Tbh I disagree. I think a sequel dilutes the original. You introduce another game associated with the same name. Just look at Dark Souls. Yes, most everyone agrees Dark Souls 1 is probably the best out of the series, and if nothing else, left a huge mark on the industry few games will ever have the privilege of leaving. But inevitably, conversation of Dark Souls 1 will eventually lead to conversation of Dark Souls 2 and 3, and the trilogy as a whole. It's suddenly not just Dark Souls 1 anymore, it's the Dark Souls trilogy. Even if Bloodborne 2 comes out as awesome or even better than Bloodborne 1, the original Bloodborne is now diluted with being tied to another game. I think the greatness of Bloodborne will shine more brightly in the far future if it's allowed to shine on its own. Let FROM make new IP's.

Yea no a series can only shine when there are others to compare it to, you wouldn’t be able to say dark souls was the best out of the series until dark souls 2 came around, and if you really think that a second bloodborne game will dilute the series for you don’t play it it’s really that simple

The gameplay of Bloodborne makes me want a sequel, but the lore makes me want them to never touch it again. The game has the most detailed, perfect lore I have ever seen in any game ever, actually, make that any piece of fiction ever, I'm not even fucking kidding. 95% of players kill every boss and finish the game without ever knowing what's going on, but if you put in the time to figure out everything it is absolutely mind blowing.

Because, whether you like it or not, once a game gets a sequel and is highly successful, it goes down a road that leads to something it isn't.
Want an example? Sure: Halo. What happened to that? It lasted too long, and not only fell into the wrong hands, but became an utter shitshow.
Oh, also a whether you like it or not, Dark Souls III divided the community a little more so than DkS2, so we can gather from that, at... Dark Souls was about to go down the same road Halo did.
Also can you name 10 games that has 4 sequels and hasn't starting going off and being suicidal?

I know I’m 4 years late to the conversation but seeing as there is still no BB2, I would like to offer my two cents that will probably reach no one.
Your main argument is that From Studios should not make a sequel as the game was amazing and there is a high chance that a sequel won’t live up to the original. I also saw you left a comment in regards to the lore being eloquent and something that shouldn’t be tarnished.
I disagree with your stances solely because you are assuming that the failure of a sequel will in some way affect the original. There are plenty of pieces of media that can still be appreciated even if future additions were terrible. Take Star Wars, Star Trek, the COD franchise, the battlefield franchise, the mass effect franchise, and so many more. In all of these situations, future additions to the franchise have not been as amazing as the original media, but no one looks back negatively on the original because of the flaws of the sequels. If I don’t like BB2, I’m more than willing to pretend it didn’t happen, as would most people.
Your argument is flawed and it doesn’t really hold up as an argument for why a sequel should not happen. Worst case scenario, it sucks. But best case scenario, it’s as good or even better than the original. If it sucks there are practically no consequences (unless you work for From or you preordered it, which is another problem in of itself). If it succeeds, we all get another game that we can love and enjoy.

    • @serene-illusion
      @serene-illusion 2 года назад +2

Funnily enough, Dark Souls 2 was an underwhelming sequel to the masterpiece that was Dark Souls 1. As much as people shit on or defend DS2, nobody looks negatively at DS1 because of it. I will say because of what happened with DS2, the Dark Souls series DESPERATELY needed another entry to save it, but even Bamco wasn't sure if they'd risk it. Thankfully we had Miyazaki return for DS3, and wrapped a nice bow to give a final farewell to the series.
What I will say, however, is that I'm not sure if I'd ever want a Bloodborne 2 that isn't developed by FromSoft. A Soulsborne game without FromSoft is just a Souls-like, like if Dark Souls 4 was made by Bamco and not FromSoft themselves. I have no clue what Bluepoint is capable of in terms of making things that aren't just graphical enhancements of pre-existing games, or if they're capable of creating a solid sequel to one of the greatest games of all time. Would it just be another game added to the pile of Souls-likes? FromSoft has shown for the past decade that they're pretty much the only ones at the top in terms of quality and feel when it comes to the genre, so can Bluepoint compete?
Only time will tell if the rumors are true, and we'll only know if Bloodborne 2 is any good if it comes out. If you ask me, I'm very doubtful about this

