    I couldn’t agree more, playing the Harmonica got me through some terrible times. Some years ago I suddenly without warning I lost everything. My wife, kids, house & job all within a month or so!!. Result…several bouts of deep depression & anxiety. Under treatment, it was suggested that I learn to play an instrument. Eventually I came across the Harp and learned to play it.
    Personally I like playing any type of tune but not much blues. Well, many years later, I now go around the local old peoples homes, churches etc., playing for those less fortunate than myself. I’m an OAP now & it just goes to show how beneficial the Harp can be.
    Hey, it can even be used as a dietary aid!!!…I found out that some people eat NOT BECAUSE they are actually hungry, more so because they fancy something which they happen to be thinking about.
    So when the urge comes on, just get your Harp out & start playing…then you will find that the urge to eat has gone away. Strange but true.

    75-year-old harmonica student... No Dementia Here. Was a self-taught player for over forty years. As a beginner student in this program, it has really improved my performance abilities and musical skills. Very rewarding experience to finally be taught the correct way to play single notes with an understanding of musical theory.

    I'm 77 years old and am having a blast learning my harmonica. I really don't care what it sounds like to other people - I just tell them to turn their hearing aids off if they don't like it. I've been practicing learning one riff at a time. I'll never lead the band but I sure as hell will learn to be a backup player.

    I am 67 and just got my first harmonica today. I can already tell that this is going to help me with my breathing and oxygen levels. And it's fun. Challenging, but fun. Thanks so much.

    Enjoying the musical challenge at this older age. Agree that seeing the progress leaves you wondering how far you can go with this great instrument.

    Thanks Tomlin for these great tips. I'm going at a snails pace right now in the school. So I won't compare myself to others. This is my journey and no one can take that from me. The harmonica is a joy to learn. It's so small, I can carry it in my pocket. I couldn't have gotten through the pandemic with out Tomlin's school and my harmonica.

    Great video, have wanted to take this seriously since 18, at 54 I'm finally getting round to it.
    Another great tip: Watch all of Tomlins videos on Common Mistakes and Basic Techniques, it's the little things Tomlin teaches that have made learning so much easier.

    At 63, I indeed feel a time pressure, in everything. Think improve slowly with harmonica. But now, I push myself to learn and cigar box guitar 🎸. I made it, and now begin.
    Sounds crazy, isn't it? 😎

    Awesome video. Thanks for the input from your students. I find that I just don't have enough time to practice because of my work schedule so it does take me longer to get some of the lessons down pat. These tips are a great encouragement to me and from one student to your other students thanks for the inspiration. :)

    Thanks Tomlin. Good post. Gotta say that some basic music theory is a help to progressing. But If you're starting out don't let that put you off. Just play notes that sound good together, and focus on playing so you get a reliable sound. Later on, theory will help you understand why they sound good together. I think both Mozart and McCartney said something like that ..

      To be fair the “younger” crowd.. already has everything laid on a silver platter.. (kids are chalk full of potential and can obtain anything so long as they work towards their goals and are not afraid of hard work) happy Tom included us oldies, cause sometimes I feel like we’re sometimes forgotten. This brings me hope.

    Thanks for this Tomlin. At 68 after open heart surgery I had to give up guitar/banjo/mandolin/fiddle due to a "mishap" in surgery. Now that harp is it. So you think there might be hope for me to get the 3 hole full step bend? lolol

    • @TimGreig
      @TimGreig 8 месяцев назад +1

      67 here. Got that bend in 3 weeks. Not saying that to impress but to inspire.And of course I'm not anywhere near consitantly hitting the 1/2, 1 and 1 1/2 bends but...All it took was one video and a bend app which told me where I was in the bend. After that its just body/mind memory. 2 1/2 weeks was spent looking at a bunch of vidoes that really didnt explain much at all!

    • @uralpilot
      @uralpilot 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks Tim. I can get a 1/2 step, just not the full step or step and a1/2. I have no illusion of ever playing like Tomiln. But I sure love it! I just have to keep working on it and I will get it!@@TimGreig

    • @TomlinHarmonica
      @TomlinHarmonica  9 месяцев назад +1

      You are doing great! Most people don't even start to try bending after only a month - It takes a very long time to get. Here are some ideas for bending ruclips.net/video/cbiOtr_pNyk/видео.html BUT you need to make sure that you have consistent clean notes with natural breath and a relaxed position before you attempt bends.

    Well, I'm old beginner. But I have a question a little out of this topic.
    I practice on few brands harmonics and on few keys. I change them a few times per session, play same songs with different keys and so on.
    Is this a huge mistake, that slows down my improvement?
