Rat Rod Door Panels For Your 4x4! Low Buck Diesel Truck Episode 16. Bead Rolling Basics
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Rat Rod door panels are a great starter bead rolling project. Today I attempt to sharpen a skill and use our Eastwood bead roller to make some cool artwork in our Jeep Truck's interior. I'm starting with smaller projects like door panels and kick panels with the intention of building pieces like the dash. But like all beginner sheet metal fabricators I need to put in the hours and build these skills. Enjoy the video and stay creative!

I don't have a 4 wheeler, I don't build anything, but love to watch this channel and see how things are built and work.
Thanks man! I'm happy to have you aboard🤘
I watch your channel so I can live vicariously through you. I don't have the tools, money, skills or garage to do what you do.
I’m a muscle car guy. Both my sons and my wife all have Jeeps. I don’t know much about off roading. I’ve been watching this channel and learning a lot.
Next time you are anywhere close to Atlanta give me a shout and we can go wheeling
I'm not sure why this wasn't in my sub box but ok.
I'm really digging this new recording style. The talking while working and white board explaining
Thanks man! I'm glad somebody noticed lol
Dude you should know that most of us absolutely love fabricator Nate
I dont even offroad i just like the fabwork! Hello from tacoma.
Thanks!
I like that your not afraid to try new things. Make it a little less scary for me to think I could try something like this.
Nate,Ron Covell has a fabulous DVD, demonstrating bead roller techniques(he has MANY DVD's, covering various aspects of fabrication). He is a master fabricator,& excellent instructor...just in case you're unaware of him.
Thanks for your video,outstanding...as per usual!
Glad I found your channel! I just acquired a ‘79 J10 and although I’m not new to Jeeps, I am new to older Jeeps. Seeing you work on your truck kinda helps motivate me. Thanks!
You are doing a grand job here with your channel and building a community of like mind craftsmen. Thanks
"custom window roller - upper " lol I love this channel so much
What about making a soft strap for the door pull out of some webbing or like an old leather belt?
It's not out of the question. I prefer to make stuff out of metal but a peice of cloth or leather did cross my mind 🤘
Find the theme of the truck and work from there....
This is what I was thinking. Something soft that you could mount under the window but not be annoying when hanging your arm out.
Still my favorite build. Keep it rolling. Thanks for all you do. Videos are top notch.
Thanks buddy 👍
A trick I've done for making a tricky door panel is to use lexan or plexiglass to template the holes or whatever you need. And you can save for later.
I think the door panel looks good. It fits your style and fits the truck, thanks for sharing!
I love it!!
Here's an idea though, I hope you like....
The upper crosshatched panel and the lower panel that's dimple-died,.... Take those and stain them with something darker. Like soak then in cloths dye. Or some chemical process that darkens them. I think the contrast against the main door panel would look great. Heck, is nothing else, give them a light coat of flat black, and a top coat of urethane to protect it.
Rock on brother!
Best video yet. I like watching your trouble shooting process.
@12:19 only the guy that made it will see the imperfections. For me that is a work of art!
For a blind spot you knocked it out of the park. Great video.
"The window roller upper"
Gonna have to be the new name for the traditional "Window Crank" ;-)
Just a suggestion. The diamond rolled section would look much cleaner if you cut out the main door panel skin and mounted the diamond section with the flange behind the the door panel skin so you could only see the diamonds and not the flange area. Awesome channel and content.
Agree
Sound deadened my entire 4runner and the stuff works great. Also, the experimental piece looked amazing! lol
I used kill mat on my 86 4runner and it turned the door from a steel drum into a gentle this. Huge improvement. If you have a shit box it's money well spent.
It’s great watching your videos as I am making some of the same type projects. Have started the truck rack having stolen 75% of your ideas. No tent tho, need to put the canoe up. Door panels like yours for my wrangler out of diamond plate. Much more confident to try after watching your how-to’s. Thanks for the encouragement. Rock on.
