Tubes with Tanus inserts
I plan to convert my tubed hardtail emtb commuter to tubeless next tire replacement. I am excited to do it. I didn’t know about tubeless bicycle tires until a year ago, I knew for vehicles and trailers, and I want them. I am tired of the anxiety behind having Tubed Tires. So now I am going to convert it to full tubeless emtb.
Thankfully your other Channels, including this one, have taught me a lot involving new technologies involving bicycles and the existence of e-bikes.
Thank you again.
I run tubes but I put sealant in the tubes. But even if you run tubeless you still should probably still carry a spare tube
@@thevapingpolisher9717I’m thinking about going down this route
Tubeless since a year, it has been great so far 😊
I realize there was a bit of joking going on in the video but carrying a tube for backup with tubeless setups is a very good idea. Had a flat one time that sealant wouldn't fix because a nail went through the tire and rim tape including the first wall of a double wall rim. I put the tube in and rode home no issues. Then put a vulcanized patch on the tire retaped the rim back to tubeless. Tubeless works great on most punctures but not all.
I understand this is a (not so) hidden comercial for Peaty's products (probably in return for his participation in the dirt shed show a few weeks ago) but still Steve Peat is awesome in these videos, so natural and fun to watch. We need more of these.
Great video as always especially the good humour, PLEASE make a video of going tubeless as its something I want to do and don’t have much mechanical knowledge so it would be very helpful to see someone who has never done it before complete the task as I will have the same problems as you.
Hey Roger! We're glad you enjoyed the video! Check out this GMBN Tech video! This should help you out! ruclips.net/video/0CfCuQV1yWA/видео.html Cheers for the support!
All Tubeless, all the time. I absolutely carry a tube & boot though because of the local terrain. Need a back up for the occasional sidewall gash! Our soil in Northwest Arkansas is extremely rocky.
I went a different route and put schwalbe marathon plus tyres on my ebike. They've been on over a year and i ride all over dartmoor with loads thorns etc etc but still no punctures.
I use slime inner tubes. I don't ride that often so I need a solution that is low maintainence. Usually I just need to top the pressures up before a ride. At worst with tubes and slime you need to remove the thorn and maybe move the tyre round away from the hole. Usually don't know there is a problem unless the tyre won't stay up between uses.
Does it dry up with time?
Flat out is a military grade sealant which can be added to tubes. This method is preferable since it keeps the gunk build up off the rim and tire bead.
I use flat out in my tubes, works well.
Ran over a broken bottle with tubeless sealent did NOT seal hole too big to plug always carry a innertube even with tubeless....
Isn't that just general knowledge
changed my focus ebike to tubeless, shop did it when it had it's 6 months service. 1st time tubeless for me 👍
Tubeless may work in the UK but when you live in a hot climate you have to repeatedly rotate the wheels when not riding for a period of time which is not practical. I use tubes and sealant which I find is an excellent option
Steve Peat, my era! Legend!!!
Back on subject, can't believe tubeless tyres are a thing for Mtb's now… 😅
Was a bit concerned with the drill for the rim and tape, and if you're using the plugs put them in at a shallow angle away from any potential contact with the tape- don't want to puncture a spoke hole in the sealed rim by accident (that's especially relevant as you come down to tiny x-section road tyres! You should see the hate over on GCN for tubeless (and discs lol).... )
True! Excellent point well made Jack
Overall tubeless is the best system. It's a bit of a faff if you use the bike infrequently as it can drop pressure faster during storage, and you have to remember to top up the sealant every few months... but as Steve demonstrated it is far more hassle to fix a puncture in a tube on a cold muddy hillside, when if running tubeless you wouldn't have even noticed that it occurred. I will save tubes for use on my commuter bike... but tubeless is the way to go for mountain biking.
You need to put a clock on the tubeless up-keep per year vs tube; I.E removing old clumpy solution, cleaning tire, replacing tire, and adding solution. Also cost analysis.
I run tubeless, which works fine most of the time. But I live in Hampshire by the South Downs Way. If you if hit a big flint you’re properly buggered! Then you need International Rescue!!
