- I'm drinking a single malt scotch whisky from the Port Charlotte line from the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay. This one's the OLC:01, a cask strength release that's spent some time in sherry casks. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

I've gotta stop watching whisky reviews in the morning otherwise I'm going to start day-drinking. 😬🤣
😂😂😂
At first I was not sure what to make of it, but after a while I clicked with it and it's my favourite PC so far! I find it far better then the PAC. The sherry casks must have been really superb old ones. They work with Bodega Fernando de Castilla for years ( think of the old blue BL Sherry Classic which had the small FdC logo on the bottle). Great review, your love for P.C. is truly justified.
Totally agree.
Nothing to add.
Thanks for continuing your great Style of Vids.
😎🤘
Hah thanks so much, buddy! Cheers! 🥃
Great video. I have not tried the OLC, PAC or SC but have a PC 7 & PC 8 the PC 8 being one of favorites of all time. A couple of weeks ago did a Octomore/PC tasting that was quite good. I was amazed how different the Octomores were from the PC's and how different the Octomores were from each other. Octo's are really expensive and hard to get in my market.
Thanks for reviewing, Geoff.
Have not have this one. Have had the CC, MR and MRC (for me in diminishing appreciation). Based on those them cask exploration series is well worth exploring... but I've found myself turning away from sherried whiskies more and more, so don't let me stop you from exploring further.
Slàinte mhath
Love it, made me laugh.
I’ve not tried a Port Charlotte yet, loved the Classic Laddie from Brush-laddish (nailed it, too).
Seems like you’re a fan :)
Love your videos!! Thanks for all you do! Would love to see you review some Octomore and maybe do a Octo vs PC battle.
Sounds like a fun video. It's a shame Octomores are so pricey! 😬
Cheers and thanks for the kind words! 🥃
Loving the humour and style of your reviews you are smashing it 👍 just ordered my first ever Bruichladdich classic and a port charlotte 10, will give the bottle of varnish a miss tho 😀
Hah thanks for the kind words. Probably good to pass up on the varnish. Doc says I should go easy on the stuff.
Good whisky , good review ))) Cheers !
Cheers Buddy! 🥃
😂 lmfao @ how you know what wood varnish tastes like. Also loved the death stare regarding the chilled comments regarding the mispronunciation of words.
🙋 Guilty as charged!
😂😂😂
Fabulous review Geoff! This is my favourite whisky! Damn it's beautifully complex and delicious! Of course favorites change but right now this is it! It's not easy to find in Vancouver. When I can find it I buy a couple to have on hand for my bar! I so enjoy the rich detail in your reviews and I learn a lot. I love that! Every brand should be non-chill filtered without colouring. I so enjoy the bottle design but I agree that I shouldn't have to go searching for info about whether the expression is chill filtered or coloured. That's lazy on the part of Bruichladdich. The complexity of peat and heat are outstanding! I love the earthy notes and the beautiful coastal spray! I am a peat head and I am thrilled with this expression! I am never disappointed! This expression stands up to Octomore which I adore! I am fine with the cost. It's about $120-$130 in Vancouver and it's worth it. This is my fave in the line. Terrific thoughts!
Always such encouraging comments, Christine. Thank you! Yeah this really is beautiful stuff, and easily one of my favourites at the moment. Glad to hear that you're loving it as much as I am. Cheers! 🥃
@@Gwhisky I sure am Geoff! So amazing and delicious! Fabulous videos and much appreciated!! It's easy to be encouraging! Awesome work! 🙂
I have tried the 10 but never these special bottlings, but based on your review, I think I am going to have to try them now!
Very worth it imo! 🥃
Love, love, loved this PC. Alas it seems out of stock in the UK. Wish I had taken smaller drams from that bottle ....
Yeah it's pretty much gone here in Taiwan, too. Shame. Luckily the SC:01 is still fantastic. it's not as good, but it's a beauty nonetheless and it's still widely available. 🥃
I wish you talked a bit more about how does it compare to the PAC. Like main differences and similarities. Nevertheless, great review, cheers!
Gwishky, there is a swedish whisky brand named “Agitator” they vacuum-destillate their whiskeys and age them on lower ABV, around 55%. They are absolutely amazing. Hope you can try it sometime.
I hope so, too! 🥃
I just found A PAC and an SC @$150. Which is the same price I paid for the SC and the OLC I already have. I left them for now. Much more realistic than Octomore, but 3 bottles of PC is like a single bottle of Laphroaig 25. I found a stash of PX Cairdeas for $85, which is great.
Sweet peat is like an itch that always needs scratching.
That's pricey, but not the worst bang-for-buck out there, as these are some of the finest whiskies out there at the moment. Cairdeas for $85 is a great deal! 🥃
Have not tried it, but I like my Port Charlotte 2013 Islay Barley whisky.
