Thankyou Andrea for sharing. I could relate to the no insulin and no food before exercise in the morning. Have found I am better to be lowish before hand, 5.0 good, as always go up , get home from gym and will be around 8. For a lot of years , but younger then , use to scuba dive, one dive in the morning, would have a piece of toast, only over night insulin, no fast one, dive with level around 11 and would be safe, level around 7 after dive. My specialist told me I was never to dive again after diagnosis. But had to work out a way to do it. I wasn't going to sit on the shore and watch my teenage boys go , and I couldn't. Started diving two years before type 1 came along from hepatitis B vaccination for work, was 41.

I hear you!! It may be worth talking to your doctor about reducing your background (basal) insulin rates or adjusting you mealtime dosages to accommodate for this extra movement! So many lows can be such a downer - so I really really hear you!!

You are so welcome! I totally understand how it's difficult to understand blood sugar and get to grips with it all. Hi Q.1: I work in construction and for breakfast I inject normally not taking into account that maybe in an hour or two at work I might be having to work lifting heavy objects etc. I sometimes inject less but then obviously am slightly high until I start which again due to travel, might be a while.. what's best here? I just want a good balance without risking going high affecting my life in future potentially.. tricky .. then I also gym in afternoon 😮
Okay - this is a classic and tricky one! You are so not alone on this - I can completely and utterly relate to this scenario! Are you on an insulin pump or injections? If you're on an insulin pump you could look at reducing your basal rate after breakfast in anticipation for the physical labour (obviously discuss this all with your doctor before taking action)? However, if not, or if that doesn't work well for you you could introduce a snack pre labour, or some fast acting glucose (tabs or gel) to keep you up and in range. It depends also on what your definition of high is. Often times I'm really trying to maintain extremely tight control and as a result and constantly close to the cusp of lowness the minute I introduce any movement. I am working at the moment to combat this by running my sugars a little higher (150ish) and seeing where that takes me post meals. A few pieces of food for thought (no pun intended- hehe!) to help you there. I really hope you figure out what works best for you!! And if you're not on a pump these scenarios are greatly helped by being on one and being able to do temporary basal rates. Might be worth speaking to your doctors about all of that!

My specialist wont get me on a pump as he doesnt see me going low enough, crazy. I am even crazier contemplating buying a pump but, so expensive I need to be sure. Yeah my job... it's a case of, knowing in some form of anticipation what activity I'll be doing. Lots of running around with lifting etc etc or, next to nothing walking so I need to get with that I think. My levels generally speaking, my levels are not really crazy high or major low however, I'm in target (5-8 uk measures!) Just 30% of time. A high fir me would be say 20 Highish would be 15 Ok is 10 Good is 6 or 7 This year with Coronavirus, things have changed .. but eventually I aim to go back onto a carbs course and understanding insulin, plus, consider my work position but also get a pump maybe year or even 2 years .. tweaking everything to just improve right?! Thank you again.
I would say the same amount as anyone - doesn't matter if you have t1d or not, with regards to the water question. In terms of diet soda. I stopped drinking diet soda several years ago and felt a heck of a lot better for it and also saw an improvement in my numbers overall. That's not to say it's 'bad' but I personally found the chemicals did funny things to my numbers and therefore I feel much better without it. Just my personal opinion and experience - not to be confused with fact! I hope this helps my friend!!

Video that talks about when you use extended blouses. It may not be pertinent to all because you’re GF cuz of Celiac but at least you can give tips on when and which kinds of foods. I know you mentioned that you’re vegan; how long have you been vegan? From a nerdy & a just in case point of view I made a list of foods I know I eat and listed their carbs (yes I did remember to subtract dietary fiber) I know you might not be the exact person to ask cuz they’re mainly pasta. I do have Amy’s Gluten Free Mac and Cheese on my list though. Also what do you do for pizza?
Thanks for this Marina! What an excellent question. I've been sitting down thinking about this video and thinking to be honest I may not be the best person for this topic because I very rarely if at all ever use extended boluses. I mostly just pre-bolus (meaning I take insulin 20 mins before a meal and then eat so as to avoid a spike, and allow the insulin to take effect). I eat mostly vegan, but am no longer completely vegan, and I very rarely eat pizza (maybe once or twice a year at most). So for these reasons I'm going to ask around the community and see if anyone else is interested in working on this topic, as I really feel it's valuable and a great suggestion, I just don't feel like I can personally speak with any kind of authority on it because I don't really utilise this function of my pump basically at all. I hope this helps, and am sorry I can't be more helpful to you!!!
Hi there. My partner has Type 1 and was wondering how to adjust on days when she doesn’t work out as she finds that’s when it get tricky… like if she wants a day or two off but can’t b/c Bs is too low or high. How would she adjust insulin assuming she is more sensitive to insulin on days you workout?