Tubless. I ran over a bunch of thorns one day and the sealant was squirting out of multiple holes...but it sealed up after a bit and i was able to get home.
Yesterday was my first ride after transitioning to tubeless...well, tyre is probably ruined, rim luckily survived. A bit of my fault, 28psi on 29x2.6, riding in a bit rocky trail. Didn't know one can have a snake bite on tubeless but there we go. Both holes are smaller than what guys did in the video however one of them holes is very close to the clincher. I'll try to patch it up today as sealant couldn't do it😢😢.
Ive had sharp rock slash my tubeless tire a few times (rear) had to put a tube anyway.
I prefer tubeless rear and tubed front. I like changing front tire depending on conditions. Tubeless is great except when you flat!! If the tire walls stick into each other, sealant squirts or the valves clog is such a pain.
Obviously tubeless in the rear is a must. Not up front where I very rarely flat. I prefer the feeling of the front tire with a tube, firmer, always been like freaked out of air burping out my front tire which has happened a few times and one sent me to the ground.
Tubes with sealant FTW
I've ran over a broken bottle, it ripped both tyres so had to push the bike home, it was first ride on brand new bike, 🤘🤔
Sealant is fine until there is a 4-5mm slit from glass or a hole in the side wall, where there is a likely hood of defamation that opens up a slit. I've had a few of these over the years and the sealant just sprayed out. That's why I still carry a tube and a peice of fabric to stop the tube blowing out. I also carry a pump as I occasionally forget to replace the used CO2 cartridge.
What wasn’t mentioned about tubeless is that presta valves get clogged with sealant and won’t allow air inflow after a few months ,requiring replacement.
And you still need to carry a tube and pump if you go tubeless because if you ding your rim, and the bead won’t seal , tubeless is useless.
Less, can be not enough.
You don't necessarily have to replace clogged valves! You can remove the valve core and clean it with a pick, then push a 2mm allen key down the body of the valve to clean it out. You'll definitely have enough for air flow!
@@Zangief74thats right gotta use good sealants. Still gotta keep maintenance
Tubeless is messy, and there are some punctures tubeless won't seal. Always bring a tube.
I found Slime tubes to be a good compromise but, like tubeless, you didn't know how many holes there were in you tyres untill you took them off. Rather like Swiss cheese...
That was so much fun to watch. 🤣😂
We're glad you enjoyed it, Robert! 🙌😂
I run tubless with inserts so now i dont bother carrying a spare tube because where would i put the insert if i was to put a tube in.
Also more peaty 🤘
I have Bontrager 2.6 tires on my bike, running on tubes. In terms of comfort, will there be an increase in comfort if I run tubeless instead? My bike is a hardtail so I'm looking for maxximum comfort, specially on the back wheel. Many thanks!
haha classic Steve it's going to blow up.....
😂I love this.
Tubeless rulez, in my area there is a plant with sharp torns (Tribulus terrestris) In late summer all torns spread on everywhere.
I'm still using tubes, and will do so until I get my new Ebike hopefully this spring. Trying to sell my old Ebike so I can buy a different one, the trouble is the one I have now has been discontinued, and was from a company that has absolutely no support for their products in the first place. Definitely will convert to tubeless on the new bike, seems like a much easier and quicker solution to tubes, no disassembly required, and you can use plugs for larger punctures if needed, plus running the sealant in the tires will help too.
Could you please name the company?
@@markogligoric8562 They're all the same, all made in China, take your pick. Most share the same frames, motors, batteries, etc.
The bike I have now is from Rattan. The bike I plan on getting later on is from Lectric. I made the mistake of buying a mountain bike...I don't have a way to transport it in my car...so I'll be buying one of the folding bikes from Lectric....probably the premium model as it has a 100+ mile range.
@@wildbill23c thank you!
@@markogligoric8562 Your welcome. Hope that was what you were asking about LOL. Rattan is my current bike, its a bit under powered with a 450 watt motor trying to go up hills...from my understanding the Lectric bikes have a 500+ watt motor which maxes out at 1000 watts intermittently.
i got the same vaude jacked!!!! its ultra!
Steve Pete seems to be the man.
