I'm coming to the realization that Viserys isn't stupid or weak, he's just kindhearted and forbearing almost to a fault, which others perceive as weakness and stupidity.
This episode has shown that he is not entirely vapid. He may not think for whats best for the realm at the moment but he is aware. Best king of westeros?
@@64chrom If a leader is smart many if not most of a leader's choices are rarely if ever from their own initiative, that doesn't make them weak. It means that they're humble and can easily recognize that someone else's perception of a situation is superior to their own. Daemon is the sort of leader who's every choice is of his own initiative and just about everything he does sows chaos and creates all sorts of unintended consequences. Which I guess are fine leadership qualities for battle but are practically useless anywhere else where you have to find ways to get along with people.
Best line ever said in a GOT episode period. "She's got a dragon you dumb c**t" My wife and I laughed so hard. That writer deserves an emmy just for that!
I’ve come to the conclusion that the inside the episode videos are specifically created for the critics. It explains why the show has such a high audience AND critics score. The audience is smart enough to infer what they are really doing & saying. The critics watch every inside the episode for an explanation of what they just watched & they buy the bs.
I agree, I think they're just continuing to use the woke moron critics to help boost their buisness while still making a good product so ,in theory, everyone likes them.
Same, from what I've heard I got to the same conclusion and I wouldn't bother to watch them now. I am engaged curious and interested with the show, but I'm not invested emotionally and watching everything they put out. I wouldnt miss commentary from these 3 gents though with a topic I enjoy :)
Shame all these nuisances and subtleties all basically evolve around the issue of heir and arranged marriages, as in four episodes in and its Little Women.
I really like how the relationship between Alicent and Rhaenyra is deteriorating because despite all her attempts to help her, Rhaenyra keeps messing things up and causing problems for her and Viserys, which is obviously understandable for Rhaenyra being forced to do what she doesn’t want to but frustrating for Alicent as she would never have been able to get away with this and she never had the choice that Rhaenyra does. It’s very subtle and very well done, and I love it as much as I hate to see it.
Characterizations are so excellently done. Why isn't anyone talking abt the Queen Alicent. Her finger picking since episode 1, her being a pillar of support for the king and Rhaenyra in episode 2, her sound advice to the king in episode 3 and now in episode 4, her repouchment with Rhaenyra. There are some much to talk about in each character. Art.
This episode was TERRIBLE. I feel like I’m being gaslit by people saying this show is good. The writing is bad. The acting is melodramatic. The pacing is off. The story is convoluted. And, that accent is dreadful!
Thank you for reading my thoughts. As much as I appreciate these three and their reviews, I feel like they brush past Alicent and focus on Rhaenyra, Otto, Daemon, Viserys... Alicent has shown herself to be the most sympathetic character by far because of her compassion, honesty and genuine caring nature for those around her, including Rhaenyra. She's not power-hungry like her father and maneuvers herself in this incredibly politically hositle environment as figure of kindness who genuinely wants the best for everyone and not just for herself. As we know, this will change and that's exactly why she needs MORE attention.
For Shad, about Alicent not looking much different after having two children: this is actually consistent with the lore. One of the reasons why Rhaenyra is supposedly jealous of Alicent later on is because Rhaenyra herself put on weight and lost her beauty, but Alicent, who is nine years older than Rhaenyra, retains her good looks.
Unfortunately they dont have the balls to cast a chubby woman and make that part of the story ....would have been nice but maybe the dragon wont fly that high with a fat woman on her back
@@patrickjuma1373 At the very least the actress playing older Rhaeynera is no beauty. She looks harsh and weathered and appears older than her uncle. I imagine her ultimate gruesume, demise more palatable for the audience as well.
@@yadanie6194 6 seasons and a movie ......In this climate i dont think they have the balls to show that end on tv .....will be off-screen for sure .....the older actress will take over to the end ....so better get used to her from next week on
I'm constantly disappointed in the dialogue and the dialogue scenes. Aye, it's a blessing they do a lot of saying without talking, because the talking bits are really hammy to my eye. Or maybe it's just the acting, which is really goddamn lacking. I mean sure, they manage to communicate the ideas of what the characters are saying to me, but with ZERO emotion communicated. Episode 4 is the first one where I didn't fall asleep and that was just because I was doing housework while "watching". It'd be a shame to put the names of GoT on this lackluster show, but after season 8 you'd really have to try to make it worse. Still, HBO is extremely lucky that Amazon is doing its best to make HoD look amazing in comparison.
My interpretation of Daemon’s actions with Rhaenyra were that the whole thing was planned out, he removed her cap so she could easily be identified by the spies of his mistress, he did enough with her in the brothel that the rumour could not be ignored, he was not in the least surprised when confronted by viserys, and had the marriage suggestion waiting to go, maybe not taking her maidenhood to keep the marriage honourable in his eyes. He also showed her the mummers show to kindle the idea that marrying him would be a good move for her.
Yeah I am left wondering if deep down he is more of a virtuous fella than he normally portrays. No other real explanation for him just bolting from the brothel - unless I missed something. I did not like his character at first but he's growing on me.
I really like the dichotomy between Rhaenyra and Alicent, Rhaenyra resists listening to her father at all times, despite him trying to do what's best for her, embracing any opportunity to rebel and actively rejecting marrying for tradition, Alicent has always done what her father told her to do, she's in a marriage she doesn't want to be in, in a position of power she doesn't want, and her father has only ever wanted what's best for himself and the Hightower lineage. If I were Alicent I'd be pretty damn pissed at Rhaenyra and it looks like they're starting to show that
@@kmjkmjkmj the show is deeper than that mate. Otto is throwing Daemon against viserys because he knows Viserys is malleable but Daemon isnt, he wants more power thats why he antagonizes Daemon against Viserys. As for Viserys, the guy is king, its his duty, and you know how bad he feels for all his bad actions, Otto does it knowingly, but Viserys really makes mistakes and always wants to better them.
