's stuff(has a body tubing just for that), Craven does it with a cone head well back from the collar, they do it wih bead heads on nymphs too, Popvics flies, etc. I first heard the term "spreader" in Stone River Outfitters catalogue (they have a channel here) referring to tubing used to spread bucktail for the reasons you stated, illusion of bulk with few materials. Btw Stone River used to be Hunters, best materials I've seen for Classic streamer, all things from the north east traditional tying. Well no matter the terms, you tied an awesome looking fly! Cheers 🔍😎🍺

+Joe Duca Yes, you're right, I guess there are a lot of ways to skin that cat. Also, the brass and aluminum discs work well for that purpose. I'm sure I've seen the Stone River Outfitters post here, but I'm going to have another look-see. 😎🍺

Piscator Flies That poouurr 🐈 cat, glad they have 9 lives. That's why I love this stuff, so many variations on a theme. To me Intruders look like a chain of thoaxed soft hackles only on a larger scale. A long time ago I read about putting a sequen on your tippet in front of your fly to give it erratic action. Now there's discs of many configurations you incorporate in the fly. The MP reversible cones like fish masks give action or streamline the fly. Mr. Twister grub bodies came out ages ago. A little later I think Lefty Kreh came out with tails to add on a fly. Now they're world wide, the result of marketing similar products. Please, stop me! 🙊lol. At any rate, making a dubbing ball with polar bear sounds pretty tasty to me. (love the new intro, whistling wind through the mountains, lol, gets me every time) Cheers to fly tying! 👍😎🍺

Joe Duca thanks Joe. Yes, all kinds of things you can add to a fly to blue the lines between lure and fly. I've had that discussion countless times. Lol 🥊. GlAd that you like the new intro. I'm working on some other things, so no new vids for a couple days.
