Watching this video emphasized to me just how perfectly this film was cast. As a result of how loud and intense the whole thing is, there are entire performances that get lost in the chaos in a way that isn't at all a detriment to the film, but just shows how cleverly the Safdies implement 'load bearing characters' that hold the whole experience up. Every role is masterfully depicted & delicately placed in the runtime to balance & maintain the thrill ride of the whole experience. This video, beyond the incredible analysis, was a reminder that, yeah, Idina Menzel was in this and she totally crushed it. Another great video Jai, can't wait for whatever you're cooking up next.
really glad you liked it!! Idina Menzel’s performance is staggering in this to me as well since she’s so lovely in almost every interview I came across when researching this lol. there’s a great clip of her going on Ellen being all bubbly and then it cuts to her telling Adam Sandler to die
I agree with most of your points about the larger themes of the movie, but I think you got my boy Howard all wrong. He doesn't need everyone else to lose, he's not even greedy per se, he's just a gambling addict. He lives for the feeling of putting it all on the line. Stability and safety are boring, but also frightening to him. So when he has a chance to just do the smart thing and pay the debt, he can't do it. Giving up that part of himself feels like a death to him, so he ends up another kind of death instead. The kind where you, yknow, _die._
This last time I watched it (like an hour ago) I was struck by something I hadn’t been before: Howard is CONSTANTLY APOLOGIZING AND SECOND GUESSING HIMSELF. He is fully aware his behavior is destroying him and and poisoning his family, but he just. Can’t. Stop
Oddly enough this movie reminded me of Steinbeck's "The Pearl" - like here's this pretty rock that's gonna make everything better but just ends up making everything immeasurably worse, especially for the guy who thinks it'll solve all his problems. Don't know if that's what the Safdies were thinking about, but I can't shake it.
Idk if you've watched Good Time, but the safdies have and ongoing theme of exploring tragic characters whose hubris just end up making their days go from bad to worse. I feel like they're interested in the character and want to give us a window into their worlds
Came here from the Two and A Half Men video, I've basically been binging your whole back catalog all day, and it's genuinely shocking to me that you don't have like 100k subs. You've certainly earned yourself a new subscriber.
i just watched the movie last night, and i cant stop thinking about it because for me, it shows how precious life is and how people can boast and brag about tomorrow and what they think they'll do it the future but you never know when your last day is. it also shows how selfish people can be, howard had a gf who loved him through everything, a wife that hes cheated on, and kids who don't necessarily hate him, he also had a good business but still wanted more. made it more sad and dramatic more than a thrilling movie.
Probs people who had this sad expectation going in that it would be like every other damn movie they’ve been consuming for the last ten years lmao. Lots of people like their media unchallenging and surface level. That’s how they win 🤮
I absolutely despise Adam Sandler and never thought he was funny, I never even liked the "OG classic comedies" that a lot of people make exceptions for like Billy Madison or Wedding Singer. That being said, I absolutely adore this movie, I have seen it a dozen times and it still hits the same, and Adam Sandler was absolutely phenomenal in this role, mind blowing performance.
Uncut Gems immediately shot up to my top 5 favorites of all time as soon as i saw it. I know there is a vast plethora of movies out there but this one just spoke to me. The safdies really had one of the best indie runs of the 2010s.
This movie burrowed its way into my mind and hasn't left. I love it. Such a stressful experience lol. And that beginning and ending shot is key to it, I believe. Great video.
I'm reminded of War On Everyone, which is also one of those movies the trailer lied about and then the actual movie being mind blowingly great for completely different reasons than what you expected.
I cannot explain to you the out of body experience I just had when suddenly the "Plains of Time" track from Chrono Cross starts playing in the background of this video. Such an underappreciated game and soundtrack. Maybe there's a video there about the difference between being a good piece of media and being a good sequel, and how that's effected the way Chrono Cross is (or in some cases isn't) remembered 😂 Anyway, sorry for the ramble. Love your stuff! Cheers
Found your channel today from the Two and a Half Men video, currently watching through all your content. Great stuff, keep it up! You seem to be a Safdie fan, I'd love to see your thoughts on The Curse
I can't either... The Curse really got me, though. The Oneohtrix soundtrack is haunting and the combo of Sandler, (mostly Benny) Safdie and Fielder together on The Curse pushes ALL the right people away, and pulls in the PERFECT people. For that reason, people who enjoy Uncut, The Curse, Goodtime, etc, are my favorite people, and people who have strong opinions against any of those projects (or better yet, are incapable of 'getting it') are immediately written off because they're missing something I put a lot of value in. We're All Going to the World's Fair is awesome, btw. Go easy.