I swim so I always have a piece of toast with peanut butter before I head out. This morning I was at 117 before and 106 when I tested after. I'm t2 not t1 which could make a difference although I just started taking insulin.
Hello thank you for all this helpful information..I have a question 🥺. I really want to workout in the morning on a fasted stated but my blood sugar is usually very low in the morning, what would you suggest?
Are you on a pump or multiple daily injections? I would suggest looking a scaling back your overnight insulin rates so you wake up at a bit of a higher level. If you take long acting insulin maybe scale that back, or if you're on a pump talk to your doctor about turning down your basal rates overnight. I hope this helps!!! Always always always important to check with your doctor before making any changes to your dosing routine!!! GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND!!! 💙
Andrea, what do you do when you find that what you’re eating in a meal is under 10 carbs and you’re not having anything to make it above 15g or 20g of carbs, do you just not bolus? I know I watched Michelle Lord’s Low Carb Snacks video but still confused. What is the boundary line of the amount of carbs where u do & don’t bolus for carbs? I think these carbs questions are in the same category of being basic like that low blood sugar video of a couple of videos back. Definitely a video for these two questions. Hi Marina! I bolus from my pump - and can bolus for anything from 1g up, so I pretty much always bolus for anything and everything! I hope this helps answer your question! :)

I like to exercise in the morning as I'm more insulin resistant at that time, and thus able to exercise more easily without going low. And I personally like to exercise with my levels between 120-160 mg/dl. I hope this helps!
So I run track and play basketball and I don’t know what do u prefer the pump or the injection because with sports I feel as if the injection is good but my doctor always says professionals wear it
She's Diabetic no one in my family is diabetic(no blood relation anyway) so when i started using the restroom frequently, i said something to my mom and she said that she’ll take me to the doctor. but that never happened, so when i was diagnosed(April 9th, 2019) i was 618...oof
690 i think. maybe 700ish. i was 12 and was probably diabetic for a whole month before i got diagnosed. doctors said if i didn’t go to the hospital the day i did i would’ve died the next day. it’s been 4 years since my diagnosis
Great video again by you! I think you hit everything spot on! And I too to try not to exercise if high sugars Dr orders and I also lower background insulin at night after exercise, I sadly don't have a pump :-( but hoping for one soon :-) It can sometimes last 3 days with me but mostly 2 for sensitivities. Another thing with me I have to inject 5u after exercise to stop high spike seems like you are going to commit suicide :-) but works great for me! would not attempt this at all without a Dexcom G6 on me as I think it would be too risky Also not sure the effects on other exercises to do this as I'm sure different exercise affects us differently

How can you tell after exercising, like 2hrs, your blood sugar is still high, is that still cause by meal or cuz by over exercise. Thank you. I worked out for 40 minutes, sweating a lot, and felt a little bit tired, but after 1.5 hours I checked my blood sugar is still 200+. And it was about over 3 hours after my meal. So frustrated!
Oh gosh - I hear you - that is frustrating! It could be that exercise is actually making your blood sugar spike (some people have this experience), therefore, I would check your blood sugar throughout your workout, and try to figure out what's going on as you're exercising and then adjust food/insulin intake accordingly. I hope this helps! I know it's tricky and more than a little frustrating - but I promise - the more information you gather the easier it will be to make adjustments and achieve better control through and as a result of exercise. Hi I have a question hope you (or anybody) can help me...I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2018 (sorry I know your page is about type 1)...managed to get my a1c down from 10.8 (2018) to 5.1-5.2 in 2019-2020 so far. My morning numbers are in the mid - midhigh 80s. My 2 hours post prandials are actually in the mid-midhigh 80s also...it's just my 1 hour can get pretty high with higher carb meals (up to 35-40 grams). Without exercising it can go up to 160-180...but if I do a brisk 30-45 minutes walk i can get it down to 100-130...depending on the type of carbs (new foods/sauces usually tricky for me). So I'm just wondering if what I have is insulin resistance? Anybody could share any articles about 1 hour glucose? Since most of my searches only pull up gestational diabetes...thanks! btw i am on just one metformin 500xr per day. Tried experimenting with berberine lately to see if it can somewhat replace my metformin...
I was misdiagnosed with type 2 initially, and was put on the same metformin doses but my sugars were consistently 250-350 at any given point throughout the day. Exercise would spike it higher, but that was because I was already so high. You might already have an endocrinologist, but I was diagnosed properly with type 1 after changing my GP and seeing a specialist x
For me being a type 1 diabetic. I know my bs needs to be around 180 for a 30 min lap swim or 1 hour water aerobics. Important to eat a little protein to carry me through. BS when done is 100. Need to know your body.