I haven't had the 2013 yet, but the line is excellent! 🥃
Geoff have you had the Port Charlotte R2-D2? Anyway, loved this review!
I tried it a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Bit metallic.
Just wanted to say great job on your concise reviews! On some other spirit review channels, it can take a bit long to get to the good stuff. Not yours, if I'm looking into trying something new, I find myself checking to see if you have reviewed it.
Very kind words, I'm flattered you like the channel. Cheers! 🥃
Well I lucked out and got the OLC:01 for $144 USD before tax. Almost double vs the Port Charlotte 10 year. It is still much cheaper vs the Octomore series. Octomore 13.1 in my area was $209 USD before tax. So for the OLC:01 what Octomores would you compare it to?
Was able to find this for $92 locally today. Jumped on it. It was either that or a Glen Scotia 15, but I have the latter. Glad you found this one a solid bottle.
Great price for this. Incredible stuff imo! 🥃
@@Gwhisky I got this thanks to your recommendation. I had gotten some money to spend there (my 50th bd). And everything was either Meh, or too expensive. Example : $100 for Tobermory 10. Then I saw this for $92. I think there was a 2013 too. I’m glad you liked this one. Recently I recall Whisky Jason trashed this one when comparing it to I think it was Mrc 01. Said that one was a great bottle but the OLC was “disharmonious” and not very good.
@@SaltyCuban Well we're all entitled to our opinions. I haven't had the MRC, but I've had all the others and they're all excellent imo, including this one. 🥃
@@Gwhisky hey, off the subject completely here but I need help. So I usually use the same glencairn glass, although I did just order another. Anyhow the issue is for a while now, I’m not getting any legs on any whisky I put in it. I’ve cleaned that glass with hot water only and towel dried. Tried using dish soap and hot water. Even tried magic eraser incase it was some kind of film inside. No mater what the whisky slides right off the sides like it was coated with rain x. Wtf?
Sorry buddy I have no idea. I've never had that happen before..
I have most of the experimental set but the OLC tops it all, the PAC is super, the SC-01 magnificent but the OLC is just unbelievable
They're all amazing whiskies though. What a great line...
@@Gwhisky Wow. Ok good enough for me.
Lucky that they had it. It’s not even my local big store. We were like and hours drive from my house and just happened to check it out. So you like these more than the Ledaig 18?
@SaltyCuban This is punchoer and less sophisticated, but it's more complex and malty. A mood thing but for me it's every bit as good. 👍
I have only the OLC:01 and the PAC:01. I prefer the OLC but in all honesty the PC10 is almost as good and at a much better price.
Hah I'm good with the extra cost, but I won't argue that the 10 is amazing stuff! 🥃
Agree 100% that The Cask Exploration Series is, in general, superior to the Octomore. Specially when putting the prices in the equation...
Better value and more complexity! Next Wednesday will he a blast for you, I'm sure! 🥃
Agree the PC exploration series are a step up from PC10 and are great value compared to Octomore but at double the price of PC10, one is paying for a higher level experience.
Cheers 🥃
Well said. It's a clear step up imo. Cheers buddy! 🥃
Absolutely second your thoughts on this one! It IS better than the Octomores. As much as I love Bruichladdich, Octomores is one of those strange hyped products that I just do not understand. I have blended Ballechin SFTC and Edradour caledonia for fun and people thought they were better than Octomores in blind tastings (they actually were better...). 200-300$ for just a fancier bottle is ridiculous.
The cask exploration series though...fantastic! . I got a second bottle of the PAC, OLC and MRC stowed away. All fantastic, I would put MRC01 marginally ahead of the other two, but that really depends on mood (MRC>OLC>PAC). For the price and the quality this stuff is quite extraordinary. MRC tends to pack a bigger punch and slightly more complexity. It has some delectable humidor, pork burnt ends notes that I die for. OLC comes literally toe to toe with sumptuous bacon and dark berry jams. PAC is the sweetest of them all. But is still better than its competitors out there for peated, cask finished whiskies.
92! Is that your highest mark so far?
I really need to get my hands on the MRC, but unfortunately it's sold out pretty much everywhere these days. I sampled it and loved it, but I want to reserve judgement until I can have it up against its peers.
Glad to hear you're with me on this series beating out most Octomores. Of course, they're a completely different style, but I prefer them regardless.
Can't get over how good this line is.
92 is pretty much as high as it goes, so yes! 🥃
@@Gwhisky The cask exploration series is indeed quite exception. The Octomore series, to put it bluntly is a gimmick. Higher peate levels do not equate to a higher flavors or even greater sensation of smoke or peat. Just like the Ardbeg Supernova series, with their ridiculous gimmick of maturation in space. Sounds cool, good story and excellent marketing. But I am not paying 200$s and more for these whiskies. The Bunnahabhain Moine wine finished line is another incredible series. If you can get your hands on those, definitely do try.
