Unlike the North American and European markets, minivans are still very popular in a number of Asian countries, including Japan. The iconic model in this segment is the large Toyota Alphard minivan, the fourth generation of which recently debuted in its home country, replacing its predecessor, which had been in production since 2015.
The body shapes have become more embossed, while the Vellfire has a different bumper design and a massive radiator grille pattern with horizontal slats. Another unusual design touch on both cars is the break in the window line.
Like the second-generation Lexus LM introduced this spring, the new Alphard and Vellfire are built on the TNGA-K platform, which also underpins the Camry, Highlander and other Toyota models. The dimensions of the minivans have not changed much: the length reaches almost 5 m (4.99 m, which is 5 cm more than its predecessor), and the wheelbase (3 m), width (1.85 m) and height (1.93 m) remained the same.
The developers increased the rigidity of the new minivan's body by 50%, and in the Vellfire it is reinforced thanks to an additional strut at the front. The front suspension is with McPherson struts, the rear suspension is with double wishbones, and for the Vellfire, in addition, a sports chassis setup is provided. The shock absorbers are amplitude-dependent.
Toyota also announced a decrease in vibration levels (by 30%) and aerodynamic noise. The initial versions have 17-inch wheels, while more expensive Alphard versions are equipped with 18- or 19-inch wheels (standard for the Vellfire). The declared ground clearance is 15 cm.
