"Nice, I added a feature. It's blinking."
Such an engineer oh my god.
I just saw this video, and after 3 years, I can professionally prove that it is still a valid claim XD
Everything he does is actuated to teach about possible situations and mistakes... it's actually an excellent teaching technique. In this case he's suggesting that if you wanna use the light blinking (he calls it new feature) just don't shield the circuit from the light bulb to generate the feedback.... that's all ...
if he suddenly stops uploading videos to RUclips, i think we all know why he stopped, RIP ElectroBoom
Nah, he knows exactly what he is doing.
lol good one
Cuz he chirped a hell’s angel

The best thing about these videos is the suspension of waiting for something to fry
Suspense*
***** No, i got really confused about the English language for a minute as i was writing that comment, a proper sentence would be ''The best thing about these videos is the suspense of something frying.'' i believe, well, this is ElectroBOOM, you're expecting electric contraptions to go BOOM
Articounias Or blow up.
Articounias Your profile pic fits the sentence somehow
Or noglas sharp chin
The capacitive voltage voltage divider at the input is actually quite brilliant
Agree. Never used such a divider before. would it also work with inductors instead I wonder...
+spinvalve No!
soo..... where your video??.. new video...
FindLiberty why not? Inductors have impedances too.
His cap dropper is wonderful if good caps are used; that's used for most line powered LED replacement lamps these days. Maybe they'd work in theory*, but at 50/60Hz, how "big" would an SERIES inductor have to be to "hold back" enough current/drop the voltage? (Our friend Henry is a direct conductor for low freq AC and is pretty useless for resisting DC.) A small one would effectively "resist" and block any HF, but the low freq AC power component would never be attenuated enough (even if the inductor had an iron core and a mile of windings). e.g., a florescent lamp ballast. Two 20:1 properly sized wire-wound iron core inductors in PARALLEL might work if placed very close together. Let's just call it a transformer. *(IDK, I'm just a self-taught hack.)
The funniest part of watching this video is knowing that you knew exactly what you were doing before you caused each one of those short circuits to happen. Your intelligence and generosity in teaching others this kind of stuff is amazing! Keep up the entertainingly good work!
"I added a feature."
Are you sure you're an engineer and not a programmer?
In that case he would've said "It's a feature not a bug!"
thats what i was thinking lmao
"shutting down when you search? thats no bug! its a feature!"
***** Automated process closures condition the user to make frequent backups. Anyone who relies on the application to perform progress and backup checking for them are using the program wrong. PEBCAK.

Fun fact, that oscillating feedback loop that was making the light strobe has been used in electronic music as a "ghetto" sort of envelope generator! Bruce Haack mentioned this technique in the liner notes from his last album "BITE", which was essentially a 101 course for teenagers to start fiddling with electronics and synthesizers in 1981. Technically it's called a "vactrol", and Bruce gave the example of using it as a way to control the amplitude of a white noise source to make simulated cymbals and other percussion sounds. It was also used in several Fender and Gibson guitar amps in the 50s and 60s to create that surf rock "tremolo" effect.
I hope your insurance agent never sees these videos
Legend says until today no company offers him insurance
+Rusty Harris Insurance is for the weak. FOR CHAOS! (and random electrocutions)
I doubt he ever asked for insurance policy.
Insurance companies don't enlist suicide BOOMers as their customers.
If he was actually clueless to make all those mistakes (for real), he wouldn't be around to make all this many videos.

I genuinely can't put into words how happy Mehdi makes me. What an absolute gift of a person
00:34 I think that was the best one so far, although the Tesla coil was pretty good too.
I love you Mehdi, you are everything good in one person. I didn't think I would develop such a fascination for electrical circuits.
I'm in college to be an electrician, and me and my classmates laugh uncontrollably at your videos. Thank you so much!
When you touch a circuit I'm always scared about how things will go wrong
@TheAstro30 it's like a jumpscare for the viewer
What i heard when the video started:
"Hi, today i'm going to electrocute myself accidentally over 30 times"
xDD
+Alexjgate Electrocution means execution by Electricity resulting in death.
What you really meant to say is that today he is going to SHOCK himself with Electricity over 30 times.
+Achraf Almouloudi Electroboom will still manage to find a way to electrocute himself over 30 times.
Nookie Nookie He probably did, that guy seems to be immortal, freaky.
***** Thanks for the lesson xD
+Achraf Almouloudi Yeah, that's pretty much the same thing as a grammar Nazi. But it's cool because you're smarter than everyone.
They won't be able to badmouth you if they're dead, so this is a flawless plan (maniacal laughter)
Once again hurting yourself for out education and entertainment. Good job

thanks for the correction :) i hit the wrong letter
+niko nikogovic he's doing it so that you can see how dangerous it is to play with electricity, come on guys
that is where "our education" comes in.
Also, i study EE, i am aware ;)
more like educational, his little sparks and explosions are just getting annoying. Not even the least bit funny anymore.

