they make a version of this with just one big flat grill mark rectangle, so you can make bigger sandwiches. I'd go for that one. Just picked one up for $17
Hi! Looks like you need a panini press, not a sandwich maker. This type of appliance is not good for thick sandwiches: when you use force to close the sandwich maker, this WILL lead to a damage. Get a panini press with a floating hinge that allows you to close the press at varying heights. Thanks for the review!
Make sure it preheats properly, a light should come on when it’s hot enough, likewise ensure you don’t have food tucking out the sandwich edges as that would create moisture
So you used thick slices of bread and was surprised by the fact that it was hard to close. Yes the short cord is for safety. They realize that people aren’t the sharpest knives in the drawer.
I have a different version of this. Works so damn well. Perfect cooking every time.

Oh that's cool, I did not know that, thank you for sharing this!
Just bought one myself... for the price, you can't beat it. Wish it would brown a little more.
I was reading other reviews they say just leave the sandwich on the plates longer.

My grilled cheese sandwich turns out soggy never dry and well toasted. Is there a reason for this?

It's hard to close because your bread is too thick.