I just realized that Kevin Garnett’s last name is a parallel to the gem garnet. I’m starting to think Kevin Garnett buys gems because his family name is one.
i love de blob great game great OST always lovely to hear the soundtrack just discovered your channel (from the 2 1/2 men video) great job keep up the good work
great video!!! when i first saw this in my sub feed, I immediately said to myself i had to watch uncut gems before i watched this and i did, and its a great movie definitely had some of the same thoughts presented here, how the opal rock felt like it had this tiny grain of supernaturality to it the score is definitely very important to the film, cant imagine it any other way and im so mad that they were just able to transition from the opal kaleidoscope to a colonoscopy so smoothly, it just worked really well! howard is fucked up, he deserves his fate, its a little sad though in the movie, it said that all told, it took about 18 months to get that opal i have to wonder if that opal obsession is what started his path down to being like this or maybe he was always like this? who knows…. thats just A Film Theory sorry, anyway, great video, please keep it up 🔥🔥🔥
I haven't seen this, but Hey Ya came out when I was a kid, it felt a little off but it was a bop, so I didn't care. Then, I listened to it again and wow, I just love "cognitive dissonance songs." Any song that sounds one way and the lyrics are completely contradictory, and then your brain tries to fit that round peg in a square hole
I love how these guys can come from out of nowhere and end up being the most interesting new directors at the minute with their incredibly distinctive and masterful style of making movies. It's always great when talented new directors get wide recognition. Before diamonds could be artificially created synthetically, they could not be obtained via any method other than by mining it out of the ground and that scarcity made it useful for storing and transferring wealth because it won't devalue over time. So if you create something useful, you can buy a lot of things with the gems you can get. Buying things like gems, gold, or silver is still a great way to store wealth long term because their scarcity makes them valuable and, unlike money that loses value over time due to money printing and inflation, that means your savings won't halve in value in 50 years time. That's why dimaonds are so precious and wearing something that valuable on your finger rather than using it to buy something useful is a massive flex to show off how successful and wealthy your husband is, that's why diamonds became so valuable. I guess people didn't get the memo that diamonds can be mass produced now, they're kinda pointless for storing wealth now, they're used for making drills for dentists to drill teeth so they can put in fillings, diamonds look sorta pretty I guess...
i watched uncut gems and really didn’t like it the first time i watched it. i was a fan of the sadfie brothers but i just couldn’t really get into uncut gems. but i couldn’t stop thinking about it and a month later i watched it again and i wish it had a warning attached saying “WATCH THIS FILM TWICE”
I should be thinking about this movie more these days but it just evades me. This was one of my favorite movies in 2019 alongside Parasite. I think watching this before the pandemic hit and permanently transformed my life did something. I remember the suffering in both movies, but Howard just never seemed relatable. There's dirt poor people like Parasyte everywhere I go throughout my life, it was only when I grew up that I knew all the Howards that exist and I try to avoid. Howard is one of the weirdest villains in that he's so despicable and yet we all know someone. Frail ego, infalliable, treats people like material objects. I meet them when I play trading card games, gambling addicts, landlords, city officials, etc. I want to say that like about hating someone to their face but never have the chance. But he's also someone who really only exists in the present. He's indistinguishable from a lot of people we interact with, buy also because he's someone we can't distiniguish, and a lot of peoppe who refuse to admit it
lol my mom literally walked away and stopped watching because it was giving her too much anxiety. If you’re prone to anxiety you’ll probably hate this movie.
my only issue with the movie was some of the instances where they were trying to create that atmosphere of chaotic tension were a little bit contrived: ie early on when the door to his jewelry shop wont open. Otherwise good movie and great use of Sandler
I don't know, maybe it is just Adam Sandlers, I can't look past his casting, but I just can't get investing into the praise here. Especially when all the praise is "they do this thing bad but they do it intentionally" (from mixing to how its shot).
Ma dude may i please have the name of soundtrack thats going on at 3:46 ? And since we're here can i have the rest of the playlist ? I mean omg everything is just so immaculate here taste wise. Lovely !
i'm a huge fan of twin peaks but i think i'd have to find an angle on it first that i'd feel satisfied talking about for the length of a full video. thanks for the idea though! i'd love to do one eventually.
i forgot furbies were in the film. i thought you edited them in and it was an elaborate bit several layers beyond my comprehension
When the gems are uncut 😳
😂 Not the gems being uncut 😂