Agreed and I did feel like Alicent was rightfully jealous of Rhaenyra when she heard about her and Daemon in the brothel because Rhaenyra got to choose who she slept with and Alicent didn't so Alicent is probably wishing that she still got to be free and going against the grain the same way Rhaenyra did
Shad Daemon said the inverse. Rhaenyra said it doesn't matter what the commoners think. Daemon said it is the only thing that matters when you plan to rule them.
Yoooo Otto’s face at the end when he was being confronted had me dying 😂 Also props to the kid (forgot his name ream me as you will) for gutting that prick. Fucking props to you little homie
Anyone notice that when the crazy old lady asked rany if she would like to know how she dies and for a second the was a dragon with flames coming out. It’s the little things like that, that makes it great
Yeah, thats what I thought too. Was hoping for a Sunfyre reference/easter egg too, but that may have been too much on the nose, so maybe its better this way
They were heavily relying on nudity and the fact they wanted Rhaenyra to get shagged due to coming of the age. The audience wanted that for a longtime and it appeals to lowest of the denominators.
Women like their sex scenes with intimacy and this episode had it in ways I have never seen Game of Thrones do before. The staring of one another, the caressing of her lips with his hand, the gripping of the hands while they kiss. Those are classic moments you see in a lot of romance novels and romantic movies, which maybe a lot of men might not recognize because they don't read or watch those as much. So to me I could definitely see the difference right away.
Right, a lot of people point the difference between sex scenes made for the female gaze or the male gaze and i think it really showed that there was a female director and how she wanted to show it through a woman's perspective
The guy called the kid craven, he has every right to DEMAND satisfaction! Rememner in game of thrones when Sam admitted to being craven and I think it was pip who shouted "People saw us talking to him!" So being craven is the worst thing imaginable and if someone calls you that you have no choice, by the rules of honor, to take the challenge. Ma man got his.
Yeah I totally agree not to mention the claim of being craven etc was made before the court so even back then the saying of 'talk shit get hit' was applicable between disagreeable parties.
Yep, calling someone craven is practically the definition of 'fighting words'. The guy has said you don't have the guts to fight, the only incontrovertible way to prove him wrong...
No, I think the scene was stupid. I highly doubt the kings guard would allow something like that to go down in the presence of the princess. It’s similar to the joust nonsense in episode 1.
@@shanecoyle8053 As long as it doesn't endanger the princess or her retinue, it doesn't matter, besides those house hate eachother so it's sort of a normal occurrence
I've got really bad PTSD and depression, watching you lads is a genuine treat, takes my mind off of troubling stuff. What you do is appreciated, keep fighting for Tolkien. o/
Thank you , thank you, thank you!!! Thanks for staying on topic and not turning this into another bagging on Rings of Power stream. That show truly deserves it but I want to hear you guys review THIS show. I saw the chat keep trying to drag ya down that path but you didn't take the bait this week and you covered the episode in entirety first. 💖💖💖
Agreed! I was going kind of crazy on the last stream skipping through the small rings of power discussion segments because I just don't care especially since the video had been titled episode 3 House of the dragon discussion not episode 3 and rings of power
@@RabidNemo Gary, Mauler and Shad use RoP to compare and contrast to HotD. Showing the stark differences between the two. I have no problem with them doing that. Even if they get in a few shots of RoP in the process.
Otto always knew Daemon was a bigger threat than Rhaenyra being he's a male heir. That's why he ratted on him about the ”heir for a day" comment and kept Daemon away from his brother. You can see Otto's reaction when Daemon returned to King's Landing on Caraxes. So if Daemon married Rhaenyra at least before Viserys dies, there would be no civil war. But nope. Viserys will banish Daemon again because of this rumor that Daemon took Rhaenyra's virginity. This leaves Viserys vulnerable like getting poisoned. Will be easier to overtake Rhaenyra's claim being she is a woman. And Otto will only make it worse by stating how promiscuous Rhaenyra is.
I think they did insinuate that women are known to fun outside the castle/marriage. When Otto gives the rumour to Viserys that she was at a pleasure house, the King say "and?". He didn't seem bothered until it was her "coupling" (😂) with Daemon seemed to upset him more. Loved this episode!
Nah both weak George rr martins formula is piss poor, build a character for 3 seasons to kill them off with the shock value that no longer shocks, it’s boring. The Thrones ending proved it, that kind of blasé character killing only works upto a point then season 8 was turned into a generic fairy tale ending, because at the end of the day everybody wants an ending. the crab prince was pointless, the battle tactics were pretty clumsy, and we know it’s just going to end with Danarys beginning, so they’ll most likely have Danny back in the last season. Origin obvious. Lastly Jesus they way they shoe horned in the song of fire and ice comment and that winter is coming in episode 1 of HOD was so on the nose. People slag off RoP but I don’t think it’s the best maybe 5/10 but I’d only give this a 6/10
Yeah it was really good. Just really well paced character development for the core cast. Also quite nuanced and thoughtful. Viserys is getting more and more interesting, as is everyone else. Viserys does have some glimpses of being a king who discerns the truth of what's best for the realm. And I think maybe Otto does think he's acting for the good of the realm, given how problematic female succession is viewed.
The older version of Alicent is a solid actress, and I think they're close enough that it won't be jarring. The one replacing Rhaenyra doesn't fill me with such optimism.
