Die Royal Swedish Army Band ist Teil der legendären Royal Lifeguards. Auffälliges Merkmal der Uniformen aller Lifeguard-Mitglieder sind ihre glänzenden Pickelhauben. Auch am Berlin Tattoo 2011 in der O2 World begeisterte eine interessante Mischung aus Marschmusik, Folklore und beliebten schwedischen Pop-Stücken die Zuschauer.

What a beautiful group and so precise! I love the silver instruments and the uniforms. I don't think marching bands make political statements. They make music, and this group has it all. Sweden must be very proud.

How appropriate: a band in old Prussian uniforms marching through the Brandenbuerger Tor ! Up the Hohenzollerns and Georg Friedrich, Prinz von Preussen, for Head of State Deutschlands. Praise to Sweden and her Army for this Excellent Presentation.

Not to mention that before our period of peace, war was the norm. In the 17th century every third Swedish man died in the service, and Sweden was known as the land of widows. Gustavus Adolphus revolutionized warfare and is known as the "Father of Modern Warfare". His methods were copied by notables such as Turenne, Marlborough and Eugene of Savoy. And our national army is the oldest in the world. And we are the largest exporter of domestic military manufacture per capita in the world. Etc, etc.

The Swiss Guard was, and to a degree still is today, a bought mercenary force, which is very different from a national army. A national army draws its manpower from its own subjects, either by volontary enlistment or conscription.

Yes, its quite difficult, i think that "national" army is just the lawful army of the state (other types being private and rebel armies)
It seems that the oldest army still in service is the Pontifical Swiss Guard founded in 1506, when Kung Gustav Vasa was only ten years old :)

And unlike Poland, Sweden as a nation-state has never been occupied by foreign armies. Speaking of which, I assume you've heard of the Deluge? I rest my case.
I'd like to see some source on that one. All I could find was an unsourced paragraph on Wikipedia saying: "...and possessed its first standing army...". I've been wrong before, and gladly admit it, but I'm pretty sure I'm right o this one, given that I specifically spoke of a "national" army. Standing armies are one thing (the Romans had one, but that didn't make it the first national one), standing national armies, funded and controlled by a centralized power, another. I would like to point out that swedish army is not "the oldest" but one of the oldest, french army was founded by Charles VII during his reign in 1422 - 1461.

It is rather a question of us simply not having the resources, nor the political and social climate, required for leading your people into wars to coerce other peoples.
To hell with it, I can't let it slide: Sweden, during the Deluge, destroyed "188 cities and towns, 81 castles, and 136 churches in Poland". Not saying I'm proud of it, but it goes to show our "nice band" can be quite the killer.

Well, the hats are Prussian inspired but the uniform is actually inspired from the french if I remember correctly.

DAVID LOCKWOOD Sweden freely traded with both sides during World war 2 untill the Germans invaded denmark/norway and put up a blockade where we only traded with Germany officially but there were still transports to England that took place in secret. Generally we traded steel to Germany and ball bearings to England. I recomend "Spioner och spioner som spionerar på spioner" which would translate into something like "Spies and spies that spy on spies" by Tore Forsberg. It takes up all that stuff among other things that took place around the 2nd world war.

Extremely late reply, but no, you are wrong. Norway surrendered (june 10) long before any troop transports started. So there was no "free and unfettered movement" until much later, and even then it was restricted to mainly transporting soldiers to/from leave. Which means Germany weren´t allowed to move ie. heavy weapons and things like that.
The action which upset an internal crisis was when Sweden allowed a fully armed and battle-ready division to move from Norway to Finland (due to Operation Barbarossa in 1941).