Nate- One small criticism. That’s a top flight bead roller. Make sure guys out there know there are much cheaper, manual rollers that they can buy for short money.
I'm constantly inspired by you Nate! Started putting down MIG beads last week after lots of delays based on stupid fear.
Right on! I'm pumped to see comments like these! You got this man, enjoy learning this new skill set 🤘
After I drill the hole for the rivnut I use a small file and file a divot in the edge. When the rivnut expands it will lock itself in the hole when it expands into the divot. I have had good luck using that method. Also another great fab video. Your fab videos are your best IMO.
Over the top ✔
Aluminum ✔
Dimple dies ✔
Fancy tools ✔
Riv Nuts ✔
Checked every box for a nate build except the tig welding
Built door panels out of Alu for a 1956/57 Thames panel truck Just try and find those LOL! Good Job Nate!
Spray some WD-40 on aluminum and use a flat sander same direction. creates brushed look.
p.s. on riv-nut there is a product called np-1 or mp-1 comes in caulking tube. takes week to cure fully, usable in few hours. make sure its warm before you use it. hands and caulking gun will thank you.
You truly have a passion for your trade. Your videos are out of this world, love the way you explain things.
Love the content man for a future project maybe do some topographic map lines with your bead roller keep the killer stuff coming
I used kilmat on the generator enclosure on my toy hauler. Worked great.
Always love a J10 video!!
Once I saw the iconic one of a kind Dimple Die's I just knew it has to the Jedi Master himself. AKA godfather of Dirt Lifestyle's.
Thank you for another great video, a video that leaves you wanting more. Hmmm now I need the Eastwood line of garage DIY toy's/my bad... Tools just because they kick as....
I might need some how to do classes by Nate. I still want that truck rack.
Lol thanks man 🤣
@@DirtLifestyle you should look into a paid membership for how to / one on one classes with Nate, the classes alone would be worth pay for. That or a raffle - winner gets to send their project build to you for some mods... Love the work, and for a IT geek it's painful to watch, just the other day I found myself looking into Welding School.
Glad you are working on the Gladiator again. Been working on our '76 J-20. So familiar. Doing floor panels right now. Our panels are still in tact. But I'll take that original door handle, lol.
Love the look of the door panels quite beating your self up you do a good job
Thanks buddy 👊
Take a some scotch brite pads . I use the red an scrub your door panel going the same direction . It will give it a brushed look then shoot it with some clearcoat
Yeah Nate it's awesome way to do something 🙂 always a thumbs up for you before
I see the video
🤘 thanks buddy
Man of good taste , good craftman and a good teacher love your videos man cheers
Man that is so cool that you went completely out of the box with the door panels. My originals on my J2000 are badly warped and have tried everything to save them . Just as you said no after market parts are available and upholstery shops charge just as much as a door replacement on one of these trucks if I good one can be found now days. You have gave me a whole new thought on trying to fill one of the missing pieces inside one of my trucks. Can't wait till you get yours trail worthy and see how it performs with the binz diesel. Great video enjoyed every minute had to watch it over just to see if I missed anything.
Looks good brother 👍
I just picked up all the metal to build my overland camper to pull behind the Ol' XJ. Thanks again for all you do for the fabrication community.
Nice! I should be starting mine soon as well 👍
@@DirtLifestyle O by the way, my 64yr old mom now has me looking for her a Jeep like your blue truck. When she saw yours, she got all excited and said that's the style Jeep she's been wanting. Evidently there's a cooking show on PBS that has a yellow one with a flatbed set up with an overland style pull out kitchen built in the side of the bed, it's called Annabelle. I've never seen her get that excited about a vehicle before. She'll be watching your build on it & said she can't wait to see how it looks when you're done with it.
@@TheBibleExplorer that is awesome man! They are still out there if you hunt around 👍
Panel looks good. If be proud of it if it were mine.