me sweating profusely while searching google for a diamond-encrusted MJ nailed to a cross: this is how i win
me when i'm walking past a Uncutilated Gemhouse
This is how I win
Oddly enough this movie reminded me of Steinbeck's "The Pearl" - like here's this pretty rock that's gonna make everything better but just ends up making everything immeasurably worse, especially for the guy who thinks it'll solve all his problems. That’s brilliant. Yeah I see it now
@@robertfeldman2417 Me, brilliant? Oh you! Joking aside, I'm surprised more people didn't think of that as an influence on this movie.

same 🤝

"uncut gems is almost 4 years old"
great now I'm having a panic attack about the passage of time
Genuinely gross that there so many shit reviews from audiences when this is the best thing Adam Sandler has done in probably his entire career
Probs people who had this sad expectation going in that it would be like every other damn movie they’ve been consuming for the last ten years lmao. Lots of people like their media unchallenging and surface level. That’s how they win 🤮

I have mad respect for you because of the Persona 1 & 2 music you use now and then.
Adam Sandler wake up, new Jai just dropped.
This is really great, hope you achieve success with your channel. This and the Two And A Half Men video essays are really great video essays
OR TOBUSCUS. OH MY GOD WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE, JAI?
my name is amante and i approve this video
Excellent video but the thing I wanted to say most is you were so real for using that Raidou Kuzunoha theme at the end.
Man the Shin Megami Tensei OST just builds up your entire narrative, great video!
i watched this and your other video, and though i know you from the bunker i must say what really got me was the gran turismo 4 music. thank you
Fire video bro. Keep doing this
A new Jai vid? A Monday treat!

bruh you da same guy who did the two na half men!!
so glad that caught the algorithm man you make good work

One of my favourite movies of the last few years. Saw it screened in a cinema in London also.
Found your channel today from the Two and a Half Men video, currently watching through all your content. Great stuff, keep it up!

Appreciate your analysis
This is my favourite movie, people who don’t like it have something wrong with THEM
"Frankenstein was the monster's name" got a sub out of me. Good man.
rithm algo
I just realized that Kevin Garnett’s last name is a parallel to the gem garnet. I’m starting to think Kevin Garnett buys gems because his family name is one.
Certainly
Yes
OutKast mentioned✅
Discussion about the safdie brothers work✅
Subscribed✅
Solid video, highly underrated
oh i thought for a second that the most iconic line is when he's holding the rock and says "i'm gonna come"
i really appreciate that mankind divided edit at 3:00. adam "i asked for this" sandler
i love de blob great game great OST
always lovely to hear the soundtrack
just discovered your channel (from the 2 1/2 men video) great job keep up the good work
I first watched Uncut Gems as a teenager with my brother. The moment I saw the Furby chain I knew I had to have it.
all i knew about this movie was "im so sad im so fucked up" that clip would flash into my head whenever i felt like shit lmao
Just found your channel and bingin all your videos. Quality stuff man, cant wait to see what you make next!
I was on board and then you brought out fucking Falconhoof? My man
Almost a perfect movie that did not stick the landing like most of Sadfie brothers projects.
What do you mean
i concur!
An absolute masterpiece
great video!!! when i first saw this in my sub feed, I immediately said to myself i had to watch uncut gems before i watched this
and i did, and its a great movie
definitely had some of the same thoughts presented here, how the opal rock felt like it had this tiny grain of supernaturality to it
the score is definitely very important to the film, cant imagine it any other way
and im so mad that they were just able to transition from the opal kaleidoscope to a colonoscopy so smoothly, it just worked really well!
howard is fucked up, he deserves his fate, its a little sad though
in the movie, it said that all told, it took about 18 months to get that opal
i have to wonder if that opal obsession is what started his path down to being like this
or maybe he was always like this?
who knows….
thats just A Film Theory
sorry, anyway, great video, please keep it up 🔥🔥🔥
I haven't seen this, but Hey Ya came out when I was a kid, it felt a little off but it was a bop, so I didn't care. Then, I listened to it again and wow, I just love "cognitive dissonance songs." between the obsession over items causing people's downfall and the die twice quote, I was kinda waiting to see if you'd bring up Borges.
I'm just here for the BOF 3 jams in the background. Love it
I love how these guys can come from out of nowhere and end up being the most interesting new directors at the minute with their incredibly distinctive and masterful style of making movies. It's always great when talented new directors get wide recognition.

