Marina Bozzio - The step daughter of an iconic drummer, Terry Bozzio. Her kit honors his use of three kick drums!

I was just about to point this out. Though, Terry's kit often has 5-7 bass drums. And yes, he uses them all.

most seem to always miss this key in her drum kit, also each of the three are different size / tones. she is such an awesome drummer. I hope she can get her health situation under control. I've been dying for them to find a permanent singer and get back to pumping out awesome music. Aldious is so good. very nice range of styles too.

Hi Wave! It's absolutely heartbreaking that Marina Bozzio quit the band due to colitis. You asked about Marina's drums. They are Acoustic! They are custom designed for her by DW. Her Dad, Terry, is an executive for DW. I'm sure you've heard of him, Terry Bozzio, Frank Zappa's former drummer. If you're impressed by Marina's drums, you've got to see her Dad's. They take up his entire office! I don't need 3 bass drums. I'm happy with the two I already have! But, I'd kill for her small toms! I'm all into the ergonomics! A long time ago, there was a British Jazz drummer named Barrett Deems. On one of his kits, he had 12 X 6 and 14 X 6 toms. Have a great one! Russ

RE: the 3 kick drums. Couldn't find reason, but the drummer (Marina Bozzio) is the step daughter of "Terry John Bozzio (born December 27, 1950), an American drummer best known for his work with Missing Persons and Frank Zappa. (from Wikipedia). Click on the following link, a picture of his drum kit. This might have something to do with it....lol chicagoreader.com/music/fusion-innovator-terry-bozzio-swings-through-town-with-his-enormous-drum-kit/

Glad you did Aldious. I'd say Destrose (Miho and Haruna founder of Lovebites in Destrose) was the precursor to Lovebites but Aldious started about the same time.
This is a good song but unfortunately people on RUclips get stuck on the same songs from bands. Three kick drums? She's got three legs dude, lol.

  • @MaartenT
    @MaartenT 4 месяца назад +8

I would say Lovebites is probably more inspired by what Destrose did since both Miho and Haruna were in that band, but Aldious are contemporaries to Destrose (both started around the same time 2007/2008), so both have without a doubt influenced a LOT of Japanese female metal bands. Edit: You might be able to put Mary's Blood in that list as well (formed in 2009), but Mary's Blood already formed out of ex-Destrose members, so that's maybe not totally correct in that sense.

Aldious has been around since 2008. They weren't the first female band, but they were the first female band to achieve commercial success, female bands couldn't get record contracts because they didn't think female bands would sell.
Aldious proved them wrong and busted the door open for all the female bands that followed.

not a joke. yes, three different bass drums. three different sizes, three different tones. and she uses them quite well. love the sound of her kit. she's such an under-rated drummer. I love her sound. I hope she gets through her medical issues and returns to playing again some day.

  • @allanmoger1838

Aldious are indeed OGs. One of their best features is excellent songwriting, not always, but often enough to win. Yoshi has chosen musicians wisely over the years and each iteration of Aldious has worked for me. I wish she’d get motivated to organize other lineup and give us all a beat down with another brilliant album right in the thick of the western awakening to this genre, a genre they really kicked off in 2010.
Also, Marina has three bass drums because she’s Marina fucking Bozzio and don’t you forget it! lol She would never say such a thing, but if you notice, she is some serious class in a pack of decent drummers with fast feet and not that much else. I challenge you to find a live video of “Travelers”, which Marina co-wrote, to really see what I mean. Marina and Toki were both on fire that day.

Amazing this band has persevered through so much bad luck. Yoshi must have an iron will to keep it all together and keep rebuilding--on top of being a wonderful guitarist and songwriter. Yes, they played a role in inspiring many of the other twin-lead bands. Love this band. Yes, they are quite eclectic--they have done poppy ballads and some straight-up rockers too.

Three kicks tuned for different songs the influence of Terry Bozzio. This would be a small kit by his standards, one of his kits has like eight kicks and another two octaves of tuned toms. There is also a video on RUclips of him playing a kit of all gongs and cymbals.

Hey Wave, I looked around a bit to see if Lovebites was inspired by Aldius. In looking, I came across this comment from an Aldious interview: "In "Across," MIYAKO (currently LOVEBITES) participated in the piano accompaniment" from (ilovejapanesemusic.com/aldious) On the LOVEBITES wikipedia page they talk about influences, but Aldious is not mentioned. I believe that Yoshi and Miyako are friends. I thought I saw a comment but lost it. They have a picture together on Facebook.

Aldious has played in the US once as far as I know, at the big NAMM trade show in Anaheim in 2019, in a hotel lobby of all things. Midori and Miyako of Lovebites were also at NAMM, they each did a solo performance/demo at the booths of their respective amp makers. And Marina Bozzio's brother is a drum tech.

You like pinch harmonic you have to do Aldious Go Away music video.
Like bass guitar do Aldious Suicide live, has bass Intro and a bass breakdown.
And the three kick drives, you can see thr pedal set up in their video Showdown. There is a less than one second shot of it. There are 3 pedals one for each kick drum, note they have 3 different diameters.
And the Toms are shallow depth, for fatter attack but you lose some sustain.

Straight metal.rock dominated early years but long eclectic! Although "We Are" is typical - similar would be e.g. "Dominator", but also do songs ranging from pure upbeat j-pop e.g. "Without You" to seimi-acoustic ballads so sad want to die e.g. "I Don't Like Me". Occasional bluesy or funky elements.

    3 kicks... yeah... she's Terry Bozzio's step-daughter.
He kind of had a tendency of going totally overkill in the number of drums.
Not sure if the inspiration they had on Lovebites was that big.
Both Haruna and Miho were big fans of Helloween and NWOBHM, so when they started LB, I'm sure that's the direction they intentionally went for. Until they cranked the speed up to 11 and Miho left.

If Marina didn't inherit his skills, she certainly learned them from a very early age. Her performances will be sorely missed. She's not dead, just very ill. Share your memories with others! Thanks!
