The double-A side to this single is “Bicycle Race”. Lead singer, Freddie, shouts “Get on your bikes and ride! A lyric from “Bicycle Race” states “Fat bottomed girls, they'll be riding today so look out for those beauties, oh yeah”. Brian, lead guitarist, was inspired to write this because Freddie preferred larger bums. I, myself and a young lady at the time, had a jiggly bum and embraced this song with glee! “Ride ‘em, Cowboy!”

Freddie preferred dude's butts - so there must be a joke in the song somewhere for Freddie.

Don’t forget on the album picture outside of the USA the crowd of girls waiting to take off on their bikes were seen from the back, naked, just in case you weren’t paying attention. Queen always has put on a great show.

My opinion is, many young girls wound up with anorexia nervousa due to the constant pressure to be thin. All the models and actresses were thin, and it had an effect on young girls.

Something to consider about this song is that "fat-bottomed girls" weren't really the rage back in the 1970s. During the 2000s we've come to appreciate curves and people of all shapes and sizes but back then the very thin were the epitome of desirable (at least according to popular opinion). Queen singing about women with "a little extra" was pretty bold. I was a kid when this came out but sang along anyway. Another great choice, Rere. Cheers from Florida.

I am from this era. The only time i got front row seats to a show and it was Queen’s first American tour with Mott The Hoople in NYC mid 1970s. As for girls, their bottoms and body positivity. I know all kinds of guys and each one had his own take on what he thought was attractive in a woman. I know one guy who ONLY wants fat bottomed girls. So I figured, there’s a match for everyone. Life Is Good.

Rere I’ve just discovered your channel and very much enjoy your reactions. I’m 58 so was a kid and teenager during Queen’s heyday. Lead singer here and most always was the great Freddie Mercury. Freddie is considered by many including myself as the greatest front man in Rock history. No one commanded a stage or a crowd like Freddie. So many great Queen songs if you’ve not done We will rock you that’s a staple and classic. Another star who dominated the 70s was Elton John try Goodby Yellow Brick Road or his masterpiece Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeeding if you do this one I recommend the live version from Madison Square Garden. Keep it up you’re doing great and really enjoy your channel.

Freddie Mercury is the lead singer. Brian May on lead guitar, Roger Taylor on drums, and John Deacon on bass. You should read a little bit about Queen. Their story is amazing. One of my favorite songs is Love of my Life, live at Wembly. It shows how Freddie involves the fans in the shows. He loved the fans as much as they loved him. Queen's live performances are epic.

There was a poster with a hundred naked fat bottom girls lined up at the start of a bicycle race inside the “All That Jazz” LP by Queen. Keywords: queen bicycle race. Also, “Rubenesque” is a term describing women in paintings from Peter Paul Rubens 1577 - 1640. They were not skinny women. Fashions come and go but the beauty of women never goes out of style.

Commonly, this was played with it's lead-in track: "Bicycle Race"/"Fat-Bottomed Girls", as the 2 segue into one-another on the album
[Just as: "We Will Rock You"/"We Are The Champions; was, always, known and played in tandem, in that fashion (becasue it, also, segued from one directly into the other, on the albnum; and the radio D.J.s usually played things in that fashion -as "album cuts" OR as if you were listening to the album with them. ...as 2 friends in a room, together)]
and is, STILL, expected to be presented that way.E

Never was a big fan of Queen but appreciated what they brought to the Rock & Roll table . The Queen Line-up , the Late Freddie Mercury on Lead Vocals & Piano , Roger Taylor on Drums & Vocals , Brian May on Guitars & Vocals , John Deacon on Bass & vocals . A fun side note on the band . Each member wrote a #1 hit single for the band . 😮

Body positivity comes from within but hearing a song that you can relate to really helps. Please keep making these reactions and enjoying yourself as much as you can.

Freddie Mercury (real name Farrokh Bulsara) was the lead singer of Queen and a real showman which is why they were always best live. Freddie sadly died of Pneumonia/AIDS in 1991 aged just 45 years old. As for the song here, it is goes in tandem with Bicycle Race and they were on the same single and album. The other single is referenced in the other song ("Get on your bike and ride." on this song and "Fat bottomed girls, they'll be riding today").

As for Queen and Fat Bottomed Girls, yep deffo a vibe. And probably only Queen would have dared to do it at the time and make it a success.
The models of the sixties (i.e. Twiggy) and later did tend to emphasise a slimmer body image, which TBH I think affected women more than men. Men would still prefer round women (I mean, hello, boob jobs), but because magazines & ads aimed at women used skinny models, women were being presented with a different ideal of the female body beautiful than men generally were. I'm not sure how much that has actually changed. I think we are perhaps more aware of the pressure of such advertising and maybe that helps at least to mitigate it, but it's been a while since I even thought about it.

Too many people now create a persona to be accepted and liked rather than just being themselves. Ironically, most would be liked much more as their natural self.

Saying, 'fat bottomed girls', does make it sound quintessentially English and polite, compared to more modern references to women's posteriors! I suppose it was the cleanest way of putting it in order to not upset the censors at the time. Although, I'm old enough to remember this being played at a church disco I attended as a child, back in the day, and one particular Grandmother took exception and called it out as being, 'vulgar.' Even as a kid at the time, I thought that was a total over-reaction to something that was largely innocuous. The song itself is from their, 'Jazz', album in 1978. This and the one before it I had a bit of a soft spot for, as they were the first 2 albums I got to hear in their entirety, back in the day, and I loved every track on them. 'Bicycle Race', being the double A-side single to this song that were seemingly always played together on the radio. Or, at least, they used to be.