Respectfully disagree. First you bring up the example of resident evil. This comparison is flawed imo and I'll explain why. The resident evil games were all published by capcom. As a publisher it's their job to maximise profit as a priority which is what lead to the ridiculous number of spin offs for that series. Also, the RE series has had multiple directors at the helm. After RE4 new directors were brought on and the creators of the series were no longer working on it. The vision was lost and this correlated with the growing displeasure of the fan base with RE5 and 6.
When it comes to souls games however from software has had the creator at the helm for every game apart from DS2, and with the fact that DS2 is the most disliked game in the series I think this exposes what truly goes wrong with long running 'niche' franchises.
Would you argue that Nintendo should stop making Mario games because you're scared they'll become stale? If so most would disagree because Miyamoto and Nintendo understands what makes those games great.
You're entitled to your opinion of course, but to lack faith in a creator who has proven on 4 occasions that he can make games that engross and captivate players is what I would call ignorant. Personally I support Miyazakis vision and whatever direction that takes, and I believe FromSoft and Sony do too.

Mitch L thanks for the reply. Don't think I suggested anywhere in my comment that you thought Miyazaki should stop making games though. I'm disagreeing with your point that bloodborne should not have a sequel. I believe it should if Miyazaki feels like taking on that challenge. As a society we don't say a certain director should stop making a certain style of film. As gamers we tend to adopt ownership of franchises because of their interactive nature but I don't feel that gives us the right to call what should and shouldn't happen. That decision should be left to the creator.

LoCi I think the main concern is “Where do you go from here?”. Bloodborne is in my eyes, a complete project. How does one add on to it? Dark Souls sequels while having slight differences in terms of weapons, characters, areas, and game mechanics all have essentially the exact same premise. You end up doing the same thing in the end. Nothing insanely new is added on that front, except for a couple of cool new lore bits here and there. I’m fine with that, because I was never a big fan of Dark Souls story to begin with. I didn’t DISLIKE it, it just didn’t hit any cylinders for me. Bloodborne I feel is very different in that regard, where the lore is a MAJOR component of the game in terms of importance, instead of a small side piece. Maybe because it’s just more interesting/intricate to me, I don’t know. I don’t see how you can make a Bloodborne 2 without it seeming like a rehash of the original. DIFFERENT Great Ones? DIFFERENT factions trying to obtain their power? DIFFERENT alternate realities? I feel like since story is a much larger part of Bloodborne, and the story’s been told, there shouldn’t be a sequel. That being said, I would totally play the hell out of it.

Dark Souls 3 is and should be the end of the Dark Souls series. However, I think Bloodborne is proof that they should not abandon the Souls formula altogether. Make a new IP each time with some minor and some major mechanical changes while still playing relatively the same as the Souls games. But this shouldn't be done too often. They're working on another right now; whether it's Bloodborne 2 or something different is debatable, but after it they should stay away from the Souls formula for at least a few years. When they come back to it, whatever they come up with will be fresh and the passion will be back with a vengeance, almost guaranteeing it'll be a great game. Plus, working on other stuff will give them the chance to possibly strike gold again with a new formula.

I totally respect your opinion, I see where you're coming from and I mysel am not a fan of sequels, but at the same time I can't deny that I LOVED the shit out of some sequels.
Dragon Age 2 is my favourite in the series despite its abysmal flaws, Final Fantasy X-2 is almost insulting when it comes to shift in tone and portrayal of characters from the original, but the combat system is easily one of the best in the series. Devil May Cry 3 is, once again, my favourite from said franchise and so is Kingdom Hearts 2. None of these titles 'tainted' in any way the beauty of the original game. The mindset that sequels 'ruin' the original is pretty childish in my eyes.
And Bloodborne is the game that restored my faith in gaming. I need another
one. Or at least a spiritual successor like DS was for DeS. The lore and
characters are too good to let them go. Heck, I played DS3 because I wanted MORE BLOODBORNE! XD

I agree with your point that making another original game would be heaps better than a half-assed sequel but I can't help but want a continuation of the bloodborne story line as well as see what from software can do with the original mechanics. The rally system alone was brilliant. It forced players to take risks and promote aggressive gameplay. Transforming weapons were by far the greatest innovation to the souls series. That mechanic alone allowed for a huge range of play styles (rakuyo anyone?) and brought sword fighting to a whole new level. But obviously the game wasn't perfect. PVP was a joke. Only a handful of available areas to invade and a network connection that makes me want to rip my eyes out and stick my head in a bucket of lye. Yeah it had issues. But these are things that can be addressed and fixed if a sequel ever is released. I would love a new game with all the good bits of Bloodborne and fixing the bad but having that in a new title just sounds lazy to me. I'm looking forward to what from software creates in the next few years and I hope it lives up to the dark souls fanboys' expectations. I just hope we haven't seen the last of yharnam.

