yes, and before 2011 it was a similar situation with RETB. But there hasn't actually been "variety" since 2001 when the services transferred from Central Trains to the Wales & Borders franchise, as Central had RETB-fitted 150s, 153s, 156s, 158s and even 170s running on the Cambrian Lines, although I hear the RETB equipment on the 170s didn't work that well so they were only used briefly. I saw a photo of a 170 at Aberystwyth in 2001 but can't find it anymore.

The fact is that they can ONLY use 158s because Arriva 158s have ERTMS which use unique to the line. That explains it! 🚆😊
