I've forgotten something at a bush camp previously, only to return at a later date and retrieve what I forgot. There's much less opportunity for thieves when there is no one around. ~ Ben
When ever leaving my vehicle at camp I always make sure anything of value is put away out of sight and the vehicle is locked. As I sleep in the vehicle I often have my curtains closed anyway so that helps hide things. Generally though the expensive items are my cameras etc for filming my content and they all go with me on walks etc. If for some reason I'm using a tent it is basically the same, anything of value goes in the vehicle or is with me so only minimal stuff is laying around. Generally chairs etc I leave out set up along with a table etc but in saying that I try to avoid camping around others. To look at my general set up you will see my vehicle with an awning, my chair, maybe a table and a grill for cooking. I like to keep my camping simple. Another thing people need to think of when it comes to security is actually securing their loads. A number of times I have been driving a track and see things thay have fallen out of a Ute or blown off a roof. I got a nice ground sheet and a set of plates that way, someone had lost their load.
As a motocamper, security is concern. I have everything in panniers and top box. I have a bag on the back seat with a pacsafe steel mesh locking system. The tank bag is secured by a travel lock and bike cable, I can afford to loose it. Not to rub it in Ben, but I am heading off for a month long trip in 5 weeks. One of my stops is in Adelaide, might have to see what Snowys looks like in person.
I always take precautions when camping like keeping valuables out of sight. The only instance where I've had something stolen was someone pinched a bag of firewood while we slept. This was a good episode. Thanks.
For stuff on the roof racks we used some knaulocks to secure our tent and other bits that were loose type items, and yeah if going away from camp just make it look simple
My dad once said to me “locks only keep out honest people”. Sadly, so true. Lauren, you’re so right. Most theft is opportunistic, so if you make sure your campsite is better protected from than your neighbours, you’ll probably be ok. It’s like the guys on safari facing a lion and one puts runners on. His mate says “you’ll never outrun that lion.” He says “I only have to outrun you!”🤣
Great episode...I've always been paranoid leaving my Nemo star gazer chairs out...haven't had them stolen so far ( touch wood ) but I've been to smart to let anything happen....common sense yes but some places are full of thieves and bogans esp down here in Tassie.....I always put my expensive gear in the car and lock it if I go for a day hike or just a beach walk no matter what....use a steering lock for the car, leave music going softly in a tent with spare shoes next to the tent or swag make it look like someone is laying in there....leave some.hot water in a cup on a table when ya leave, or even better setup a trail cam pointed in your camp/car area incase anything happens you'll have footage or pics to show police....don't park near rowdy young people....Gee Ben ild.hate to get my roof rack stolen...oh wait that's why I got the father in law to weld the bolts on so they can't lol 😂 that would suck but....I always talk to close by neighbours camping so when I do go for a walk I ask them to look over.ky gear while I'm gone....oh another tip...when ya rock up to camp and get ya spot go out in the.middle do a full 360 recording video just to get everyone's number plates incase 😎
I set up a trail camera when i go bush overlooking camp site that can send alerts to phone if in a area that has coverage and we all know that will get pinched before anything else does
The only time I’ve had anything nicked was (as you two said) seemingly an opportunistic one. Someone came by our eski at Woodford and stole some ice bricks!
In regards to insurance and roof rack theft, it's more the roof rails that are stolen, and not roof racks. We have our friend's roof rail stolen overnight whilst we were camping at a National Park.
I haven’t had anything stolen from me while camping. But have encountered some bad camping “neighbours” on more than one occasion. Usually a group of belligerent men and usually drinking. This can REALLY ruin a trip. I have found the common denominator here to be campsites that are 1. Free. 2. Not far enough from a city or large regional centre.
An interesting episode with a bit to think about. I quite like the longer episodes because they’re often full of the banter that I enjoy so much. Still a good one. Thanks! 😊
the only ting I've ever lost whilst camping is a couple of tent pegs ,,,,,,,, i'm 64 been camping for most of my life . go bush is the answer .

It's all just common sense really, thanks for your thoughts here. Mick. ~ Ben
@@SnowysOutdoors Yeah I think it is too but it is always nice to get tips and tricks ecen on things like this.

You've got security sorted by the sounds, Peter. I'll try not to be jealous of your trip, hope you get a chance to call in to the store. ~ Ben
@@SnowysOutdoors I will be in Adelaide, definitely coming in

This was a good episode. Thanks.
Massive bugger about the firewood, but I guess better than having gear stolen.
Not a great feeling at any rate.

Those Kanu Locks look pretty cool, good way to add an extra layer of security. ~ Ben

Theres been quite a few suggestions of trail cams - had never considered them before.

Thanks guys .Some great tips ! 👍🍻

Ice bricks... times must have been tough. ~ Ben

Roof racks are the bracket and bar, so are you saying just the bar/rail was stolen? How annoying, seems actually quite pointless.
~ Lauren
@@SnowysOutdoors that's correct. It was just the bar that was taken. Quick and optimistic theft. Happened overnight while asleep.

great episode as always, good insight
Thanks!

Thought about getting a trail camera for security even if it's up the track a bit
That's potentially a good idea!
~ Lauren
I always leave some empty 12g shells at the front of the tent. Never lost anything. Yet.

Chuck an Apple I-tag or similar tracking item on some of your expensive gear.