      Jz6x6
Bloodborne isn't a perfect game, it is without question the best game in the souls series but there are still many things that could be improved in a sequel.
      1. Bloodborne's pvp isn't necessarily bad, it's just very unbalanced in favor of bloodtinge builds, and parry spamming, has little to no consequence in PvP. Perhaps in a bloodborne sequel missing a parry could be punishable. There are also imbalances between host and invader, so perhaps BB2 could add a duel mode, to make pvp specific matchmaking easier. In this mode both the host and invader have clamped and equally distributed stats, so neither one has an advantage.
      2. CO-OP is probably the weakest part of this game. Not only does co-op make PvE too easy, it's also incredibly difficult to summon people and consistently co-op without having to constantly resummon. Especially in chalice dungeons where you have to resummon every layer. The co-op system can definitely be improved upon. CO-op gameplay should have no level restrictions but the game should be more difficult in co-op mode, similar to how Nioh handles co-op. Players should be able to co-op the entire game without having to be resummoned.
      3. Chalice Dungeons can often be repetitive and are mostly played for blood gem grinding. There were some very impressive bosses in the chalice dungeons, watchdog of the old lords, bloodletting beast, pthumerian elder etc... but there is not much to desire with dungeons themselves. These chalice dungeons could have been a good platform for co-op gameplay, and could have had more depth and variety rather than being a small selection of the same rooms.
      4. A bloodborne sequel could include all of the weapons from Bloodborne, with updated movesets, plus a new selection of trick weapons and Hunter tools to choose from.
      5. Bloodborne is very replayable, but isn't a very long game, after beating Vicar Amelia, the rest of the main in game bosses are basically fought back to back.
      - Shadows of Yharnam and Rom.
      - One reborn and darkbeast.
      - Micolash and Wet Nurse.
A newer bloodborne game could perhaps add more secret bosses, more bosses in general and expand upon the locations so multiple bosses are not fought in the same area. That would give some extra length to the game.
From a gameplay perspective, bloodborne definitely can be improved. It only needs to do the same thing, but bigger and better, with as Much dedication as dark souls and improve upon the inconsistencies.
There has unfortunately been only one expansion for Bloodborne which is a shame.
If not a sequel, I definitely want to see another bloodborne expansion.
Edit: Bloodborne's existing expansion already proved what the devs are capable in terms of boss design. The living failures were hit and miss, but there should be more bosses with the quality of Orphan, Lawrence and especially Maria and Ludwig.
Bloodborne had some weak boss designs like Witches of Hemwick, Celestial Emissary and Micolash. Bloodborne 2 could improve upon the boss design and create new bosses with the quality of the dlc ones. DS3 had many impressive bosses in ringed city, like Darkeater Midir and Slave Knight Gael. So there is definitely foundation for improvement.

I ONLY believe there should be a sequel to any souls game if Miyazaki wants to make it. If he wants to do a sequel of one of his games, I believe it could really come out as a quality game. I believe that Dark Souls 3 could have been really good if Miyazaki really wanted to do it. However, if Miyazaki doesn't want to do a sequel, it won't be as good.. It will be another DS3 that focuses mostly on fan service and rehashed content.

IDK if he wanted to do it or not but regardless of what he wanted he delivered. DS3 as far as lore goes greatly expands the IP and while there were a few problems with the game it still held it's own. That being said if Miyazaki was looking to wrap up the DS series he totally did that with the Ashes and the Ringed City DLC. When all of the lore is placed in front of you from the DLC it provides a satisfactory yet open ended ending to the series and yet it still leaves you wanting just a little bit more from the series be it bosses, lore, or answers to the questions you still have.

Bloodborne really make its mark (pyn intended) with the use of cosmic horror & when using that there should be enough context to explain certain things there should be largely unanswered bigger questions that cause speculation & theory's. Cuz if you explain it all that's not cosmic horror. Bloodborne has the right balance of context & unanswered questions, The Old Hunters is a great dlc but nothing else after that should made.

The issue with Dark Souls having sequels is that DS was just a slow and worse version of Demon's Souls to begin with. Going back and playing DS1 is so meh after playing Bloodborne because of Bloodbornes overwhelming game play. Dark Souls weapons pretty much all work exactly the same. They swing side to side or up and down with barely any variation and R1 is the king. In Bloodborne you can actually create combos of R1's,R2's,L1's, and L2's.