Try BD ultra fine needles if using a insulin pen , check with your doctor/health care provider if you are doing something wrong , if you are to insert at 90 degrees that is perpendicular it generally is not painful .
4 times is firstly just too much times per day, make sire to change your injection as soon as you feel it spiking on your skin, otherwise problems may cause. Sometimes insulin get sharpy in 9 days or 5 days it depends. And you can also inject the insulin on your legs where you have more mass and more places.

Hey I'm 25 and been diabetic since 2018 I was on a pen untill recently I switched to a omnipod and I find it much better. Having options like Basel adjustment and getting fractions on units for bolus treatments is awesome. If you can afford it I'd highly recommend it
It is really dangerous when your sugar goès low at night. The major problem is sometimes i know it when my sugar drops and sometimes i dont. I had a fix two times at night and i had to be taken to hospital. Since then i am very careful about sleeping at night. My mother really freaked out . So be very careful guys especially when you are sleeping.
SO true! I'm so sorry to hear of your two hospital visits as a result of overnight lows. Oh gosh, those are just the absolute worst. Please know my heart goes out to you. omg I feel you! And I was diagnosed almost 2 years ago as well. (Plus, I'm 23) I tried doing everything that helps with losing weight and last week I got hospitalized cuz of hypoglycemia :( anyways keep on fighting and don't lose hope! That's what I've been telling myself since the beginning of this thing.

That's not to say it's 'bad' but I personally found the chemicals did funny things to my numbers and therefore I feel much better without it. Just my personal opinion and experience - not to be confused with fact! I hope this helps my friend!!

I've been sitting down thinking about this video and thinking to be honest I may not be the best person for this topic because I very rarely if at all ever use extended boluses. I mostly just pre-bolus (meaning I take insulin 20 mins before a meal and then eat so as to avoid a spike, and allow the insulin to take effect). I eat mostly vegan, but am no longer completely vegan, and I very rarely eat pizza (maybe once or twice a year at most). So for these reasons I'm going to ask around the community and see if anyone else is interested in working on this topic, as I really feel it's valuable and a great suggestion, I just don't feel like I can personally speak with any kind of authority on it because I don't really utilise this function of my pump basically at all. I hope this helps, and am sorry I can't be more helpful to you!!!
Hi there. My partner has Type 1 and was wondering how to adjust on days when she doesn’t work out as she finds that’s when it get tricky… like if she wants a day or two off but can’t b/c Bs is too low or high. How would she adjust insulin assuming she is more sensitive to insulin on days you workout?

I swim so I always have a piece of toast with peanut butter before I head out. This morning I was at 117 before and 106 when I tested after. I'm t2 not t1 which could make a difference although I just started taking insulin.

Are you on a pump or multiple daily injections? I would suggest looking a scaling back your overnight insulin rates so you wake up at a bit of a higher level. If you take long acting insulin maybe scale that back, or if you're on a pump talk to your doctor about turning down your basal rates overnight. I hope this helps!!! Andrea, what do you do when you find that what you’re eating in a meal is under 10 carbs and you’re not having anything to make it above 15g or 20g of carbs, do you just not bolus? I know
I watched Michelle Lord’s Low Carb Snacks video but still confused. What is the boundary line of the amount of carbs where u do & don’t bolus for carbs?

Hi Marina! I bolus from my pump - and can bolus for anything from 1g up, so I pretty much always bolus for anything and everything! I hope this helps answer your question! :)

I like to exercise in the morning as I'm more insulin resistant at that time, and thus able to exercise more easily without going low. And I personally like to exercise with my levels between 120-160 mg/dl. I hope this helps!

