  • Drawing Projects UK presented this online Drawing Discussion - with Lucy Anderson & Nancy Haslam-Chance - alongside the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2020 exhibition on Thursday 14 January at 6pm.
Selected artists, Lucy Anderson & Nancy Haslam-Chance, discussed their drawings selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2020 exhibition and approaches to drawing and documenting the experiences of people in domestic and caring contexts with Anita Taylor followed by a Q&A with the audience.
Lucy Anderson's drawing, Abueli - Conversations with Grandson, 2020, charcoal and pastel on paper, 89 x 68cm, is a precious snapshot of a moment in time, a sensitive depiction of the elderly sitter. A conversation between two separate generations during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain. A lady who is not only 96, but also lived through the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War, the turbulent Spanish post-war period and most recently COVID-19. Depicting Abueli in her most natural setting, breaking bread over the breakfast table with her grandson whilst folding her stockings, its aim is to evoke a sense of intimacy, calmness and ease between the two sitters.
Nancy Haslam-Chance's three drawings, Tea, Teeth, and Pendant Alarm, all made in 2020 and pencil on paper, 34 x 28cm, are part of a series of drawings, Caring Drawings, focuses on my job as a carer/support worker and the relationships I have formed with clients. I am interested in the practicalities of these relationships; my clients require support and it is my job to support them. Yet within these practicalities there are moments of intimacy, tenderness and companionship. These are the moments I try to capture in my drawings, which I do from memory whilst travelling between shifts or when I get home from work in the evenings. Being a carer is very rewarding, but it can also be hard and lonely.