Yes that's what's worrying me also F it they should have just stuck with this version of Rhaenyra and let her age as the seasons pass...and yet I understand from all the damage the later seasons of GOT caused that they had no choice in "their" mindset to rush these characters=/
@@chillquinones5362 it’s not necessarily about rushing the characters though I can see where you’re coming from. The crux of the story takes place years later once the inevitable civil war has broken out. By the time it does, both Rhaenyra and Alicent have teenage children which the current actors couldn’t sell. I doubt the audience would want several seasons before the war breaks out, it’d get quite stale
@@jonnymoses6927 The show seems to have more than capable writers, well great writers in fact so far. For me and viewers as a whole are just salivating for a well written well acted show for years now across the sci-fi & fantasy genres that me personally wished they would have taken their time=/ you know whole lot can happen in a year especially when you're given the freedom to add context to a story that is but just one chapter of a book idk
Hollywood should see this review. This is what a good show does! It brings people together to talk like this. Listen to the joy of getting a good script. They're asking questions, curious about the characters motives and facial expressions! I'm listening and it's refreshing. This stream is what we miss. What we need. What we want to do.
One think I appreciate they have addressed (or at least mentioned) is how a young Rhaenyra would be reluctant to have kids. The book totally ignores this, but it's just logical that given how her mother died (and grandmother too!) she would be absolutely terrified at the prospect.
so refreshing to hear your guys talk about something you enjoyed. dealing with stuff that happened in a show instead of having to list all the dumb mistakes is a really nice experience.
Jon Snow and a lot of the characters are actually older in the Game of Thrones show, as Jon is 14 in the beginning of book 1 but S1 Jon is 17. Similarly Danny is 13 in the beginning of book 1 and turns 14 by the end of book 1 as she learns she's pregnant on her birthday. In the show Danny is supposed to be 16. Of course played by 20 year old actors (at the time) but it was a good change for the show.
The final scene between Viserys and Rhaenyra was awesome. Viserys says, "The truth doesn't really matter. Only perception." Then Rhaenyra talks about the double standards between males and females when it comes to having sex. Viserys goes, "YOU are my political headache!" I'm going to miss Paddy and Milly once they exit this show. Viserys really stood out again for me. Soft king? Sure. But good man and also a complicated one. Let's be real, Daemon and Rhaenyra do act like reckless brats and Viserys is juggling parenting between them. If you watch Cobra Kai, Viserys is a lot like Amanda LaRusso. The only sane person in the show. The only one who acts like an adult and is trying to avoid conflict. But Daemon and Rhaenyra are rebels. They want excitement and drama. This will only lead to bloodshed.
This is so spot on, especially about him being the Amanda LaRusso. Just started the 5th season and she is the only adult speaking any kind of sense!! Lol
Holly crap, what you just said about Bran looking over them through the weirwood at 34:53 when the show ends. It's gonna happen, I can feel it in my bones. It's already there when you think about it. The showrunners are making this show to be directly connected to Game of thrones (mentioning of the prophecy of the Song of Ice and Fire, the dagger), this has been made abundantly clear when they also willingly chose to use the GoT theme song instead of making an original score. Also, the weirwood ain't even supposed to be there in the first place, Martin knows this so there must be a reason. I'm telling you, the whole thing is meant to somewhat intertwine the two stories somehow, someway and if you really think about it, it's not exactly crystal clear who the Prince that was promised truly is. Danny and Jon are both Targaryen but the one who dealt the final blow to Ice King was Arya. Now, that is a plot hole if I ever saw one and I'm willing to bet that the showrunners/Martin want to attempt to patch it up through this show (or at least elaborate further on it as a cliffhanger for the next spinoff).
Daemon marrying Rhaenyra actually makes a lot of sense and could prevent a civil war. He purposely wanted to be seen with her by removing her scarf and his hoodie. He wanted the rumors to spread and didn't deny the allegations. He just didn't go through with it feeling perhaps guilt or surprised Rhaenyra actually wanted to do it. Daemon does have boner issues. The twist for me is how much aware Viserys really is. He is no fool and is aware of Otto's social climbing like Daemon and Rhaenyra do. As Tyrone Magnus asked, why does Viserys fire Otto if he believes what he told him? Then Rhaenyra gets some abortion tea. So Viserys assumes it did happen or at least is aware Rhaenyra got deflowered and is worried for any unwanted pregnancies. Rhaenyra will eventually marry Laenor Velaryon, rider of Seasmoke, in the next episode. If you only knew the type Laenor prefers. Episode 5 will be the last time we'll see Milly Alcock and Emily Carey. The major time jump happens by Episode 6. I'm guessing Otto will try to poison Viserys since he recently got fired. He will push for Alicent to lay claim for Aegon. Once Viserys dies, the Dance of the Dragons begins. This means civil war. Next week's episode has a fight breaking out and you see Criston fighting in the wedding. In the book, Criston is supposed to be with the Greens. If you see all the trailers, you can see an older Alicent looking back from a distance with Criston standing behind her. Hmmm.. What's really going on? Next week's episode is going to be crazy. I'm predicting Viserys dies. TV writers are altering some of the ages and timeline.
@@ROUGHSEES for what? I didn’t see any spoiler mentions outside of criston with the greens but if you don’t know the books the whole greens and blacks thing doesn’t have any meaning yet
The writing has been on loop since episode 1. "You have a duty" "I have a duty".. rinse repeat... The enemies, battles, have no context, script nor voice. They took 15 minutes of script and made 4 hours of footage. - this show has been agonizingly pointless so far... but it shows dragons and costumes. .. .. . .. . FFS this show is so flat.
