  • In this video I will show you how I solder metal of differing weights and gauges together. This is an important soldering technique to know as most soldering operations involve soldering a small part to a larger part. How do you solder, for example, a tiny setting to a pendant without melting the setting. I also included tips on soldering wire, solder itself, and soldering stone settings, etc.
    Thanks for watching!

Great video and a lovely design you've made there. The 'aha' moment for me was where you use the cross-locks to draw heat away from the wire to make it less vulnerable to melting. Great tip.

Great tutorial! I'm in that frustrating phase of learning to solder where I wonder why it looks so much easier when someone else does it. I appreciate how well you explain everything. You are so generous with your time in posting all these amazing videos and your website is one of my most visited. By the way, you look so gorgeous in this video!

Scary moment for me there. It did look as though the flame was on the setting. Glad you pointed out that it wasn't.
Thanks Nancy. I'm wondering what the completed piece is going to look like.

Hi Nancy, I love this piece and your videos are so informative (and entertaining too). How do you achieve that lovely frosty satin finish please, or is it just from the pickling? Thank you for wealth of info you share with us!

Thanks, Nancy. I have a hard time with braising. I don't know when the pieces are soldered. I know I'm supposed to look for a silver line, but I never see it. I'm new at this, in case it wasn't glaringly obvious.

That really is the best way to be sure while soldering. The color of the metal could be an indicator but, you'd need a very trained eye. Are your pieces holding together? Are you sweat soldering? You should be able to see a small silvery line around the two pieces. Have you tried using magnification, while you solder? I have to do that so that I can see the solder flow. You need to get your face close - without burning off your eyebrows and hair! (This is one of the reasons to tie back long hair!). Let me know. We can carry this conversation on in Facebook, if you'd like. Just PM me. My FB links are in the video description area.

Thank you Nancy, you always have great tips. May I ask what kind of flux and pickle you use? There are so many choices.

Are you focusing the flame on the back metal so that the solder does not run up the wire which would heat up faster than the larger piece?

Thanks Nancy. What #sand paper do you have on your block? I so need to make one of those.

Nancy I would NEVER have thought to use a torch that large so close to that wire.... and yet STILL I deal with 'slumping' of the smaller pieces- so WTH am I doing wrong?

On the floor, crawling under the bench searching for that tiny, painstakingly crafted piece of silver...... It is the Jeweler's Curse that jewelry metals are not metallic.
