Arbortech power carving kit review (honestly)

- Arbortech has not so recently released a kit containing most of the important parts to get started on the power carving world. The most important aspect of this kit could be considered the chip/dust extraction. Lets get an honest unsponsored opinion of this system.

Good to see it in use. I use a turbo plane on a Makita angle grinder currently. Works a treat. Im looking at a curtain set up for the mess as I dont mind a small clean up but the big one is a pain.
Also - I will not use gloves near anything rotating , even my lathe. Hot/sharp wood hurts less than mangled hands I assume.
Yes I have struggled with the use of gloves but I have to say it beats trying to pick out all the slivers afterwards, especially when using cedar which I also get a rash from.
Dan, I had an idea for when I start power carving again.
I haven't done this yet, so I'm not sure how it's going to go. My idea was to use my drill press and a couple different sizes of forstner bits to hollow out a lot of the inside of the bowl, cutting down on the carving time and making a smaller mess.
Well I always say there is no ONE way to achieve a goal, there can be MANY ways. My personal thought on the forstner bit would be that I don't see it being much faster as the Turbo plane is pretty darn fast at hacking out wood. you will still create a pile of chips and shavings, they will just be around your drill press and not flung all over. When I carve I wear full PPE which takes some time to get dressed up in so I may as well carve away the entire projected while I wear my gear. Good review. I carve outside or at least the Same the wind is blowing out of my shop. What gets covered is either my patio or my approach. When it's hot or snowing out I go into the wood shed out back. Lol. Good show.
yeah most of my carving is still outside, however I recently acquired an enclosed cabinet that I am enjoying. I should do a video on that one !
As I’ve started to get my shop cleaned up a mess like that bothers me much more than it used too. I know there are health issues that can be made worse also. Thanks for the honest opinion!
Your very welcome! Even if I did not film any of my antics my shop would always be clean. I build in time every day to cleanup after a day of work in the shop.
The turbo plane's blades create a lot of wind. The planing attachment probably worked as a airflow guide for the air sucked in by the turboplane itself. You might not need the tiny fan in the back. I use mine outside, don't have the dust collected/planing guide things. I do need to get thicker gloves, shards from cracked spalted tan oak can be shrapnel. And for power unit I prefer the 6.0 amp B&D over my 7.0 amp DeWalt, because the B&D has an extra handle screw-in hole. Works better safer. Especially when using the Ball Gouge, which is squirrelly like a squirrel 😃
But those are fantastic tools. I make bowls, ladels, spoons, soap dishes(do this for love, not enough $ for the effort). There is a wild lot of derelict wood on California central coast and I'm a wood cutter too. No shop, just work in the yard, when dry😅
Your shop is immaculate. I use blower. Neighbors always know when I am closing up.
Thanks for the tips, I am so envious of your environment that you get so much good wood just laying around .... awesome. all I have is crappy poplar and ash in our area.
@@TherapyWoodWorks it's the wild fires which swept through here 3 years back, left 125 square mile patch of burnt dead or dieing trees. Except for city folks hardly anyone buys firewood anymore around here:)

You could make a chamber around your project open in one end and work inside it. Just like a sand blasting or spray paint chamber. There is no sense in scattering the chips all over your shop. Just limit the area it can spread.
funny you mention this, shortly after your video I bought such a cabinet with built in gloves, lighting and dust extraction ports. The lady used it for soap stone carving, It works awesome !
Hi Dan … been thinking about combining epoxy with bowl finishing … can you tell me the names of the stuff you mix together in order to create the gel you apply? Available locally in Ontario or must I go to Amazon? Get stuff and thanks for the great information ….
I use a 2 part epoxy. It is usually readily available at hardware or hobby stores, no need to order from amazon unless you are in a very small town without previously mentioned types of store. Seek and you will find... go ask for it and I bet someone local will point you in the right direction.
It's not dust, shavings , and shrapnel, it's carport carpeting.