@@EBDeveloper It is embarrassing the first season of game of thrones. The writing in this episode is unmatched. Astonishing character work. Glad you agree.
"You fell for my brother's trap! No I'll marry you to his ally... that'll show them that *I* don't fall for obvious traps!" - Viserys "Sweet Summer Child" Targaryen.
The problem with Jaehaerys was that he took the throne in place of his elder sister. His oldest sister married their eldest brother and had twin daughters by him before he was killed fighting their uncle who had usurped the throne after their dad died. Jaehaerys took the throne after the uncle died, in spite of his elder sister, and her daughters by their eldest brother still being alive. Jaehaerys passed over two female claimants to take the throne himself, and he was wise enough to realize that he could not simply turn around and ram his granddaughter Rhaenys down the realm's throat, despite his massive hypocrite of a wife insisting their first daughter, Daenerys, should be the heir, and then leaving him over it.
This video series, along with some of the videos about pre-release news and interviews, should be Exhibit A when anyone tries to say you just don't like anything new. You were _primed_ to hate it by the pre-release nonsense, but you still went in with eyes open and willing to change your mind, and the show itself has had actual merit. This is why so many of us get our entertainment news and reviews from independent sources like you.
I wish it was that simple but you need to remember Rings of Power has also been released and is being put head-to-head with this show since they are both meant to be fantasies.
With the Tolkien lore being more sacred of European culture and Martin's universe being newer and less so, it was more blasphemous to change Tolkien lore to introduce coloured characters than here.
To appear impartial and to spite RoP, these RUclipsrs have to reluctantly praise this program even though, they find it sh-i-te, pretty bland and pretty sh*tty.
Bottomline, Dameon has been the only saving grace of this bland and political show. Nothing in here screams fantasy nor is there a huge amount of action. The issue of boys, heirs, alliances and arranged marriages over and over again sends most sane people insane. It is a mediocre show and these high praises are not sincere.
there is something for everyone in HOTD --> action (eg. the tourney in episode 1, the battle of the Stepstones), political intrigue (eg. Otto Hightower, the Velaryons), great acting (Paddy Considine, Matt Smith), dialogue that has not been dumbed down to the lowest common denominator, attention to detail (eg. deterioration of Viserys, the armour, individualising the dragons which in GOT were identical just with a slightly different colouring), nods to the books and lore (eg. a more elaborate Iron Throne, Viserys cutting himself on the throne, a Blackwood fighting a Bracken in this episode), pacing, graphic scenes, set up (eg. Clubfoot with the women at the hunt, Rhaenyra using Criston Cole for her own pleasure which probably leads to his resentment down the line), the role of and double standards for women in this world, the sets etc. if HOTD proves to be successful, then hopefully they explore other eras of Targaryen rule --> the Blackfyre Rebellions, Dunk & Egg, Robert's Rebellion, Aegon's conquest the actor who played Barristan Selmy pleaded with D&D not to kill off the character and their response was it made them want to kill the character even more... idiots... and unsurprisingly, season 8 of GOT aired three years ago and what have they done since? their idea for "Confederate" never got off the ground, a comedy special, and another book adaptation for Netflix... they backed out of their Star Wars deal
Paddy considine is just absolutely killing the role...was never in doubt for me...if you've ever seen him in dead mans shoes then you know the guys an amazing actor
46:00 regarding the Sept's (and Maester's) deslike for the Targeryans: After Aegon I ruled his son Aenys. He married Alyssa Velaryon and they had several children. The two eldest, Aegon and Rhaena, married each other, and that led them into captivity by members of the Faith of the Seven who denounced and desliked their sinful union. It was thanks to that stalemate that Maegor, Aenys' brother, took the throne. Alyssa was able to flee with Jaehaerys and Alysanne. Etc etc. After Maegor dies, Jaehaerys also weds his sister, Alysanne, a decision refuted by everyone around them including their mother. Somehow, through stubborness and some threatening diplomacy (Jaehaerys showed up on his dragon to a meeting with members of the council) he was able to go ahead with his marriage. By then, the realm had been in a civil war, some for the Faith, some for the Targaryens, some for Maegor, and the want for stability and peace might have also weighted in their aquiescing of the royal incest. Jaehaerys and Alysanne's children also married each other (some), including Viserys' parents. My point with this is to give credit to some resentment that the Faith might have grown for the Targaryens, on religious grounds; furthermore the Maesters were always (save for some rare scholars) suspicious of magic; plus, there had been enough dragon battles, and unstable or unworthy Targaryens to give them legitimate concerns over the reliability of their dinasty. The Grand Maester Conspiracy is a fandom especulation/theory about a plot that the maesters had of destroying the dragons. I don't know if it also acounts for an attempt of undermining and dethroning the Targaryens, but it's definitely possible that they contributed to the extinction of the dragons.
Someone needs to sit the team behind RoP down and make them watch an episode of this show. Maybe they could learn a thing or two about writing lol Speaking of creative team, wtf is going on with the comments in those _Inside_ episodes? It's like HotD creators don't even watch their own show
Great episode. Tension was unreal and Viserys and Daemon and Rhaenyra have grown into proper GoT heavyweights. Nobody is stupid. Everyone is a fully fleshed out character and none of them are true heroes or villains... just sharpened motivations and well written plots, arcs, and dialogue. Matt Smith is finally in a role where the world can see what Dr Who fans have known for 10 years. Every scene he's in, he has intentional and potent "what on earth is he doing?!?!?" energy. Don't watch this and then watch Rings of Power. It's just... not fair.