I also love that old truck. I would love to have an old J20 like that
Another great video, content is perfect, diy/low budget/ creative.
Awesome! Thanks Nate!
Before I even watch it I'll give a thumbs up for seeing rat rod in the title. You asked us when you had only 3-4k subs what project would we want to see you do. My reply was "rat rod rock crawler!" This truck is going to be next level artistry if you maintain the rat concept.
Lol thanks! I've always been a fan of the rat rod look 👍
Nice work Nate! Making me want to get my hands on a roller to start messing around with... haha 🤙
Clear that aluminum quick! Haha nice work
Love the door panels
Looks good Nate. For cheap sound deadening, Lowes Peel and Seal rolls work great. I have it in both my rig and my F100. I really need a beader and dimples..
You're the man! Inspirational, know how to talk and keep people entertained. I've learned a lot. If I could come hang out for a week and learn some things, that would be a great experience.
Looks good! IF it were mine, I'd paint the back panel black... or blue including under the dimple dies.
One thing I saw Make It Kustom do to fasten panels to steel or aluminum to steel, is make these small holes in places that a rivet would be and do tac welds in them with a mig welder. He has these pins to hold a panel in place on the borders as he tac welds everything; he pre drills these small holes, and there's a hand tool that puts the pin in the hole and when you release the handle, the pin holds in place until you get it all in place and start tac welding. He does some pretty legit stuff. anyway, sorry for blowing up your comments section, brother. Just thought it might be of interest to you.
Great job Nate keep up the awesome work! Even if you don't paint the panel you might try painting the void behind the dimple die panel in an accent color I think that would look awesome
Thinking same. Doing it body colour would give a nice contrast
I used that brand of sound deadening in my 1977 c10! It works great. True duel axle dumps and I can talk in the cab in a normal voice lol
Love your channel. Quick tip, when using the band saw keep your upper blade guide as close as possible to the work. You will get a much cleaner cut with less blade wander.
Love your content recently purchased a 03 TJ as a project car and I’m almost done swapping the transmission and then I’ll have a running driving rig and I always watch your videos for ideas and motivation amazing channel
Nice! Good luck with the new toy 👍
@dirtlifestyle. If is was easy Nate everybody would be doing it. Your 100% correct we do this because we like building stuff. Nice Bead rolling by the way.
Thanks!
You could paint either the kick panel, or behind it the same colour as the truck. that could be cool
Awesome work man thank you for taking your time to make content for us
Thank you for watching! I appreciate you taking the time to write a positive comment 👍
Awesome cool 😎 stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Looks great Nate.
Every time I watch you work on this truck it makes me want to get a Jeep truck vs a Jeep TJ and build a cool truck like yours.
Nice job... you can also use a scotch pad on a drill and make a "engine turn " pattern... always been a big fan of that model pickup... just tossing out a suggestion... something totally different. Convert it to a dually... it would be one of a kind... atleast as far as I know. Just something different and unique. Which is right up your alley... As always keep up the great programs and always looking forward to seeing what's next.
Lol i looked into it. I have seens some 60s dually jeep trucks that would be a cool bed donor. Im just not there yet lol
Very cool.... get the torch and the old Dodge dually trucks had interesting fenders on the back... nothing a crack fabrication guy like you can't handle.... ahh just kidding around...but it would be a cool thing... enjoy your programs and channel, thanks for the reply.
Another great video Nate!
Interested in this truck and where it's going cant wait to see what it looks like later on
You can use tow strap loops for door handles nice and not expensive
Thanks for the inspiration! Going to the shop now!
Nice!
love when he does videos like this.
Great video man, loving the passion to learn new things. That door panel looks great, wish I had the time to do stuff like this.
Thanks!
Would love to see updates on the truck. Re-
watching the whole series to get inspiration for my own build coming up soon.
your work is so creative
Thank you!
I think a beaten leather pull tab would look good for a door pull or even a door latch
i think it looks great. you could add some padded black vinyl under the lower beauty panel to match the seats and give the panel another layer of texture.