He very much is!
Don't people use tubes with sealant in them? I know I do.
Steve was born today.
Brilliant
Thanks, Robert!
Great Friday morning entertainment. 😅
Glad you enjoyed it! It was great hanging out with Steve! Thank you for the support! 👍
well, that certainly does put things into prospective... unless you have an puncture with an Epic view where taking your time changing a tube is worth the view
The mesquite thorns where I ride are like caltrops. Add to that the various other thorns, cacti and stones and my tires take a beating...Tubeless is the way to go! ..While I have had to put in some plugs after some particularly giant and vicious mesquite thorns, I have solved most of my 29er flats of tubeless tires with proper sealant...Not so successful are the 27.5 tires I have on another bike with standard wheels and tubes. I run sealant in the tubes or I would get nowhere fast on these thorny trails. But once a thorn gets in the tire it may puncture the tube over and over again until the air is out. In the end I have messy sealant smeared tubes and tires that I have to patch occasionally the old fashioned way.
Thought this was an “acting” video. Tubeless setup is ranked up with the dropper post as one of the biggest game changers in mtb. Could not believe he never converted a couple years ago!
Bad acting only! Steve has been on tubes this whole time 🤦♂️
Omg the CO2 part was classic LOL
Steve Peat must have felt like slapping Steve behind the head for being so slow 🐌
It's almost like an infomercial! 🤣
I’ve Put sealant in my tubes 😂👋
Is it possible to go tubeless after using the tires with tubes or must they be new?
Doesn't matter
😂 funny stuff!
We had so much fun making this video! Glad you enjoyed, Rob!
First you don’t need a 29 tube for a 29 tire a 26 or a 27.5 will work just fine. Also it’s hard to change a tube when your under pressure, pun intended 😂
Sounds like the real win here is the CO2 canister over the pump for time savings, but you'd need the pump for reusability right?
Looooooool🥇👌👍
Yep, let's see that video, I'm old brigade, and need to change my ways ;-)"
Sorry Steve but I can get exactly the same result with my inner tubes filled with inner tube sealant. Ole Skool it maybe but with a 21st century twist. For added protection, add a tyre insert. Result!👍🏿
A CO2 cannister is a once only thing but a pump is with you for life.
Pity Steve’s not the new embn presenter. Can you imagine the laughs these two would have.
Went tubeless today 😅
I still carry a tube even tho I’ve gone tubeless.
That's always a good idea Lew, sometimes the tubeless sealant just won't be able to repair the holes!
Nice “plug” peaty
What if it’s a side wall slit?
Getting creative with some plugs can help out! But if it's a big slit you may be able to boot it and drop a tube in to get you home! Chances are that that tyres a write off though!
A mini foot pump would help 🤔
Tubeless all the way
Always!
No. Steve. Following you for ages. This cannot be true. Tubes!!!! Really!
All too true unfortunately! 😅
Friends don't let friends ride tubes...
Totally agree. However, there are exceptional circumstances! We finally talked a mate into tubeless after years of running tubes, then got his first flat ever - on the first tubeless ride. Big hole, too big for plugs and a tube was required.
@@MrUnl0rd LOL thats a bit of bad luck!
Doddy is crying right now...
Did he actually try and undo a quick release with an Allen key 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Tubeless is great for most casual riders - but when you shralp turns as hard as I do all the sealant just leaks out. Great on an XC bike to save weight and stop thorn punctures on lightweight xc tyres but it’s no good for Dh riding with heavy riders.
How slow was he!
this is a great video. but the camera man is drunk!!! put the camera on a stand, it'll be 10,000x better
I'll probably be called a total idiot here. But why don't they just make an inner tube with a removable core, so you can put the sealant in the inner tube and be done with it, without all the fear and faff.
Somebody is new 😂
Even though I run tubeless, I still carry a tube and a 'boot'! Given the problems some tubeless tyres can present, I understand why people don't bother. Personally I love running tubeless...
Terrible acting, btw! 🤦
Sorry about the acting 😉
Tubeless glue into the tube???
Who the hell is this rookie! Where is Chris 🤪😉