I actually kinda like these post episode commentaries. This way, they manage to get all of their woke talking poins into that, instead of ruining the show, which is actually really good and wouldnt call woke at all
The actors are forced by their agents and publishers to speak in "woke" language. Most of them at least. That is why their views are vastly different from what the actual show portrays. Excellent review guys, greetings from Greece
Gary, the term you’re looking for is “Retroactive Wokeness.” When the show running speak at the end of the episode and tell you something completely different then what was displayed on screen is “Retroactive Wokeness”.
This is my favourite part of the week. The three of you bring such knowledge and chemistry to digging into this show and because it's good we don't have to spend braincells dissecting the bizarre decisions of modern hollywood.
I have not read the books and watched House of Dragons twice tonight. There is so much there in terms of unspoken communication, nuance. Fantastic character development and storytelling.
You guys not understanding the maester conspiracy is killing me! It doesn’t matter that the throne cut him. Your wounds still heal. Unless the people treating you (the maesters) aren’t treating you. And the maesters take orders from House Hightower. They are working for him.
It's just a theory though. At this point, house Hightower doesn't want Viserys dead, Aegon is still quite young. Obviously it would be better for them if Viserys dies later on, when Aegon is already a young man able to press his claim by himself.
This was the first episode I honestly REALLY enjoyed. I was pretty ok with the other episodes. Not blown away but not mad. But damn, this episode was so good.
I think its terrible how they portray motherhood in the show, every shot of the queen with her baby there's like horror film music and the baby is always crying
I don't think what their trying to say is "motherhood bad" I believe the message here is that Alicent is suffocating. She in a marriage she doesn't really want and she has to act like the queen she is, which in her own words makes her feel lonely like all her friends are afraid of her now. These things cause her anxiety (that's why she is biting her nails so much) and this anxiety passes over to her children. It is common for children to catch on to their parents emotions and Alicent is clearly not calm so her children's behaviour reflects that
My only issue was she kept reminding of me Jasmine from Aladdin. And then Daemon calls her a street rat and she steals something and runs off. I don't really know what they were thinking on that...
LOL My husband and I were watching and as Otto kept struggling to explain what he thought she was doing in the pleasure houses, I kept saying "Just say it. COUPULATING! It's the best way to put it" and then he basically did! 😂
Just watched the new episode last night, and in terms of advice, one part just blew me away. It was such a basic moment, but after so much bad and cringey dialogue and advice from ROP, HOTD just feels so much better. But the simple part that unintentionally made me go 'lets compare this to that shite advice from Galadriel's brother, shall we?' Was Daemon's reply to his nieces fit about not wanting to get married or have kids; if you spend your life in fear, you'll miss the good that happens. Such a simple, basic piece of advice, but it was actual advice... And it kinda stunned me for a second. After all of the bad in ROP, it was so nice hearing something genuine and not attempted poetry.
It's fun binging these review videos during the run of the second season of this show, watching you guys slowly turn from nervous and cautiously optimistic to really enjoying the show.
The ambiguity that was afforded at the end was excellent. It's now quite understandable how there were splintering rumours in the books. If the princess takes the 'tea', then it's as if she has confessed to fucking Daemon, but if she doesn't, she might be burdened with Ser Cole's child, which is obviously worse, especially when she's about to wed Laenor who is, well, gay. Regardless, the King and Alicent would never think of her the same. On a side note, Alicent is just sweet, I wonder how they're going to develop her going forward.
Anyone else notice the girls were wearing the opposite color dresses to their later factions during the weirwood confrontation? Alicent was in red and black while Rhaenyra was in green.
Ehhhh I like deamon and find him MUCH more interesting than Rhaenyra. Who I still find extremely bleh. At the moment, there isn’t much hooking me. It’s a good show mind you!. But eh..
I love these reviews, but Nerdrotic’s constant “you’ll find out soon. Trust me, it gets crazy” half spoilers are unnecessary. It’s like when the original Game of Thrones was airing and the book readers would call everyone “a sweet summer child” every 5 minutes. I get it, you know the ending. I know I don’t HAVE to watch this, but I really enjoy these conversations!
U think the guy who’s grooming his niece & took her to a brothel to ✌️“couple”,✌️ “liked her” so much he wanted to wait until marriage to bed her all of a sudden. PERLEASE! His body language of not even wanting to kiss her suggested otherwise to me. There was no love in his avoidance. I saw it as more disgust. Which is why he walked off abruptly. I think he intended to do it, but couldn’t when it came to it OR his plan was always the perception & not the act. He fully well knows about white worms little birds. Why would he take Ranhyera to a public place? Especially when he took off her hat revealing her white Taragreyan-esque hair & handing it to a brothel ‘worker’. It was always his attention for them to be seen.
I admit I love seeing these reviews. I am also excited to see Shad. Been a fan, and subscriber, of his for a couple years. Thanks Gary for bringing him on. Hail!
I wonder about those after the show talks because whoever is putting in the real work feels like they're just letting them say whatever and keeping his eye on the prize.
I actually didn't like this episode. It functioned on 2 major elements of informational withholding or disbelief. I cannot believe that Viserys isn't aware, or in charge of through the small counsel, of the spy network through King's Landing. Otto didn't have Rhaenyra followed, the spies are around and Viserys should readily know this. Plus what Otto told him was essentially corroborated, and so Viserys' reaction to Otto is unwarranted. Alternatively, if Viserys isn't aware of the spies simply being present in King's Landing, then Otto should be astute enough to make a reasoned excuse, explaining that he commissioned spies to follow Daemon, and Rhaenyra was with him. Smart characters acting and reacting stupidly doesn't do it for me. Also, Viserys constantly complaining that Rhaenyra is a problem, and yet doggedly sticking by her as heir even though she isn't proving herself to be of transcendent character (which would be the only way a woman would hold the realm together when taking power), is maddening to me. She is so petulant, a logical action would be to simply marry her away and Aegon made heir. This would be best for him, for Rhaenyra, for the realm. I also don't like the dichotomy that Viserys accuses Otto of attempting to usurp the throne by promoting Aegon, while also promoting Rhaenyra to be married to a male who will essentially displace her as ruler in any logical conclusion.