I'm loving this truck. Been a long time since we saw the Low buck Truck.
Loved the post
Great series, hope to see more work on this in the future!
Finally! Back to my favorite build. Excellent work with those bead rolls, even for a beginner. 👍
Thank you, Nate.
Cool idea Nate. That truck is going to be bad a$$
You're so blessed you have some great stuff like that to build your rig. I wish to have that though to build my rig
Leather strap door grab for closing. Could use aluminum to make the hold down ends. Well oiled old belt about 2" wide. Image search for leather trunk (and yeah truNk not truck) handles will give lots of ideas.
Loving the builds and content. Gathering components now for a v8 swap and 1tones in my JKU
I bought some cheap abs panels off bjsoffroad as a temporary solution for my 73 Jeep truck. I want to build something similar to add to the interior and you’ve given me some great ideas. Also, I used that same kilmat sound deadening stuff and it made a world of difference. Love the videos on the low buck diesel truck. Keep them coming!
I like it, Nate. Very good idea, and I wish I'd thought of it, and had the tools to have done that when I owned an Full-Size.
you would like "Make It Kustom", he does the diamond pattern, and he uses a similar die set to do it, but he made his bead roller from an Harbor Freight Beed Roller. It has a 36" depth and remade it with 1/4" steel, and he shows some techniques on doing the diamond or quilted pattern that might help. Anyway.
Dude, your bad Ass.! Nice work with the aluminum panels.!
Nice work 👍
If you think your riv-nuts are going to spin don’t rely on some crappy glue - go ahead and put a tack weld them and then grind it down a bit - if you don’t have a welder well I guess you’re just hosed
When buying anti-seize go the extra bit and get the marine grade as it’s not water-soluble
Hey man I like your trick with the rivnuts using that loctite, but incase you forget it next time you do it I got a trick that has worked for me. After you drill yor hole for the rivnut take a small round jewelers file and make a notch in the hole. When you expand the rivnut with your tool it will form into that notch keeping it from spinning. Hope this helps ya.
Your passion for getting out there and making something is contagious. I usually only have time to work on stuff during the weekend, so I'm itching to work on more projects. Currently working on swapping some projector headlights into my 4runner
Can’t wait to see your next video for the J10, we just got our 1980 J10 complete body for a full build as a family. Super cool to see your ideas.
My kids have been debating how we’re gunna do ours, they’ve agreed on a diesel/manual/4x4/3 seater/and a beautiful custom blue.
Use a strap to close the door, can likely find a nice bolt on towstrap for cheap
Great stuff!👍
Retro is what came to mind. Your going to need plaid seat covers to tie it all together LOL
I have been trying to talk myself into building another foundry to start casting aluminum again, custom door handles, shifter knobs, etc. But it is a ton of work and I have about 90 big projects already!
Good job man
It’s cool that you are building it before you are awesome at it. I can’t wait until you make the next door panels for it. I bet you will make a few new and modified ones over the next few years. 👍🏻👍🏻
Nate if you painted the beauty panels in the right way would look pretty cool like a leather look.
One thing to consider the stock panels could be used as templates to cut out a more to fit size. If you don't have panels you could probably get them at a junkyard pretty cheap.
I'm making panels for my Jeep YJ doors I'm using the existing cardboard panels for templates it cuts time on having to measure out holes for window knobs and door handles.
If you can't buy it, build it!
Can't wait for content on the *******...on 43s!
Huh? Liberty on 43s? Wtf are you talking about?
@@dwizl7213 Lol...it's a Patreon thing!
Shhhhhhhh lol. This is supposed to be a secret until I make a video
Looks good. Great small project for any truck.
Wood blades for cutting aluminum thats a new one iv never heard ill have to try that thanks for cool tip
Finally yall! Me and my daughter have been waiting for days!
Lol I'm honored 😁
