This is by far the best tutorial I've seen on how to pack a vortex bowl. I've watched numerous videos, but this is definitely the best.

i was looking up coal alternatives and it snowballed me here its crazy and awesome to see how many different people posts vids for this sort of thing and is pretty helpful considering that i got my first decently sized piece last year.
Just wanted to say thank you for this one. I was having trouble packing my vortex and getting the right amount of heat and this helped a lot. I'm barely 15 minutes into my session right now (smoking Starrbuzz Cosmo Power) and I'm already getting much better clouds and less harsh smoke, even with a 17" Junior. I just have to practice this method a little more to perfect it, but still much better than it was when i was having to end sessions 20 minutes in.

Very helpful tutorial! I was mislead today about vortex bowls and bought a phunnel bowl instead =\ now I know the difference and how to pack them when I get a vortex.

Hey thanks, I guess I was over packing my bowl, however I'm still amazed you're using 3 coals.. man if I use 2 even it gets harsh and burns way too quick and ruins the sesh
@kevjingle DId you chain smoke the entire bowl by chance? The water level should be approximately an inch above the bottom of the stem. The diffuser won't really effect the smoke so much as it stabilizes the rig.
For the most part, it's personal taste. Often times tall hookahs have larger openings to the hoses, and will provide less resistance and allow for a lighter drag.

@XXmynameisliamXX It's a mod. There is a heba diffuser at the end of the downstem. This breaks up the smoke into smaller bubbles. It makes the hookah quieter and the quality of the smoke better.
you should have put in the review for when there is anything stuck in the holes the best way to clear it out without worrying about breaking the bowl you can boil it out and its like a brand new bowl!
I see a lot of experienced hookah smokers using a wide variety of methods for poking holes in their foil. personally I use lots of tiny holes as opposed to fewer larger holes but I was wondering if there was a conclusive argument for one method or the other being clearly better. I've always had pretty consistent and high quality hookah sessions but I am also always interested in improving my hookah knowledge
@hookahrev No problem! Can I ask what the setup with your base was as well, though? I followed your guidelines and whatnot as far as packing it, poking the holes, and heat management went, but I wasn't able to produce anywhere near as much smoke as you were. So I was just wondering what you did with your base. Also, I'm using Romman, not Starbuzz, so I'm wondering if that is making a significant difference as well.
@Antmanpictures Have you tried using a smaller Egyptian grommet? The chinese thick ones that vortex bowls usually come with are very over sized for Egyptian pipes like KM's & MZ's.
thanks so much with all your help. I have a few more questions. 1 is a chinese grommet the same as a mod grommet and do you just slip the chinese one over it when you use your vortex bowl and where do you get most of your supplies from.
Ive learned how to pack the vortex bowl pretty well now thanks to you Jake. Also on that note im not lol because it seems that im not very consistent in poking the holes in the foil which is a very vital part in enjoying my session.Ive only probably gotten 2 bowls of where i can use 2 cole rotations which is very frustrating . Im pretty consistent in placing the shisha in the bowl though so that's not a problem. Any more tips or do i just need more practice? Thanks

What up jake, love the vids by the way. I got a question for the vortex bowl sometimes when I smoke and I'm using starbuzz it seems to just smoke the top half. After the first set of coals I put a second set on. Half way through the coals the flavor is gone. So I'm thinking it's done. But when to go dump it out it's only half cooked. Can u let me know what I'm doing wrong???

Personally, I really endorse using Coconaras like in the video. They've provided me the best hookah smoking experience. Although, a lot of my friends swear on the Fantasia-brand Natural coals.
Any difference in coal placement/management for quick lights? Or a good method to heat the regular coals w/o a torch, gas stove, etc...

@npeezy92 Might want to try a different coal like Coconara's or Chronic Hookah. They seem to work best but the two 3 kings should have worked fine as well. I would tweak your packing method a little.
Do a vortex bowl also work good with steam stones ???

what groment do you use with your vortex bowl. I figure the km's are similar to the mz so the bowl port would be the same size.
I have seen a few variations on the hole placement on some vortex bowls, some at the bottom of the spire, some at the very top and some right in the middle. Where is the best place for the holes to be on a vortex bowl?