Clicked on the video without reading much of the title. Thought it was a review of Episode 4 of Rings of Power, and was a bit shocked and surprised to suddenly hear them praise the writing characterisation of the show. Then realised they were actually talking about HoD lol.
It’s wild to compare Milly Alcock in this to Morfyd Clark in ROP. Both are strong, stubborn, bullheaded, driven women, but Milly Alcock imbues a humanity into her character so you actually like her. Whereas Morfyd Clark in ROP is literally ONLY those traits and there’s nothing behind it.
You mean the incest and having sex with men two decades older? Yeah, great episode, bro!!!!11!! I'm sure that you probably hate the Rings of Power but love this show.
1:48:11 the final scene with the tea force Raymera to demonstrate whether she sexed or not. The Father doesn’t have to know. By drinking it, she admits to sexy Not drinking it means she is innocent, for now, unless she reveals her guilt by being pregnant. It is a huge gamble for her to not drink the tea. And if she does, it will leave no doubt. Her father-king proves his wisdom in presenting her with that choice.
There is a series of books called Winterlands, by Barbara Hambly. One point made clear in the first novel by the main character was that his killing of a dragon before the series starts was accomplished through guile, tricking the beast into a gully and shredding its' wings with poisoned harpoons to ground it. Fascinating take on the more typical "single knight rides up with shining lance trope."
Also, the 'Darkness' series by Harry Turtledove depicts dragons as stupid, mindless, aggressive predators that shit poison and piss acid. Wonderful series, worth a read.
I just wanted to add my voice of appreciation. I really enjoy these streams of you guys talking. I have never seen any of the dragons shows, but just listening to your interactions is really entertaining and interesting. Keep it up guys. Thank you folks 😊
Loved the progress and content of this episode, “4”. Can live a few lifetimes without ever seeing another interview with director or cast. They always ruin it. Each time one of them "identifies as” and uses “they/them” as pronoun name they need to be slapped and told to stop, just stop now. Just a gentle slap on the wrist. This is a welcome series, and it’s a prequel which is usually a death knell, Dance of Dragons is well done all around. Hope they continue to progress and not be progressive. Watched Metalacolypse because next Primal is Friday. The episode when Nathan has nightmares about working at a burger joint named “Dimmu Burger” !!! is so perfect. Dimmu Burger, haha! In the next episode the producer ghouls meet at a joint named Burzums. “Burzums”! even better, “I’ll have filet of crying orc, please”.
All the tea! Love this. Seeing the difference between sleeping and baby-making with a scabby older man vs Rhaenyra having her cake and eating it to….and getting a sexual liberation…. The contrast was excellent. And the look of anger on Alicent was jealousy. Alicent would never get to do that.
What you described is what makes this episode and her character trash. She's supposed to be the heir to the throne. As a future queen it's her responsibility to produce a new heir to secure the succession of the throne and to stabilize the kingdom. Yet she does the worst thing possible by having promiscuous sex with a random man.
Almost half the episode was an underage looking girl banging her uncle and I clicked forward ten minutes just to see her in another sex scene with her knight. That "liberation" was pure cringe.
Its Good to hear you guys talk about a show that you like and in my opinion is very good and even though i know the story its good to sea how they are showing it. Good effort fellas, top notch

I'm coming to the realization that Viserys isn't stupid or weak, he's just kindhearted and forbearing almost to a fault, which others perceive as weakness and stupidity.
He is weak most he's choices aren't from his initiative, but someone else's. In a position of power it's a huge weakness
@@64chrom but he’s not completely stupid
He's a peacetime King. Someone who's actually interested in the well-being of everyone and wants to avoid conflict whenever possible.
This episode has shown that he is not entirely vapid. He may not think for whats best for the realm at the moment but he is aware. Best king of westeros?
@@64chrom
If a leader is smart many if not most of a leader's choices are rarely if ever from their own initiative, that doesn't make them weak.

Art.
I seriously like her. I suspect she will have a miserable ending lol
@@westsonrises She might actually make a pretty good Queen. *winkwink foreshadowing
This episode was TERRIBLE. I feel like I’m being gaslit by people saying this show is good. The writing is bad. The acting is melodramatic. The pacing is off. The story is convoluted. And, that accent is dreadful!
This show is really capturing that magic of early GOT

@@yohanespaskal9352 THE SEA IS ALWAYS RIGHT
My interpretation of Daemon’s actions with Rhaenyra were that the whole thing was planned out, he removed her cap so she could easily be identified by the spies of his mistress, he did enough with her in the brothel that the rumour could not be ignored, he was not in the least surprised when confronted by viserys, and had the marriage suggestion waiting to go, maybe not taking her maidenhood to keep the marriage honourable in his eyes. He also showed her the mummers show to kindle the idea that marrying him would be a good move for her.
Well in the books when Daemon got caught he said
"Give me the girl to wife. Who else will take her now?"
Good points !
Yeah I was wondering why he took her cap off like that… good points
@@Adam-ul2nz he basically said the same thing in the show
Yeah I am left wondering if deep down he is more of a virtuous fella than he normally portrays.

It's funny that an uncle and a niece has more chemistry than an elf and a human. As a great man once said, FAMILY.
