If you have thousands of beetles you won't have the time to pick them out. In that case, you would want a self sorting set up. If you don't want to pick the beetles out every week or two you can just use oats for their bedding and put a screen bottom on your drawer. Correct? And put very little bran in the drawer underneath that the eggs fall into. As you will want to keep adding to it's content every two weeks. Adding baby Mealies to the same drawer over and over. Be sure to add moisture so the drawer with the Mealy babies and eggs so they will grow big and strong. Hope this is correct. Great Video!
Those poor babies... I remember taking care of one in school. Watching it from and egg to a teeny tiny worm that grew into a big larva. Once it got to the pupa stage I was so excited! I would visit my science class everyday I had school to check on him. (My teacher was so sweet, she just let me go see him on my lunch break lol) Then he turned into a beautiful Darkling Beetle. I called him "Valo" (It means Light in Finnish). I got to take him home. All the other kids thought I was weird because they didn't even want to look at their baby lol. I was a proud mama.
You sound like I was in school with stuff like this! I found black swallowtail caterpillars on my carrots and I took them inside to prevent them from being parasitized by wasps and I would feed them fresh carrot tops several times a day. After a few weeks they turned into beautiful black swallowtail butterflies. I love doing stuff like this!
Hi, could you possibly give details of your tower storage boxes used for this purpose, I presume I could get them from Amazon but they list so many different ones and I would like to be sure of getting the ideal size. Thanks.
What ratio of adult beetles to growing worms... And then how do you know how many worms to let mature to be your breeding stock? Do you put them in a special container? Could you sift the beetle drawer so the eggs fall through into a clean drawer rather than trying to pick out the adults?
Can I use Zoo Med's - Eco Earth Coconut Fiber as a substrate for breading meal worms and super worm? Will I need bran or any additional food source or can I just use the Coconut Fiber without any other food source?
Hey! You can use coco fibre as a substrate but you would need to feed them as well I'm afraid. If you gave them some chopped potato or carrot in there as well then they should be fine.
Hello! You can keep, grow and breed mealworms on any substrate so long as they have access to food and a source of water. I have kept them in sawdust before and they have been fine so long as they are fed. It’s just easier if they are kept in an edible bedding.
I saw another video (haven't seen this yet to the end) but you can put a screen with little holes at the beetle's draw so they fall into the other draw.
This was helpful to me as I was wondering if oatmeal would work. But @City Self-Sufficiency replied to my question above and said it would. So now I'm double sure.
Hi great video, at 4:40 you say you put the adults in the next drawer above, then at 4:49 you say the next drawer above contains the babies, can you please clarify? Thank you...
Hello! I would start with about 100- 200 at least. Some will die, and some will fail to pupate. So that way you can pretty much ensure when they pupate you will have plenty of healthy adults ready start the next batch and the colony numbers will multiply nice and quickly.
I find that sifting them through the large size plastic canvas is a really easy way to separate most of the adults, if you find that a lot of young have hatched before you move them on

Thank you for your information
what do you do with the dead beetles< can you feed those to the chickens as well??
Good video hun appreciate the tips super helpful 🙃
Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful! :)
Hi...is raising these live worms to feed more cost effective than feeding the dry ones? ie do you end up with enough on hand to feed your chickens?
The bran feeds them and the veg and fruit gives them their liquids well done 🦄
I did not hear what the ideal temp is.
Can you start with adult larvae or do you start with the beetle?
Do the adult beetles die after laying eggs? I just had my first hatch and moved my beetles over now 4 days later half have died and I'm not sure why.

Hey. I got mine from a shop rather than online but they are a standard A4 size that would usually be used in an office. Hope that helps.
@@cityself-sufficiency Yes that gives me an idea of what to go for, thanks.
What is the nam if this matereil
What was the other worm you had in there???

@@cityself-sufficiency No, they will starve on coco. They need any kind of grain meal. Young worms benefit from finer feeds, I use budget flour.

Qtn how do get water to the new hatchling ?
Through vegetables
Great tutorial, have you eaten any mealworms?
Nice information but if someone doesn't have worms so how we can produce it self thanks appreciate
How do you think?
I heard through oatmeal if you keep the box open!
Since the eggs are microscopic and not visible to the human eye, how do you separate the Beatles from the eggs to prevent them eating them?
I saw another video (haven't seen this yet to the end) but you can put a screen with little holes at the beetle's draw so they fall into the other draw.
I just ask John,Paul,George and Ringo to stand in the corner whilst I sieve the eggs out.
Cool
is the potato and carrot cooked ?
No they are raw.
i subscribed when i saw you have a biltong video. i dont want to order it, and i cannot find anyone to make it
What is the bedding? I can't understand some of your words sorry.
They video is very very good, I just need the name of your materials, etc.
Thanks!
Wheat Bran

The only thing I have at my house is oatmeal & the mealworms love it!

david she said “Next drawer above”, not the highest.
How many do you start with?

I Have European Starlings and They eat Mealworms like Crazy! 😳👍🏻
Name of things
nice
Can you send a written details please
Will oatmeal work?
Yes! Oatmeal is perfect as it is nice and soft even the tiniest mealworm will happily eat it.
@@cityself-sufficiency Okay, thank you very much for the quick reply. I can't wait to have a small mealworm farm for my chickens.

something is missing here
Too bad she does not answer any questions in the comments, but she didn't invite questions, either, so...😅
I would want to know when to retire the breeding beetles and how to replace or add to them.
