When you reveal another offer you are revealing to them that you are unhappy and actively seeking a different employer. The counteroffer is to keep you on for a few more weeks so they can seemlessly hire a replacement. It is for their convenience and to mitigate the damage of a sudden termination.

Thank you sooooo much. This has happened to me exactly as you explained. You explained exactly how I felt with the counter offer. They EXCEEDED my expectations of what I figured a counter offer would have been. Even offering my wife a position of employment. Right down to the owner coming to see me. I will say they have made the offerings so appealing that IT MAKES ME FEEL GUILTY TO LEAVE. I fill a role that is needed and have done WAY MORE than the minimum and saved the business $1000’s. But they would not fix my pay. Even after years of complaining. Now the request of past has been changed and much much more has been dished up. But I am sticking to my guns and following my gut and leaving. To feel better about my decision I prayed that I get confirmation I am
Making the right choice. God said to RUclips leaving when a counter offer is given. I found you first and foremost. Right on top. Two videos later you confirmed my confusion. Thank you. God bless. And I pray many who are in my shoes see this video. I’ll be sharing this video.

The funny thing is I said to the person trying to negotiate me staying something so drastic that I thought I had made my voice heard. I said “you could offer me a $100,000 a year keys to the store the alarm code with come and go as I needed and the answer is still no.”
I work at a car dealership. I do tons of work in and out of my job description and like I said saved the dealership thousands and thousands of dollars. Just like when they sell cars and are desperate to make that quota they say and make deals you wouldn’t believe. They thought they can do it. And the end result I had to buckle down and stand my ground. I’m not property you fix when it is broken. You take care of me as the time goes by. Not when it is oh damn we need this guy. They became a day late and a dollar short. The way I look at it they could have prevented this years ago. You maintain the people’s happiness by caring while you have them not when you are going to loose them.

My coworker offered to increase my salary by 12k a year if I stayed. Currently it’s me and one other coworker, who’s leaving because he’s sick of it. So that would mean I would have to do my job and his for 12k more a year, even though he makes waaaaay more than what the 12k would put me at for a yearly salary. Safe to say I’m looking for new jobs and not looking back.

Am I the only one thinking too many people think of jobs like if they where cell phone companies? Like you gotta threaten with leaving, so you get a fair/ better deal, because beign loyal to the company doesn't pay off anymore?
It is one thing to get a counteroffer when you turn in your notice. It is another to do some interviews here and there in order to force management's hands into offering you raises and better deals. Odly enough, this seems to work like a charm: the person who will dropp dissatisfaction and leaving hints here and there is more likely to be promoted that the trooper who is quietly shouldering the work. If you are a trooper, never accept the counteroffer. Cause they never noticed you before, and Will change you for some malcontent with no loyalty in a heartbeat

"More pay, means more expectations." Taking it back to sports: I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. When Jim McIlvaine was a second round pick with the Washington Bullets/Wizards, and making the league minimum $150,000 (1994-95 figures), he was considered kind of a steal. Then, as a free agent, back when centers were a HUGE ingredient to winning championships in the NBA, and he was a great per-minute shot blocker, he signs a 7 year $35 million contract. Now, his meager SCORING numbers draw complaints from all of the fans. He was signed by us in 1996, and even in 2023 as we speak, fans in Seattle STILL talk about "how the McIlvaine signing sent the Sonics on a downward spiral, that they never recovered from." So, Ben is right: More money is always great, but we all have to remember, that that also means more responsibilities, and higher expectations. If one was making $70,000, and got a counter offer for $85,000, even subconsciously, your managers are going to expect you to produce like an $85,000 worker.

I look at counters as a bit of an insult, because I don't look for something else until after I've already given them a chance to rectify the situation, which is usually related to compensation. They're saying, "we've always known that you're worth more, and we're willing to negotiate now because we HAVE to." No. That time has passed, and they've essentially admitted that they were deliberately under-compensating me because they thought they could get away with it. How am I supposed to have any trust in them going forward?

Issue is no growth or official promotion, although i do assist with many admin duties that arise.