@0mgZomg I was going to do a Nakhla how-to a while back but got side tracked with a few things. Phunnel and overpack is the best for that brand. Not sure if I may have mentioned that in this video :D

@bumbumurmum That's the first time I've heard that! I used quicklites for a long time before I got my hands on coconara's. During the first month of using coconut coals I hated them, but then one day everything just worked perfectly once I knew how to manage the heat/tobacco ratio.
I just ran out of coconaras and I'm down to these exotica silver tabs and having a little trouble with heat management, can I have some tips? I used to put 4 coconara cubes and I could do one rotation and I was fine, but these tabs are driving me up the wall on my vortex bowl. I tend to smoke mostly fumari stuff, but I'm dabbling in hookahfina and hitting new roughness on both.
Can you use charcoal screens on the vortex bowl?

What kinds of solid and liquid molecules are in hookah smoke? I'm curious because it's my understanding that the shisha doesn't burn, but I also understand that even toasting bread creates invisible smoke particles.
Whats your advice for how to pack fantasia?
@209FixedGearRider Yes, Evolution from HH is designed to smoke in a vortex actually.
@Antmanpictures On my home setup I have to use 1 Egyptian grommet and 1 Chinese slip on grommet. Even a thick Chinese should work for these.
Question Jake, does this have to be done in a Sahara Smoke Vortex? Or does it work with a Chinese/Genie Vortex? I've been having troubles perfecting this method and I'm wondering if it's because I don't have a SS Vortex.

i also bought a vortex bowl and i put 2 three kings coals and took 15-20 pulls and i barely get any smoke...so any suggestions?...i packed it lightly so the inner holes are visible

you should make a list of which shisha's work best with which bowls. also a list of which shisha's can handle more heat and which ones cant

Damn thats some nice smoke. Im still trying to get my smoke and water levels just right. I ordered some coco nara coals and a vortex bowl. I need to pack it better I keep burning the hookah and it tastes like crap after about 30 minutes.
I've been using to little ice water I think as well... burns too much with more than one coal.

I'm ordering my first Hookah in a couple days here, and I'm getting a vortex bowl with it because a friend of mine uses it as well, and from experience, it's very nice compared to the traditional ones. I don't know much about the tobaccos though. On the site I'm ordering from, it's coming with Al Tawareg and Romman I guess? I'm not too knowledgable on the different brands, I just smoked the flavors and types my friends bought hahah. Are those good for the Vortex bowl? I mean, does it really matter to specifically use certain tobacco brands for it? Or is what you explained more of a "This is what you should use, but you can use anything really" type of thing?

so i bought a razan hose and it does not fit in the hose "hole" of my 30 inch pharoah hookah...what can i do to make it fit?...the tip of my razan is too skinny and wont fit tightly...

I have a vortex bowl and you showed how many holes and such but do you mean have the first 4 bigger then the rest? And I have the same size base as your hookah and I'm not sure how much water should be put in it. I normally do halfway ish a little over halfway but someone said to put water 3/4th of the way. Is that true? And also what is the best way to clean it?
as long as the stem is underwater more than an inch or so you should be good

i exactly did this but the head only lasted me like 45 minutes -_-, can it be my water level and stuff? and also whats a diffuser do? because i know you said in a recent video you have em on all your hookahs

Hi Jake do all vortex boals fit on every single hookah out there? Because i want to buy a 6 dollar hookah from deal extreme.com and it has a phunnel bowl which is a bad thing because i like to smoke mainly fantasia and some starbuzz flavors. Also is it a good idea to put ice in the vase.

When I put it on, with any grommet it wobbles and seems like it will fall off. I have a MZ Cleopatra. My other bowls fit fine but the vortex bowl seems to be just to big for some reason, an suggestions?

In this vid u say u only rotate after the first hour when you put a new batch of coals, but in another vid I noticed u said that u rotate every 20mins. So which way is better?

I got the same bowl, i use one coal and wrap some aluminium around the bowl to preserve the heat.