I'll say this to you if you want fresh go check out Nioh, I freaking love Nioh yes it is kind of a Dark Souls clone but it's original enough in terms of gameplay and mechanics to truly shine on it's own. It has a DS difficulty with a Diablo dungeon crawling feel to it. The builds you can do in-game are more overlappable than with DS so you can specialize in one thing but generalize enough in the others so you have options. I will say this though the enemy types are limited but the bosses are widely varied. just my thoughts

I profoundly believe that bb2 should come to fruition, ONLY if the team working on it is as creative and passionate as the first time around. Though there was much public pressure, it’s very obvious that ds2 had people who were involved with what they were doing. Ds2 has some of the most expansive lore in the series, and aside from a huge gamble with the combat system, ds2 is fun to explore and play. I want Bloodborne 2, but not if it’s going to be another dark souls 3 pre-dlc. I want mostly entirely original content

I think it all hinges on Myuzaki's interest in the project. If he is passionate about what he's creating, it'll probably be as good as Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne, which were all very close to him. Dark souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 really only happened because Bando Namcai knew that the games were well made with a loyal and growing fan base which they could cash in on. I think that if Hidetaka Myuzaki is excitedly and happily making Bloodborne 2, I would be passing out with excitement. If he's being whipped into making Bloodborne 2 by SONY as he tries to call his family to tell them that he's being held captive and being forced into making a game that he hates, I'd expect something along the lines of Dark Souls 3 and temper my hype.

I kind of disagree solely on the basis that ds2 demonstrated to me that while sequels can be very mechanically weak compared to the original when we are talking about From, they can still go in fascinating directions. I love 2 because it actually had the guts to go in radical directions from the original from a lore and story stance,. Ds3 is just a souless copy of ds1 that while pretty, plays it totally safe (although the ringed city seems to finally be innovating) but from did prove with 2 that they are capable to expanding on their lore in interesting ways even if they were not planned from the beginning

When my friend that's really into the souls series demanded that I try it out, I picked Bloodborne over DS3 because I was unfamiliar with the Dark Souls lore/story, and because Bloodborne was only $20 while DS3 was full price and I didn't want to waste money if I found that the challenging gameplay didn't agree with me. I will admit, the first time I tried it I quit after the first few hours and forgot about it until after I graduated. It's been a week since I picked it up again and I can't be more happy that I did. This game was a hidden gem in the RPG genre that absolutely swept me off my feet and showed me what I had always been searching for in vain in other RPGs. From Software is wise to make another original IP, because it's clear that when they do they create something of true quality and unique character, and the gaming industry needs that more than ever in an age when almost nothing in gaming is original and everything is either a sequel, a resurrection to a series past its prime, or another copy paste open world survival, team shooter or "indie platformer."

  • @Americanowithcream
    @Americanowithcream 7 лет назад +6

Basically what your saying is (I think) that new ips allow from soft to be as creative and free with their game design, where as a sequel is a very similar game, with graphical enhancements, new bosses, story and content. Bloodborne is BY FAR my favourite game EVER. To see a sequel is my dream, the characters, mysterious story, bosses and famous dark gritty visuals just compliment each other so well. Because of this, I instinctively want a sequel, if it were your favourite game you would too right? But I can see your point, the freedom they got with bloodborne was what made it so unique. Often the original is the best, my question is, would you be displeased if there were a sequel? After watching this video and giving some thought (not while dreaming) I am questioning whether I really would like a sequel. I would probably be happiest if they created a new IP set in Bloodborne's universe, with plenty of references and perhaps even a character camio. In my opinion, a sequel is inevitable, whether it is under the title Bloodborne 2, this year or not.

His next game will also be something new and different, described as more abstract fantasy. And guess what: it will also be one of his best work because he's in his element. And there were also Bioshock 2, Bayonetta 2, Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect 2 (AND 3, YES!) Kingdom Hearts 2 (1.5 / 2.5 / 2.38987 or whatever) and Half Life 2 (Portal 2 as well) Terminator 2, and Aliens, and hell, Uncharted 2 (and 3, and 4)
And now there's also a second coming of The Last of Us looming over us all, and I still keep having these thoughts, that TLOU was perfection and nothing else needs to happen in that universe. But then I tell myself to bite my tongue and remember that I, being an unworthy shrimp that I am, should just let Druckmann and his team do their job.

