Amen Leon. First time listening to it since maybe '09. Still as good. Maybe even better, in a way, since turning back to one-hit wonder phenomenons like this almost always disappoints. This surely didn't.
This guy is so great! About 12 years ago I emailed him asking for tabs for this version. He actually replied back and typed out the entire tabs for the song. What a legend! Still come back to listen to this now and again.. Obadiah, wherever you are, I hope things have been great for you!
Similar story here! I'm 44 now, but I probably heard this first when I was just 22 or 23. I am without a doubt a repeat viewer to this recording. SO good. Obadiah, if you're watching, thanks for giving me another iconic song to whip out on the guitar. You nailed this!
I found this in college and just found my way back. After the hardest breakup and feeling lost at 36, the lyrics made me sob uncontrollably. Way too real for me. So beautiful that music is like that. This will always be one of my favorite songs, so amazing.
+Perfumaphilia This is why it kind of bothers me when people blindly write off rappers as talentless hacks just because they're not into hip hop. Sure, there's a lot of garbage out there when it comes to hip hop, but that goes for every genre. If anything, many rappers are very talented but record companies would rather have them churn out catchy tunes with crappy lyrics since it makes them money. That was actually the point Outkast was trying to make with this song, since a lot of people ending up loving it without necessarily caring about the messages it contained.
I think it is super fitting for the lyrics, because of the whole "why are we so in denial when you know we're not happy here" ...its like the upbeat happy song is disguising the true feeling behind the words, another metaphor really...but yeah, this cover reveals the emotion that was masked by the original beat
the line " why are we so in denial when we know we're not happy here?" pulls my heart every time i hear it. (he missed adding in the statement by Andre.. "ya'll don't want to hear me, you just want to dance... " which puts the whole song in perspective.
Yeah it still impresses me to think that when this song came out, everyone (including myself) thought it was a dance song with cheerful lyrics about love and happiness. Andre is a genius, and this cover is one of the best covers in music history.
He didn’t forget to add it, that line would make no sense in an acoustic cover. The whole joke of the song is that nobody actually listens to the lyrics and Andre knows this, it’s the reason andre made the song the way it is in the first place
Ghiaccio / No it’s not. The whole point of OutKast’s “hey ya” is to contrast those lyrics with an upbeat track. The contrast is symbolic of two conflicts; the inner conflict between monogamous love and sexual desire, and the external conflict between artistic expression and commercial reality. The key line being “y’all don’t wanna hear me, you just wanna dance.” From this point on in the song the lyrics cease trying to be meaningful. The singer at once abandons his hopes of finding something meaningful romantically, and of saying something meaningful lyrically. This is all lost in this stripped down version, and we’re left with nothing but gross sincerity, which, as Oscar Wilde pointed out, is a hallmark of bad poetry. Andre 3000 is a genius. Anybody that thinks that it took a chubby white hipster beta to bring the true meaning of this song out is a fool.

Robert Barlow I never said anything about Andre not making a good song. Jokes come in many different formats, and the whole point of giving the entire song an upbeat tone was because he knew it would be deceitful; hence the joke. You never refuted my point, you just wrote a lengthy comment about the obvious nature of the song to try and sound like an elitist prick, while inadvertently agreeing with me. This is a good cover of a great song. It sheds light on how depressing the song can really be. You don’t have to like something to think it’s good, so get of your high horse. Edit: it’s funny how cruelly you’re judging a man who just wanted to cover a song. You’ve never even met the guy lmao. But of course you have to automatically pull racially-charged insults and tasteless slurs out of your ass to judge a man who is probably a much better person than you. But this the internet after all Edit 2: I could go on about how you’re taking the “gross sincerity” quote severely out of context, but I’ve waisted enough brain cells tonight writing this comment

Next morning at breakfast I was about to impress the wife with my new tune. Just as I strummed the opening chord, the Outkast version came on the kitchen radio, instantly! Funny how the world works. Great cover, Obadiah Parker.

I can hardly listen to it today because the nostalgic euphoria I get from it is overwhelming. No voice can convey the writers emotions as well as this man. 13 years and I always somehow swing back to this, first song I learnt to play and I performed it with my uni roomate in front of everyone in my college as well as dedicating it to two of my teens-twenties relationships. I just wanted to say thank you for helping me and also that you did Andre proud I'm sure, and it also brought to home the contrast of my relationships to my parents. Good luck everybody and thanks for being here along with me on this journey.
I was in the Los Angeles area March 2009. I went to the Angelus Temple (a LONG story)....and listen to a guy singing 'Hey Ya'' exactly like this! Blew me away! Thank you, Mat Weddle!
“Nothing lasts forever! Then what makes love the exception? So why are we still in denial when we know we're not happy here?” Well that line hit me close to home...
The fact that Outkast hid these absolutely brutal soul crushing lyrics behind an uptempo beat is masterclass. It's another metaphor stacked on top of the song about how we cover everything with a thin veil of fake fun and happiness to hide what's really going on.
I’m here cuz I was depressed in high school and I’m still depressed as an adult lol 🖤 gotta listen like five times in a row minimum to just absorb it and all its glory! lol
This guy gives you the wake up call if you weren't awake when the original was made. Now go back to the original and notice the parts that were skipped in this cover, and it makes the original so much more impactful compared to the first time you heard it, especially with the conflict with the lyrics vs. upbeat tempo and the transition to the traditional hip-hop theme at the end. Total genius. I have to thank this cover dude for opening my eyes to this, because, full disclosure, I didn't catch it the first time around. Maybe I was too young or just not as focused on the lyrics. The lyrics call out the "listener" on it too, and people just somehow still don't notice! I would bet I wasn't the only one to miss the depth of it all the first time around.
Wow, so glad this found me again(2021). Outkast of course was amazing. Outkast’s original version is fascinating that it hides the pain with it’s upbeat sound that I shook to in all the clubs. This cover beautifully exposes that pain and gets you to lean back and think... Thank you Outkast and Mr. Parker.

