It's a cloudy summer morning. You slowly brush your dark hair, not paying attention to what your hands are doing.
It's been weeks you haven't heard from him, since the night he confessed his love to you. Lying down in a field, the grass brushing against your bare skin, your white dress flowing with the wind. There, as the sun was disappearing in the horizon, three words escaped his mouth. How could somebody love you ? It must've been a lie, he wasn't in his right mind...
A tear runs heavily down your face, down to your neck, near the necklace he gave you.
"I'll wait for you", he said. "Meet me on the platform tomorrow at noon, before my train leaves." He stood up vigorously, and tenderly kissed your forehead before running towards the path leading to the village he was staying in.
    "I know you'll come !"
You slammed your hair brush on your desk, crying bitterly. Those were the last words you heard from him.
You get up to look out your small window just to see the flowery fields one more time. Listening to the echoes of a train going away in the distance, you wonder if you'll ever see him again...

He sat in the grimy carriage, hands clasping a withered bunch of flowers.
They had been fresh this morning. They had been fresh as he laid them on the dresser and went to pick out a nice shirt. He had settled on a deep blue when the phone rang. The call came. Grandfather had passed. He knew what this meant very well. He wasn’t going to London to visit anymore. He was going to stay.
He didn’t want to. He had never wanted to. The power play, the lies, the deceit, the treachery. He had planned to live out his life here. Married to the girl who lived in the fields. He was going to see her today. He glanced at the flowers on the table, still fresh. They’d been for her. He’d planned to come back after a month or so and ask her if she wanted to spend her life with his.
He slipped back into memories merely a fortnight old.
_His grandfather lay on the bed, frail._
      _”My boy, how are you?”_
_He looked at his grandfather, weak and vulnerable and fought back the grief._
_”You can’t do this to me, old man. You can’t throw me back there to them, to_ her.”
_His grandfather smiled, “it’s only a visit boy. Look how you’ve grown. I haven’t seen a finer lad in my life. Just a week or so. For your old man,” he smiled, “you would, wouldn’t you?”_
_He grit his teeth. To him London meant_ her. _The woman who was his stepmother. She saw nothing in him but a heir. A heir to an estate, a respected name, and access to fine suitors to her daughter. But, for his grandfather he would have happily gone to the ends of the world._
      _”Of course grandfather.”_
_”That’s my boy,” he turned to his butler and nodded. That was the last he saw of him.”_
      “Sire.”
He looked up to see William, his grandfather’s butler, standing at the door.
“My apologies for your loss sire. It grieves me to speak of such matters in this time but,” he hesitated, “I have received very specific instructions to send you to London as soon as possible. Your mother-“
      _”Stepmother_ William.”
“-your stepmother is anxious about your health. She would like to be there for you,” a pause, “to console you.”
_Right,_ he thought. He knew her real motive was to marry him off to a girl devoted to her, who would torture him day and night till he wrote over the property.
      “Sire? The train-“
“The train leaves in three hours William. Please. Leave.”
“Sire, I beg your pardon, but you’ve been booked a ticket in the next train?”
“I’ll take the 11 o’ clock one William, thank you.”
      “But sir, I-“
“I said I’ll take the one at 11 William. Thank you.”
      “Yes sir.”
He looked up as William left, and for the first time in months he noticed the dark bags under his eyes.
The bags were still quite visible two hours later as he stood on platform, scanning the crowd.
“Sire, this is your compartment, will you be boarding now?”
      “Shh, William.”
      “But sire it-“
“Shut it William!” He snarled under his breath, before resuming his scouting. The clock was slowly itching past eleven but the girl was now where to be found.
      The train blew a whistle.
      “Sire...”
With one leg in the coach, he glanced at the crowd once again. The train lurched forward and he retreated.
William was saying something to him but he wasn’t listening as he looked out the window, flowers held tightly. He watched until the benches and tiles vanished and the crowd dwindled.
And now he sat there, the flowers wilted, staring at the countryside, reminded of the field he had confessed in barely a day ago.
Slowly he leaned over, and opened the window. The chance of him coming back, he knew, was minuscule. So small, it would be practical to consider it impossible.
He opened his hand, letting the flowers fall and closed his eyes.
      “I’m sorry my love.”

Breakin' up slowly is a hard thing to do
I love you only, but it's makin' me blue
So don't send me flowers like you always do
It's hard to be lonely, but it's the right thing
Are these my good years or do I have none?
Are there really good years for everyone?
I don't wanna live with a life of regret
I don't wanna end up like Tammy Wynette
'Cause breakin' up slowly is a hard thing to do
I love you only, but it's makin' me blue
So don't send me flowers like you always do
It's hard to bе lonely, but it's the right thing to do
Georgе got arrested out on the lawn
We might be breakin' up after this song
Will he still love me long after I'm gone?
Or did he see it comin' all along?
'Cause breakin' up slowly is a hard thing to do
I love you only, and it's makin' me blue
So don't send me flowers like you always do
It's hard to be lonely (Baby, breakin' up is hard to do)
Breakin' up slowly (Baby, breakin' up is hard to do)
Breakin' up slowly is a hard thing to do
I love you only, and it's makin' me blue