Loved the video, as always! I'm genuinely torn on whether there should be a Bloodborne 2. The part of me that adores the atmosphere and lore craves a new chapter, but at the same time I don't want to accept that at the cost of the game's integrity. In the same vein, Bloodborne closes its game with what I feel is nearly a perfect sense of closure. The story could easily end right there with the sense of ascendance and that the night will repeat over and over again. It's a real masterpiece because when you get into it, the game keeps you pondering its concepts over and over again, all the while you get to appreciate its luscious design. What I feel is that I want a sequel only if it's going to have a similar level of care and passion put into it as the first. If that can't be the case, then I'm excited to see what FromSoft comes up with next!

I actually just beat Bloodborne for the first time myself, and I have to say - the ending left me satisfied. I knew what became of my character, and a sequel would feel weird. How would they continue the game if our Hunter is a Great One? Not to mention how complete the lore feels. A second Bloodborne style game would be nice, but in a different setting with new worlds to explore and lore to uncover. But Bloodborne itself should be left alone, satisfying to complete and filled with tons and tons of lore.

why can't we have both? BB 2 and a new IP, just like we got DS 2 while BB was already in development. some would say Miyazaki won't be at the helm as he wasn't in DS 2. But I enjoyed DS 2 nevertheless, and so did many others. So yes, I want more BB.

I completely disagree with you. You are blowing things way out of proportion here. The whole basis for your opinion on the matter seems assume that Bloodborne is going to become a series (like Resident Evil or Assassin's Creed) that has more than ten sequels and goes all over the place. But we're talking about one sequel here. Just one. And I understand that it can be risky making sequels in any case, but taking risks breeds good things. Bloodborne itself was a total risk by Sony and From Software and look how it worked out. Besides, if you really don't want a Bloodborne II, but it gets released anyway, all you would have to do is not play it.

We have already seen FROM can do both. They were developing BB And DS2 at the same time I think. This is financially the best option. Milk the established IP for extra money while making something new in the background

Bloodborne 2 Confirmed. DEAL WITH IT ! Everyone who wishes Bloodborne 2 should not exist, shall burn ! Erm ... but what statement is that???? From Software should stop developing games now???

I'm conflicted because I think Bloodborne has so much going for it not to use it for a sequel but I'm also skeptical because, well look at Dark Souls' sequels. Same story with Demon's Souls.

I bought a ps4 just for this game. Played it for like ~130-150 hours. Sold my ps4 because of financial problems. When I was financially stable again, I bought the ps4 slim just to play this game again. I'm not playing every day, maybe in periods of two-three weeks and then a hiatus of a few months. But I always come back.
Easily the best game in years.

And the only one that introduced stat reallocation. It would have been so cool to have it in bloodborne. People give it a lot less credit than it deserves.

I see where you're coming from, but I disagree. I just think there's SO MUCH more they could do with this game. With the setting, the lore and the transforming weapons. I don't want them to milk the franchise by any means, but I just want to see more of this game. Maybe just one sequel? Bloodborne is my absolute favorite game of all time and I just need more. Of course there's every chance that it'll be shit and doesn't live up the the first game, but I don't really care. DS2 didn't live up to DS1 and I still enjoyed the game regardless. I dunno. Maybe it'll actually be good? Maybe it won't even happen? I don't really know.

It's like you would want a sequel but you don't want to retread the same waters. Bloodborne's my first Souls game so I've never. Even if they would make a Bloodborne 2, I would like some empasis on "faction wars". Like how if you have a Radiance rune but if you're called into another world by someone who has a Corruption rune, you'll become a hostile hunter. Bloodborne mainly has that mainly towards the Vilebloods and Executioners. I wish there's some expanded on. As for lore, they'd have to traverse a different tale. Or take place in another "realm". Perhaps Bloodborne 1 takes place in Yharnam and Bloodborne 2 takes place in Wellachia or something. But, that's what I felt about Dark Souls 2 and 3 as well. Feels like you're treading the same waters but in a different game. But, on another hand, I see the games as standalone. As in, I wouldn't need to play Demon Souls and Dark Souls 1 to get what's going on in Dark Souls 2 and 3 if I was to start with a later installment.

So this is like 3 years from when the video was published, but I have thoughts so grats you get to read them lol.
I'll say what I always say about FS games. We don't know as much as we "theorize"' that we know. I think there's still a ton of info that is only hinted at, that we could easily have a well crafted BB2. HOWEVER, I fully understand the fear of it being a bust like DS2. I would only really want a BB2 if it was well crafted and connected to the original lore well.