480, 26 years ago and I still remember that. My dad was diabetic too so he saw the signs fast and took me to the doc right away.
I don't remember exactly, but it was definitely in the 400's!
Same with me - my Dad (diabetic) and Mom (non- diabetic) spotted the symptoms and knew exactly what to do. I feel very lucky for this!
She's Diabetic no one in my family is diabetic(no blood relation anyway) so when i started using the restroom frequently, i said something to my mom and she said that she’ll take me to the doctor. but that never happened, so when i was diagnosed(April 9th, 2019) i was 618...oof
690 i think. maybe 700ish. i was 12 and was probably diabetic for a whole month before i got diagnosed. doctors said if i didn’t go to the hospital the day i did i would’ve died the next day. it’s been 4 years since my diagnosis
Great video again by you! I think you hit everything spot on! And I too to try not to exercise if high sugars Dr orders and I also lower background insulin at night after exercise, I sadly don't have a pump :-( but hoping for one soon :-) It can sometimes last 3 days with me but mostly 2 for sensitivities. Another thing with me I have to inject 5u after exercise to stop high spike seems like you are going to commit suicide :-) but works great for me! would not attempt this at all without a Dexcom G6 on me as I think it would be too risky Also not sure the effects on other exercises to do this as I'm sure different exercise affects us differently

How can you tell after exercising, like 2hrs, your blood sugar is still high, is that still cause by meal or cuz by over exercise. Thank you. I worked out for 40 minutes, sweating a lot, and felt a little bit tired, but after 1.5 hours I checked my blood sugar is still 200+. And it was about over 3 hours after my meal. So frustrated!
Oh gosh - I hear you - that is frustrating! It could be that exercise is actually making your blood sugar spike (some people have this experience), therefore, I would check your blood sugar throughout your workout, and try to figure out what's going on as you're exercising and then adjust food/insulin intake accordingly. I hope this helps! I know it's tricky and more than a little frustrating - but I promise - the more information you gather the easier it will be to make adjustments and achieve better control through and as a result of exercise. Hi I have a question hope you (or anybody) can help me...I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2018 (sorry I know your page is about type 1)...managed to get my a1c down from 10.8 (2018) to 5.1-5.2 in 2019-2020 so far. My morning numbers are in the mid - midhigh 80s. My 2 hours post prandials are actually in the mid-midhigh 80s also...it's just my 1 hour can get pretty high with higher carb meals (up to 35-40 grams). Without exercising it can go up to 160-180...but if I do a brisk 30-45 minutes walk i can get it down to 100-130...depending on the type of carbs (new foods/sauces usually tricky for me). So I'm just wondering if what I have is insulin resistance? Anybody could share any articles about 1 hour glucose? Since most of my searches only pull up gestational diabetes...thanks! btw i am on just one metformin 500xr per day. Tried experimenting with berberine lately to see if it can somewhat replace my metformin...
I was misdiagnosed with type 2 initially, and was put on the same metformin doses but my sugars were consistently 250-350 at any given point throughout the day. Exercise would spike it higher, but that was because I was already so high. You might already have an endocrinologist, but I was diagnosed properly with type 1 after changing my GP and seeing a specialist x

Take insulin, hydrate, and rest! That's my go to when I'm that high!
For me being a type 1 diabetic. I know my bs needs to be around 180 for a 30 min lap swim or 1 hour water aerobics. Important to eat a little protein to carry me through. BS when done is 100. Need to know your body.

Try BD ultra fine needles if using a insulin pen , check with your doctor/health care provider if you are doing something wrong , if you are to insert at 90 degrees that is perpendicular it generally is not painful .
4 times is firstly just too much times per day, make sire to change your injection as soon as you feel it spiking on your skin, otherwise problems may cause. Sometimes insulin get sharpy in 9 days or 5 days it depends. And you can also inject the insulin on your legs where you have more mass and more places.

Hey I'm 25 and been diabetic since 2018 I was on a pen untill recently I switched to a omnipod and I find it much better. Having options like Basel adjustment and getting fractions on units for bolus treatments is awesome. If you can afford it I'd highly recommend it

It is really dangerous when your sugar goès low at night.
The major problem is sometimes i know it when my sugar drops and sometimes i dont.
I had a fix two times at night and i had to be taken to hospital.
Since then i am very careful about sleeping at night. My mother really freaked out .
So be very careful guys especially when you are sleeping.

omg I feel you! And I was diagnosed almost 2 years ago as well. (Plus, I'm 23) I tried doing everything that helps with losing weight and last week I got hospitalized cuz of hypoglycemia :( anyways keep on fighting and don't lose hope! That's what I've been telling myself since the beginning of this thing.