+telanis9 WAS a group. Then he used it for his solo stuff. Not sure if he's still making music or not.
I very much agree. this guy nailed it
VINE IS DEAD NOOW
ZA_Survivalist Agreed!
I'm from the future. TikTok has become the monolith Vine could only dream of being
13 years and I always somehow swing back to this, first song I learnt to play and I performed it with my uni roomate in front of everyone in my college as well as dedicating it to two of my teens-twenties relationships. I just wanted to say thank you for helping me and also that you did Andre proud I'm sure, and it also brought to home the contrast of my relationships to my parents. Good luck everybody and thanks for being here along with me on this journey.
This has to be the best cover i've heard of a song ever
I don't think I will ever get over on this.
Natalia Araujo I don't think I'll ever get over you.
Hahaah damn!
+Thomas Aristy Cruz LOL
awesome
+Natalia Araujo Watch out - he is like 10 years old lol
Love this ❤still tell people about Mr.Parker...this version is just beautiful 🌬💕
My boyfriend and I are obsessed about your version, we listen to it every single time we are in the car. It’s amazing, thanks for sharing ❤
I was in the Los Angeles area March 2009. I went to the Angelus Temple (a LONG story)....and listen to a guy singing 'Hey Ya'' exactly like this! Blew me away! Thank you, Mat Weddle!
Just came back to this song after a while, my sister turned to me and said "This again?". I replied with "Always."
After all this time?
Always
motoxJack951 Snape reference
After so many years and I still love this version. ILY
“Nothing lasts forever! Then what makes love the exception? So why are we still in denial when we know we're not happy here?”
Well that line hit me close to home...
- Andre 3000
Listen to all of his lyrics. He's really an amazing lyricist. Maybe the best of all time.
@@MrEazyE357 easily one of the best ever. Not just his lyrics, but the way he structures his rhymes is so different. Truly a pioneer
hope ur okay
Quite possibly my favorite RUclips video of all time.
Parker.
13 years later I still come back to this video... lifts my soul into the sky...down to the ground
Its only 11 years since the upload but yea wonderful cover
Omg I forgot about this cover! This brings me back to so many good times. This cover is so amazing
Been coming back to this a couple times a year for almost a decade.
Damn i owe Andre 3000 sum more credit i havent truly listen to the lyrics before now
Kinda the point of the song too. "Ya'll don't wanna hear me, ya'll just wanna dance"
Listen to his part on Goodie Mob's "Black Ice". SO UNDERRATED.
@@Brokenhill42 He had the best lyrics in that "Walk It Out" tune too.
@@TruePointers I'll have to check that one out.
Been a long time, but finally back to this beautiful performance
I honestly can't tell at the very very end if he is wiping tears from his eyes or sweat from his brow. But either one is fine with me. One of the best covers to exist
Still one of my favorites. Love it.
Eleven years now. And still melting my heart...
I never realised how good the lyrics were in this song.
Covers seen and expressed through the eyes of others in different ways will always blow my mind. Thank you 🙏
Scrubs originally introduced me to this Artist and his version of “Hey Ya”. Brilliant cover and shows the depth of the original song.
You absolutely nailed this. OK so you published this in 2008 - well it's late Jan 2019 but there's a old bloke in London who thinks this is superb.
I didn't realize how beautiful this song was till he covered it this way..
This might be the best recommendation RUclips has ever given me
Feel the feelings after 16 years! Greetings from Germany! 🙂
I can't give this performance enough love
This version makes this song so much deeper
Found this when i was in high school. Still listen to it 15 years later
Chris Martin description says it was in 2006...so 13 years ago
Are you from the future or something
15 years later and I’m still here on a regular basis. So damn good.
Its been eight years since i saw this video, oh brings up old memories...
Hmm, this is the original and was uploaded 6 years ago...
Does it bring up old memories of the time you time travelled?
people like you man...
this is beautiful
Did anyone else notice how he reaches to wipe his tears at the end? Yeah, we feel the same, pal.
I still visit this from time to time. Gives me a lot of comfort.
Powerful.