FAMILY
FAMILY
It's about family, and that's what's so powerful about it.
Talk about elf and humans, this episode was f*cking nauseating and cringey as sh*t.
Maybe but as a man I think I would direct it similarly.
Right, a lot of people point the difference between sex scenes made for the female gaze or the male gaze and i think it really showed that there was a female director and how she wanted to show it through a woman's perspective
I'm a dude and I like it that way but...most guys I know don't so...yeah.
It's definitely a gender thing, but not a bad one.
That is because it was directed by a woman.
Its really good I admit, so I thought the director did a good job!

Hollywood should see this review. This is what a good show does! It brings people together to talk like this. Listen to the joy of getting a good script. Hollywood is very aware of gary and mauler
One think I appreciate they have addressed (or at least mentioned) is how a young Rhaenyra would be reluctant to have kids. The book totally ignores this, but it's just logical that given how her mother died (and grandmother too!) she would be absolutely terrified at the prospect.
"Viewing the tapestry" will now always hold a new meaning!!!
The newest of innuendos. I'll add it to my list.
I think Daemon would very much be into the tapestries if it’s the same one we keep seeing in Alicent scenes.

This episode gave the term "uncle fucker" a new but also direct meaning..
The final scene between Viserys and Rhaenyra was awesome. Viserys says, "The truth doesn't really matter. Only perception." Then Rhaenyra talks about the double standards between males and females when it comes to having sex. Viserys goes, "YOU are my political headache!"
I'm going to miss Paddy and Milly once they exit this show.
I'm hoping it docent go season 8 on us when Paddy and Milly leave.

If he was gonna marry rhaenyra to daemon probably better at that point to just marry her to aegon

His oldest sister married their eldest brother and had twin daughters by him before he was killed fighting their uncle who had usurped the throne after their dad died. Jaehaerys took the throne after the uncle died, in spite of his elder sister, and her daughters by their eldest brother still being alive.
Clubfoot with the women at the hunt, Rhaenyra using Criston Cole for her own pleasure which probably leads to his resentment down the line), the role of and double standards for women in this world, the sets etc.
if HOTD proves to be successful, then hopefully they explore other eras of Targaryen rule --> the Blackfyre Rebellions, Dunk & Egg, Robert's Rebellion, Aegon's conquest
the actor who played Barristan Selmy pleaded with D&D not to kill off the character and their response was it made them want to kill the character even more... idiots... and unsurprisingly, season 8 of GOT aired three years ago and what have they done since? their idea for "Confederate" never got off the ground, a comedy special, and another book adaptation for Netflix... they backed out of their Star Wars deal
Amen brother amen
I so badly want to see Aegons Conquest. it's my favorite period of the Targaryen rule.
@@christophergirardi8145 I want to see the first Blackfyre Rebellion most... I think it has the best collection of characters outside of ASOIAF
Well put on a side note that Blackwood kid will be back if you know you know
Paddy considine is just absolutely killing the role...was never in doubt for me...if you've ever seen him in dead mans shoes then you know the guys an amazing actor
Maybe they could learn a thing or two about writing lol
Speaking of creative team, wtf is going on with the comments in those _Inside_ episodes? It's like HotD creators don't even watch their own show
Sit back and enjoy some actual story telling and superb acting in a great series. Very rare these days. Beautiful.
It's just... not fair.
Daemon in this show reminds me of Spike from Buffy.
I actually kinda like these post episode commentaries. This way, they manage to get all of their woke talking poins into that, instead of ruining the show, which is actually really good and wouldnt call woke at all
👍
May we never see an episode that forces shad to wield a foam bat
First Nerdrotic was radicalized.
Now Nerdrotic has been Shadicalized.
This really is the best timeline.
*he got Machiculated
The actors are forced by their agents and publishers to speak in "woke" language. Most of them at least. That is why their views are vastly different from what the actual show portrays. Excellent review guys, greetings from Greece
Its so exhausting, isn't it? 🤦🏼♀️
I'm so over it!
Gary, the term you’re looking for is “Retroactive Wokeness.” When the show running speak at the end of the episode and tell you something completely different then what was displayed on screen is “Retroactive Wokeness”.
Also gaslighting
Woke apologetics?
@The Rotten💯 HBO has actually found a bug exploit
Huh, so it's not just the leftists that make up Buzzwords. It's you guys too.
Man, I had hope.
Dragons were artificially created with blood magic, the world is better off without them, the maesters are right.
@@SquashGuy02134 Dragons = Nuclear bombs!
It's just a theory though. At this point, house Hightower doesn't want Viserys dead, Aegon is still quite young. Obviously it would be better for them if Viserys dies later on, when Aegon is already a young man able to press his claim by himself.
He also didn't choose to have the fingers cut off, so the maesters weren't able to save him from the infection.
@@frankvandorp2059 no shit. I didn’t realize he died, I guess I’ll rewatch the episode 🙄🙄
Imagine if Galadriel had been handed the map? She'd be stuck in that room, looking at it upside down, for the next 500yrs.
It is common for children to catch on to their parents emotions and Alicent is clearly not calm so her children's behaviour reflects that
Aegon and the daughter were crybabies in the books too dw
My only issue was she kept reminding of me Jasmine from Aladdin. And then Daemon calls her a street rat and she steals something and runs off. I don't really know what they were thinking on that...
I love the wholesome moral angle Shad brings to these chats about this cynical and nihilistic deconstructionist series.