Usually, what you are doing/suggesting is relatively safe.
But disconnecting the earth of the scope, and then applying the ground clip of the scope to a high-potential line, is dangerous: it can put (high) voltage on the case of the scope! If you've got metal knobs, you get shocked everytime you turn them.
Use a differential probe (or an isolation transformer) instead.
He knows everything and is careful he does accidents to inform us

Wtf was that
I said I'm sorry
Its Mickey Mouse voice
"It is AC, that AC too, what the hell?" XD
2:27
You seem to enjoy the frying of circuits. Now I am just wondering how hard would it be to use a photoresistor to control a relay that would actually control the AC supply. Wouldn't that be much easier and safer?
+Nishant Arora That's very much the same thing. Just that the relay coil takes much more current than the opto-triac and so the used supply won't be able to provide power. To keep things small and low power, this is the way to go. Otherwise you can go any route you want.
AND the light dimmers have similar TRIAC in their design.
+ElectroBOOM yes...yes I know some of these words.
+ElectroBOOM thinking about it, it does makes sense, but please be careful! Also this would work with 220V-250 AC? what else will I need?
This guy is fantastic. I just discovered his channel today, and I already love his work. Very funny. Some of the videos have what I personally would consider obvious special effects work, but the videos are funny on an intelligent and technical level. It's like Home Improvement meets Bill Nye meets the Marx Brothers.
0:40 twist 😂😂😂
I don't care if the explosions are fake or not, you'r reaction is just the best.
Keep up the great work!
I get the distinct feeling that your channel is an elaborate IQ test.
It is a ScareQ test. I get quite scared when it sparks. My ScareQ must be pretty high.
If you double tap to rewind 10 secs at 1:29, you get an almost perfect loop of him explaining the loop his circuit is doing, so you can loop Mehdi talking about the loop for as long as you want lol
Damn... now every time you begin to probe anything, I will cringe and brace myself... damn
I seriously love your channel so much! Definitely a 👍 up. I got an ignitor from a grill lighter and the arc between the 2 wires is half an inch long. I thought it was cool and shocked my leg then the door knob with my hand on it. It felt pretty good, like a static charge.
0:29 and then, Iron Maiden had the idea to make the song "Fear of the dark". LMFAO
World's #1 electrical engineer!
You could have just use a relay and photocell to make life easier
send me the schematic
Ok how do I send it
send it as a message to my facebook page. Thanks!
Ok I will let me draw it 😄
Did you notice it's the same circuit? :D
you're very smart with electrical, I remember having a super hard time in college with this shit. Defiantly the weakest part of my education, looking at the same equipment you are using and the diagrams makes me realize how little I learned.

Mehdi, Its not "Full Bridge Rectifier". It's "FULLLL BRIIDGE REECTIFIER!!!!!!" (0:09)
I love your videos and share them on facebook thanks for the laughs. It must take so much time to make several circuits to fry. It takes balls to shock yourself especially when you know it is coming.
Jeez, how many times did you have to remake that board?
started watching the videos for the humor but I got curious about these things and started reading about some of these components and how bridge rectifier work. can you make videos explaining some of this stuff?
i love the channel, but i wouldnt trust anything you sent me haha
You tend to go on about "it's not current that kills" and talking about voltage, I've never thought it was specifically current, I always thought it was Watts (since Watts = Amps x Volts) which I don't remember you mentioning.
(love the videos by the way)
+NAT0P0TAT0 I did say it was both hand in hand. But n fact time also plays a role. So I would say joules = V x I x t might be a better choice
Please Mention: If you insulate the earth wire of your scope and connect scope's ground to your live circuit, your scope becomes live too. Especially the BNC plugs or in case of an old scope with metal housing, your whole scope.
I saw about 4 videos of yours... I subscribed for the explosions
1:10 everytime I'm compiling for the first time.
I like how much you love the capacitor
I would donate to your patron if you made videos more often.
+Rum Ham I would videos more often if you donated to my patreon!

