He was a pretty menacing presence throughout the film because he was a duke and dukes are known as very powerful people and that was the scary part, He was capable of anything and he could've won had Toulouse not interfered also I hated him because he was a fucking jerk!
This is one of my favorite songs in the movie! :D What makes it even better is that, in-universe, NONE of the characters planned any of this. They're literally making up an entire elaborate song and dance on the fly, using whatever props they can grab and whatever comes into their heads. And somehow they A. communicate everything perfectly to each other and B. manage to pull it off so well that the Duke buys it. It's absolutely brilliant! :D
Its funny (no pun) but the whacky manic energy and shameless goofiness that could've and probably did turn some off is the very reason why it has endured all these years and is now regarded as a classic, I think.
I mean even if i caught them in bed. If everyone just showed up and bust out a seemingly rehearsed synchronized song and dance, I'm inclined to believe them
There is something about this movie and especially this scene which makes me so happy! I have a great love for history, theater, movies and opera and also a big fan of Baz Lurhman :)The idea of this movie is in my opinion a very colourfull way of telling about the whole timeperiode regarding the Bohemic and artistic way of being in Paris around the 1900. The stories my great grandparents told about that timeperiod was a bit like this scene, with people getting the best out if it and coming up with very creative ideas with fx the play in front of the duke. In a way the same aswell as what my grand parents told about the roaring 20's.As if it was a New Years Eve with out an end :D Very much spectacular indeed :D
Fun fact: Satin's elephant room is based on the Elephantine Colossus from Coney Island, NY, itself based on Lucy the elephant who still resides in Margate, NJ This iconic set piece is itself based on a South Jersey tourist trap.
The main melody with lyrics "so exciting, so delighting" came from a classical orchestral piece by Offenbach, "Can-can from Orpheus in the Underworld" then there was this short part from the piece "Sound of Music", and later another sentence from Elton John's "Your Song".
I'm interested in the first man's face contains both of aphrodisiac or being threatening to the owner . He resembles the ex-president of my working company. Inevitably biiter smile.
The man is the Duke in the show, a potential investor for their script and show. The entire troupe sang to him to cover up for Satine and Christian, as Satine thought Christian was the Duke instead and had a dance with him before going to her chamber or bedroom.. and that was when the Duke appeared so they put up something as the Duke was after Satine for himself... Kind of messy, my explanation hahahahaha
Because the play they want him to invest in is SO DELIGHTING THE AUDIENCE WILL STOP AND CHEER, SO EXCITING IT WILL RUN FOR FIFTY YEARS! I don't see how they could've been any clearer with you. (go watch this movie it is unironically the greatest love story of all time bar none as well as hilarious and excellently written and scripted. I legitimately hate musicals yet I sat through this wide eyed not even noticing it was a musical until I was singing along)
@@joecarey3969 Pfff, that's part of what makes it great! That and the fact all the music comes together so well, even during scenes when you know the lyrics are from other songs! SPECTACULAR, SPECTACULAR!
I got a free ticket to see a musical theatre production of this before I saw the movie. It was entirely based on the movie, but played as much more down to earth and was more coherent and had a much better flow. Was disappointed to find out the movie was… this. I didn’t hate it, but it was just kinda meh and by the end I was mostly just watching for Nicole Kidman.
They could have just released this as the trailer for the movie and it would have been perfect.
It actually would, cause it's unknowingly a summary of the whole plot on top of including the extravagant atmosphere and light hearted bits
that’s so true lol
“And in the end should someone die?”
*Everyone looks around awkwardly*
Damn, dude. Satine is standing right there.
I feel like I know the music this song is to. What’s it called?
@@logancomics commonly known as the can can
oh yes loll
“Galop infernal” from Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld operetta. Colloquially known as “the can can.”
The dukes face just... It's just so realistic. It's confusion, more confusion and non-understanment in one face. Love it.
When he sung that part "its a little bit funny this feeling inside" everyone in the damn cinema cracked up 🤣
The Duke is one of the greatest and most underrated villains in film history.
No.
Agreed. In any other movie he'd be unbearable and ridiculous but he fits perfectly in Moulin Rouge lol
He was a pretty menacing presence throughout the film because he was a duke and dukes are known as very powerful people and that was the scary part, He was capable of anything and he could've won had Toulouse not interfered also I hated him because he was a fucking jerk!
Maybe that’s because compared to everyone else he seems “normal” in comparison
"Oh, look, a frog!", he says during the Come What May sequence😂
1:34 I love how the Duke’s getting into it 🤘🏻
"Generally, I like it"
This entire film is like if ADHD was transmitted into a feature film and this one scene is the pinnacle of that.
I wonder if that's part of why I loved it so much when it came out.
I felt that the opening was a little more manic.
"And on top of your fee, you'll be involved artistically!"
Love it!
"🤨What do you mean by that?"
The Orientalist version of sound of music gets me every time

I swear, this song and 'Come What May' are what makes me describe my opinions about the movie as thus: 'Generally, I like it.'
Ewan McGregor and Deborah Chow pitching the Obi-Wan Kenobi show to execs at Lucasfilm:
Its funny (no pun) but the whacky manic energy and shameless goofiness that could've and probably did turn some off is the very reason why it has endured all these years and is now regarded as a classic, I think.
I love all the weird sounds they put in it
“And in the end should someone die?” Okay Shakespeare
Somebody once called it "an absent trip of jukebox musical" and that's the best description I've read of that movie
Was it an absent trip or an acid trip? Or maybe an absinthe trip? (Since absinthe is very much a trip lol)
@@Nexol13 definitely the second option! :D
I love how he talks in the beginning trying to comvince him😂
Duke moves are amazing 02:44
This scene is my personality in a nutshell 😂😂😂
We should beeeeeee……. Friends, mine match

0:18 he really was like 💃💃
One of the greatest musicals of all time
2:15 best part of the movie
that part made me laugh so much omg
Jim Broadbent, like everything he's in, is great in this

*These cartoon sound effects 😂😂😂*
i thought this movie was a joke at the start then i started crying at the end?! what?!
the hills are alive with the sound of music.

Loved this movie. Thanks for uploading this song
Best part of the movie

Lady Camden looks real good here 😍😍
I'm sitting here watching the scene thinking "is everybody in this movie in an insane asylum or something?"
Lol this scene reminds me of american horror story asylum
what a spectacular!
I wonder what was going through Richard Roxburgh's head when filming this.
Jim broadbent , legend
2:14
Me when explaining about my video game to my mum:
Why wasn't this song on the album, I wonder?
It was actually. Well on the 2th one, "Moulin Rouge! Music from Baz Luhrmann's Film, Vol. 2".
We had to watch this because we are playing orpheus in the underworld in orchestra 😭
Does Toulouse say “Delighting” or “Dewighting” in this scene? And does he call himself Toulouse or Towouse?
This pitch song version is better than the musical.
“Yes, but what happens in the end?”
These guys made themselves look like idiots, and we love it.
BRAAAAAAAAIN RAAAAAAAAAAPE!
This isway too chaotic
Is the music itself from another piece? If so, what?

It's can can music
Is that woman played by David Wenham in this scene?

Its so funny until he says & in the end should someone die☹️ made me feel dread of whats to come
Ok, but did it really need to be edited like that?
Why not?
Yes
I'm glad I walked out on this back in the nineties... They filmed this whole feature length abomination like a Chucky cheese commercial.

I've never watched this movie before today and this is all a lot wilder than I ever imagined
I am loving it