Oddjob truly is how one wins GoldenEye multiplayer
The heavy zoom on Ellen when saying "they're horrible people" had me dead.
❗️lets go!!
3:27 Ayyyyyyyyyy Breath of Fire 3 overworld music! I LOVE that track!
how does this video have less than 2k views ?? its so perfect and funny
bro you deserve a million subscribers holyshit
10:42 trax jump scare
Uncut Gems is a movie I watch to remind myself that, in this fucking life, nothing matters
Ok I had to look it up but his eyes legit do shrink when he looks at the opal for the first time. What th. Why did they do that.
I love that movie and want more of it. A lot of people are not too smart and have poor taste. You looked into this way too deeply through lol.
21:28 Isn’t this the plot of Pixar’s Coco?
5:55 Nice Chrono Cross music 😎
rolling down the strip on vogues
I enjoyed how Sandler put loan sharking and gambling addiction on blastoscar caliber performance
i watched uncut gems and really didn’t like it the first time i watched it. i was a fan of the sadfie brothers but i just couldn’t really get into uncut gems. but i couldn’t stop thinking about it and a month later i watched it again and i wish it had a warning attached saying “WATCH THIS FILM TWICE”

Wait...the universe got destroyed in Akira? I've only seen the anime, which seems to be the manga held together by glue and duct tape.
you are cool! I don't really like movies, but you are cool
thank you! give movies another shot, you might like them this time round
imo movies are pretty good
lol my mom literally walked away and stopped watching because it was giving her too much anxiety. If you’re prone to anxiety you’ll probably hate this movie.
Best DVD I bought ngl
Nah sorry but you’re wrong..
Kevin Garnetts NBA career peaked in 2008.
cut this.
my only issue with the movie was some of the instances where they were trying to create that atmosphere of chaotic tension were a little bit contrived: ie early on when the door to his jewelry shop wont open. Otherwise good movie and great use of Sandler
Keep the good work going 👍
Yoooo the breath of fire music 😍
5:44 To me, that's cinema.
eunnekhautt dgzemeisz
I hate it when people confuse my Mogwai for a fkn Furby.
The most iconic line is actually " I'm so sad I'm so fucked up "
That ending was great haha
And god i need to rewatch this movie now
based persona 2 bgm
Uncut gems when cut minerals show up: 💀
Got a sub for using the breath of Fire overworld theme
Can you please put a list of the music you use somewhere? These tracks are good
I don't know, maybe it is just Adam Sandlers, I can't look past his casting, but I just can't get investing into the praise here. Especially when all the praise is "they do this thing bad but they do it intentionally" (from mixing to how its shot).
Is track playing around the 19:00 mark from SMTIV?
ATL-iens
Good video
wait Howard Ratner was jewish? wtf how did i miss that
bro he’s a jewelry seller in new york how did you not get that or am i missing the joke
Pretty sure they make it clear while he’s with his extended family
I wouldnt be surprised if the title has a double meaning referring to what most Jews do to their willies.
I bet the movie's title has a double meaning/metaphor to what that community does with foreskins
18:57 Adam looking like Adam Jensen just like the Deus ex reference at 3:00
Ma dude may i please have the name of soundtrack thats going on at 3:46 ? And since we're here can i have the rest of the playlist ? I mean omg everything is just so immaculate here taste wise. Lovely !
Untuc gebs
At-liens was said ironically right
❤
When we getting a twin peaks vid please?
i'm a huge fan of twin peaks but i think i'd have to find an angle on it first that i'd feel satisfied talking about for the length of a full video. thanks for the idea though! i'd love to do one eventually.
I'm a freak