I'm impressed at how many mains shorts that Rigol scope has survived. I bet by now that ground clip looks EPIC.
Hey you will probably never see this but I’ve noticed a common theme with all of your videos is that you discuss a bunch of different topics in one video. For example in this one you discussed the importance of realizing your scope is also earth grounded and how to properly probe a circuit that is also connected to mains. If im trying to find this video again in the future I have no way of finding it unless I also happen to remember the parent video. I use your videos for learning a lot but sometimes it’s hard to find them like talking about super capacitors on your graphite video or how the oven works on your death shower head video. Basically what I’m asking is that you include everything that’s talked about in the video in the description so that when I come back to learn something it’s easier to find. Thank you :)
I am new to electronics, and excited to learn more. But why did you do all of that stuff with the rectifier and capacitors, to convert the AC 120V to A DC output? Couldn't you have just used like a 9V battery. That is DC? Plus that seems a lot safer!
+Penguin Design Yup, that's safer. But that's a different circuit. This one is more complicated and most night lights use AC input, not a battery. Battery would be boring!

I've been binge wattching your videos and i honestly think your videos should be shown in schools, im sure you know when things are going to bang by now but still startle the audience into thinking you made a mistake, and it reminds me it isn't as easy as it looks and to do constant safety checks. Honestly should be shown in schools, you really make this stuff fun.

Holy shit. After watching you put the tape on that ground five times I finally understand why it was fucking up. Thanks man, you're teaching me shit every day.
what are you using to sense light in a room?
a light sensor
+Noel Goetowski Thanks captain!
+Etienne Urbain-Racine he uses a photo diode
Come to think of it, the Opto-TRIAC- plus power-TRIAC-solution ist rather elegant! You have isolation from your control circuit (like when using relays). And a huge bonus is the switching off at only lower currents. So you don't force open a switching contact mid-peak of the sine wave, and thus don't risk generating little arcs, which wear the contacts down or could fuse them together.
To be honest I'm more in the communication and RF part of EE, so I was always a little unsure about using TRIACs, I didn't really learn circuit design using them. But with a little thinking and a great example like this (thanks Mehdi!), I might use it in my little automated power-control.
capacitve divider at live going to a linear regulator?
kids go get a transformer unless you are feeling brave today.
+the real illuminati So like photonic induction channel? :P Its full of transformers defiantly not safer.
+the real illuminati
I do get a bit bit nervous that he has no fuse on the mains. I'm tempted to contact Mehdi with a request to include fuses in his schematics.
There is a serious side to these shenanigans that should be noted...
btw; your youtube name is sillier than mine :-)
+homerbloodysimpson A fuse would make the sparks a lot less bright.
+the real illuminati You would be shocked (haha) how many small mains powered devices use a capacitive dropper. I'm currently sitting in a room lit by LEDs run from capacitive droppers, and I even have a somewhat dodgy USB supply that uses one. So long as there is no possibility of touching the output, it's fine.
Nene I'm aware of that. but your leds are not exacly dangerous because you cant really get electrcuted, here he show people how to build it and make it possible to get a high voltage at the output.
I can not stress enough my absolute utter enjoyment of your videos!!! School would`ve been so much enjoyable with instructors like you! Keep up the AWESOME work!!!!!

He's trying to trick you into learning about electronics.
You should get inspired and realise that there's a whole world of interesting stuff out there to learn about.
Interesting stuff that gives you the power to make things happen.
Things other than explosions, sparks and _beep_ moments! :-)
+homerbloodysimpson I understand. It is just that I am a practicing Chemical Engineer who has little to no use of learning about a bridge rectifier! ;)
+Hassaan M a FULL bridge rectifier! :D
That serves as a really great analogue for explaining how feedback works;) thx

I think every electrical safety training video I've ever watched would have been more memorable and more fun if they had been intercut with illustrative clips of electroboom blowing things up.
thank you for f***ing up to show us how not to kill ourselves
To fix your scope issue, you could also take a three pronged extension cord (like one you would use outside) and snap off the ground pin at the end you plug into the wall. Then you don't have to put tape on your plug and have it fall off inside the plug or something stupid.