LOL My husband and I were watching and as Otto kept struggling to explain what he thought she was doing in the pleasure houses, I kept saying "Just say it. COUPULATING! It's the best way to put it" and then he basically did! 😂
Best show I’ve seen in a long time let’s hope it doesn’t shit the bed
Just watched the new episode last night, and in terms of advice, one part just blew me away. It was such a basic moment, but after so much bad and cringey dialogue and advice from ROP, HOTD just feels so much better.
But the simple part that unintentionally made me go 'lets compare this to that shite advice from Galadriel's brother, shall we?'
Was Daemon's reply to his nieces fit about not wanting to get married or have kids; if you spend your life in fear, you'll miss the good that happens.
Such a simple, basic piece of advice, but it was actual advice... And it kinda stunned me for a second. After all of the bad in ROP, it was so nice hearing something genuine and not attempted poetry.
They got me and my wife hooked now.
Also, Cole looks somewhat similar to Bonebreaker Strong. Pretty good explanation for some of those bastards....
Valeria steel is SUPER light as well. A major speed advantage for Rhaegar if he had Blackfyre.
Anyone else notice the girls were wearing the opposite color dresses to their later factions during the weirwood confrontation? Alicent was in red and black while Rhaenyra was in green.
I did not, but I do know
Rhaenyra is Aes - Sedai - she did not lie, notice what she said, she said it exactly and on purpose to conceal the information but not to lie.
I don t uderstand how people only say season 8 of got was bad.....season 7 was crap also
It’s getting better with every episode.
Getting worse with every episode.
@@dgb921 This episode was the best so far
@@dgb921 elaborate
Ehhhh I like deamon and find him MUCH more interesting than Rhaenyra. Who I still find extremely bleh. At the moment, there isn’t much hooking me. It’s a good show mind you!. But eh..
@@dgb921 weak bait
I love these reviews, but Nerdrotic’s constant “you’ll find out soon. Trust me, it gets crazy” half spoilers are unnecessary. It’s like when the original Game of Thrones was airing and the book readers would call everyone “a sweet summer child” every 5 minutes. I get it, you know the ending. I know I don’t HAVE to watch this, but I really enjoy these conversations!
If the episodes stay this good it can be allowed to have them microdose THE MESSAGE inside the episode thing at the end.
Lol just skip it. Skip the end.
My God, Matt Smith is just killing it.. all the little things he does with his face and body, it's just *chef's kiss*
The seeds of treason are sown
I admit I love seeing these reviews. I am also excited to see Shad. Been a fan, and subscriber, of his for a couple years. Thanks Gary for bringing him on. Hail!
I wonder about those after the show talks because whoever is putting in the real work feels like they're just letting them say whatever and keeping his eye on the prize.
Nerdrotic should have a Lego replica of old Valaria behind him. 😂
Im pretty sure the guy killed was a Bracken, not a Baratheon, which would make a lot of sense, as Blackwoods and Brackens always hated eah other
Def a Bracken which makes it even better
Bloodraven and Bittersteel 0.5?
Benjicot Blackwood aka Bloody Ben
It’s wild to compare Milly Alcock in this to Morfyd Clark in ROP. Both are strong, stubborn, bullheaded, driven women, but Milly Alcock imbues a humanity into her character so you actually like her. Whereas Morfyd Clark in ROP is literally ONLY those traits and there’s nothing behind it.
At first I thought the episode was a bit slow but then I started noticing just how much character development was going on and was sucked in.
You mean the incest and having sex with men two decades older? Yeah, great episode, bro!!!!11!! I'm sure that you probably hate the Rings of Power but love this show.
I hope when the new actors come in it doesn’t ruin the show that’s been doing really well so far. Really going to miss those actors.
6:15 let's hope the nunchakus will never come-out
As i recall Maegery was getting moon tea for one of her cousins (a handmaiden iirc) and yes, this was used against her.
This is by far the best episode.
Nooo! Shad’s titanium brigandine! I hope it makes it to him sometime in the not-so-distant future!
I like the show and your break down after, very nice!
1:48:11 the final scene with the tea force Raymera to demonstrate whether she sexed or not. The Father doesn’t have to know.
By drinking it, she admits to sexy
Not drinking it means she is innocent, for now, unless she reveals her guilt by being pregnant.
It is a huge gamble for her to not drink the tea. And if she does, it will leave no doubt.
Her father-king proves his wisdom in presenting her with that choice.
Was probably the slowest of the 4 episodes so far. Doesn’t mean it was bad. I think ep 4 gets a big payout later
One thing I'd like to know is what's with all the candles again?
I hate to bring up ROP but wow what a difference in writing, directing and just everything. it makes that Amazon show look so amateur.
By Shad’s AXE, that was a fun episode. Really want more action but it was good story telling.
You’ll get it,just be patient 😂
I just like how they are just showing not telling
All the tea! Love this. Seeing the difference between sleeping and baby-making with a scabby older man vs Rhaenyra having her cake and eating it to….and getting a sexual liberation…. The contrast was excellent. And the look of anger on Alicent was jealousy. Alicent would never get to do that.
That was sexual liberation? Getting a guy to betray his vows and risk execution?
What you described is what makes this episode and her character trash. She's supposed to be the heir to the throne. As a future queen it's her responsibility to produce a new heir to secure the succession of the throne and to stabilize the kingdom. Yet she does the worst thing possible by having promiscuous sex with a random man.
@@2010Failbrids I meant going through the orgy scene and sort of having the ability to be free. I think you’re missing my point
@@reilysmith5187 Because you made no mistakes at 18? Because you would handle all that pressure at 18 perfectly? Come on nobody’s perfect
Almost half the episode was an underage looking girl banging her uncle and I clicked forward ten minutes just to see her in another sex scene with her knight. That "liberation" was pure cringe.
