The film's premise is that many of the major figures of the Civil War- especially the ones who became "boy generals", were all in the West Point Class of 1854 and that several of them served in "bleeding Kansas" and at Harper's Ferry. Some of what the film depicts is true. Some of it is not. John Brown did raid in Kansas in 1855-56 and then made the raid on Harper's Ferry on 10/16/59.

It's a good cast and a good story. But it's 2021... I'm no *woke*ster but it's hard to accept that the abolitionists in this story, those who sought to end human bondage, are supposed to be the bad guys. I guess it gives us some idea how popular ideas have changed since the film was made in 1940.
I guess they were hoping to shape history but it's a little odd to be sure.
I have not yet watched the movie, but, if that abolitionist was John Brown, well, he was very dangerous and violent.. He was absolutely a fanatic, and brutally murdered people in the name of justice. ANTIFA's gun club is named after him. He was like the anti-abortionists that attack Doctors and blow up clinics, same same - only different.
I can't stand Hollywood movies if I find out a movie I am watching is from Hollywood then I will not watch it...