@soumyarudra I've had some from the Moine series. Exceptional, too. The Brandy Cask Finish is an all-time favourite! It was one of the less-hyped ones, but my goodness, it blew my mind.
@@Gwhisky I agree. I have stocked up on quite a few on those. Including a splurge buy on the Bunna 22 Moine PX. The 2008, Moine Bourdeaux is also excellent. There is something about the Bunna house style that gets me.
Damn, now I want a dram, and its 8am on a workday.
Thrilled to hear the review. I happened to buy the OLC and MRC at auction earlier this week. Haven’t seen a Port Charlotte at the local liquor stores in my hometown, Toronto, in years, but when I saw they were available I just couldn’t resist. A bit pricier than I wanted to pay but life is short. Can’t wait to try them both. Maybe an early Christmas lol.
Bill Phil from W.D. O' Connell single malt peated series. O M G ..... liquid heaven. Need.
Since creosote was prohibited over here in 2003, I've tried both Ronseal and Cuprinol, but honestly they're not as complex and flavourful as the old stuff.
😂😂😂
Do you have any recommendations for something similar to Nikki from the barrel and Hibiki Harmony? Would love to see a video on Japanese whiskeys. Cheers
I like Ichiro's Malt white label. Excellent stuff!
From my perspective, the OLC is the best one in cask exploration series. The flavor profile is quite close to Ardbeg uigeadail.
There are definitely similarities, but my preference is definitely the OLC! 🥃
Anyway, Fernando d Cst is high quality. Relative small production, organic I believe, just by default. Etc.
They haven't just gone and sourced casks from whoever here.
I'm sure they haven't sourced from just whoever. Some of the best cask play in the game. Didn't know about the bodega. Cheers, thanks for the info! 🥃
@@Gwhisky 👍
Comparing the PAC:01 and the OLC:01 I'd prefer the OLC. It's great whisky.
Most people seem to think so. A mood thing for me. I'm basically in love with this whole series, though. 🥃
Hi Geoff, can you maybe do a review of classic laddie 8? Still haven't opened the bottle yet, waiting for your review on it :)
I'll try to grab one soon. 🥃
@@Gwhisky tried it yesterday; compared with classic laddie, less rugged, slightly more balanced would be my first thoughts.
Have you had the Octomore 13.2? Curious where you would rank this vs that. Can’t believe the 13.2 would be 3x better to justify the price, but I’ve been surprised before!
I haven't had that one, unfortunately. I'm not in the habit of buying Octomores these days. As you said, pricey. I sincerely doubt its worth triple the price. 🥃
the whiskies on your cabinet keeps changing, where's that glenturret gone? 😂
Hah still there. It'll get a review soon enough! 🥃
👌☝🥃
Nice review as usual, but I do have to say this - Water can't be wet, its fluid. 😜
😑
Guess Geoff won't be reviewing Port Charlotte again, no more freebieeees ;-)
PC 10, Ardbeg 10, Ledaig 10, an indi bottle of Caol Isla, all a bit cheaper matey 🙂
Would you believe that I scored a Port Charlotte Islay Barley recently? Can't wait to crack it 👌😎
Love that series. Haven't had the 2013 yet, though. No doubt its fantastic. 🥃
@@Gwhisky I got the 2013 and also got the Laddie 13 Islay Barley. Gonna crack them together 🤔
So should I get this for $240 AUD or the Springbank 10 for $289 AUD….
Never seen a bottle of SB here, and they are coming in a tiny quantiy this year, but don’t know when so I could miss out at around $200.
Get the SB just so I have one, or is this PC better than the SB10?
I prefer this to SB10. SB10 is a beauty, but that price is waaaay too high. 🥃
It’s insanity, and I do love my PC10…..I also cry my self to sleep every night too, so….you know…I’ll buy both
@@CameronWaldon 😂 Fair enough. Enjoy!
The OLC has nothing on the MRC for me, I had a birthday tasting of their whole line of cask exploration and MRC destroyed them
The CC was super interesting, not often you get to try a peated cognac matured whisky
Really need to get my hands on a full bottle of the MRC. I tried a sample and loved it. Sold out here in Taiwan, unfortunately. Cheers! 🥃
I think it's pretty much sold out everywhere. Went through dubai Airport at Christmas and they listed MRC in the duty free, but it was the MC.
I was so disappointed
Geoff! Great episode! Finally put out my first episode. If you get a chance, it would mean a lot to me if you check it out and let me know what you think!
Will do!
Get to the point Geoff, did you really love it? I hate it when you beat about the bush and sit on the fence.
So-so. 😂🥃
