Saxophonist Bob Reynolds is an in-demand jazz performer, educator, and sideman, as well as a Grammy Award-winning member band Snarky Puppy. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies.
In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). In 2018 he began touring with 4-time Grammy-winning guitar legend Larry Carlton. He also released the albums Hindsight and Quartet which both landed in the top 10 of Billboard's Jazz charts. A passionate educator, he cofounded an annual summer retreat for adult saxophonists called the Inside:Outside Retreat and he's coached thousands of musicians through his Virtual Studio, a ground-breaking web-based teaching platform he built and has operated since 2010.

Hey Bob, I was re-watching one of your older vlogs about you trying to find a new sax case and I was just wondering if you have heard of Hiscox cases. They are Walt Johnson-esque type of cases that have stronger latches and can fit accessories than the bam cases.

If i could be given another life and got to choose what type of brain I could I have, I would choose the brain of a musician. This process fascinates me.
Also on a side note @BobReynolds: I had the pleasure of being at the Brooklyn Steel show from last years tour. The show was phenomenal! I recall going to buy some records and merchandise and some of the band mates start coming out slowly to talk to the crowd that was still there. You came out Bob and I was so stuck on the idea of meeting my guitar idol, Mark Lettieri, that all I could muster when I met you was “hey Bob, you know if Mark will be coming out?” You were slightly taken aback and I was just completely out of it. I got to meet mark and he signed one of my vinyl sleeves and I was star struck for the first time in my life. To this day I still have those cringe moments while showering where your brain just shuts off and you blurt out some unintelligible noise from the memory of how embarrassing a memory can be. Dude you rock.
Side note # 2: you signed my vinyl insert as well. You’re a class act!

Had tickets to the show in Tulsa last year. Was on call and didn’t get out the office until after seven. One of the next tour stops was in Dublin. The only thing that stopped me from flying to Dublin to make that date was my wife’s *strong* NO. I’m telling ya though - after this Covid thing is over, I’m doing it, no matter the location!
I've been listening to Semente trying to cope with the fact the mixing and mastering of this track is just "alien technology" it sounds absolutely incredible. I have no idea what this genre is but I love the way it sounds. That guy at the mixer knows what he's doing. Great job guys, new fan here!
I saw you guys the very next day from the Royal Albert Hall gig in Manchester. I’m pretty sure it was your last gig of the year with Snarky, Bob. My dad who was with me is a trumpet player and his mind exploded when he heard the Snarky horns for the first time. You guys are still so inspirational in my own music. I hear ya. Unfortunately this isn't a video-crew production. Just little 'ol me with my camera, which means it tends to be where I am...which was in a room far away from the rhythm section most of the time. Parts 1 and 2 have a tad more.

Interesting to see how you work in such a beautiful way in a diverse group :)
On a personal view, it's nice to see how, having grown up in lands where gnawa music was present around, in my evolution of musical inclinations these rhythms reappear and come together from the hand of one of my current favorite band such as Snarky Puppy. So it was quite an experience to live those moments in Essaouira in 2018, great and unforgettable moments!

Seems strange to not have the music ahead of going to the studio with it. Is it because you’re all at such a high level that you don’t have to see it ahead of time? Would that be a waste of time? I guess a lot of it is probably being written or changed on the spot, which makes sense.
The track at 16:05 did it get cut from the album? Or was it just a sound check? Sounded pretty nice.

I currently only have one Snarky Puppy CD ("We Like it Here"), but I'm sure I will add more at some point; it's a great band. I was unaware of the album "Immigrance" or the fact that it came out in 2019. Thus when I initially saw the date this video was posted (Nov. 6, 2020), I thought this was a current project. I started to freak out a little: what no masks?? At least distance yourselves!! Is everyone tested?? Yikes!! Then I figured out that this was recorded in "The Before Times". Never mind!

Why don't you guys use charts? It seems crazy to do everything through logic demos rather than write some lead sheets or something.
My thoughts. A rough chart so you don’t have to memorize everything.
They don't use charts because they want to have everything memorized. This gives the band flexibility when on tour... they are able to swap members on every instrument anywhere in the tour schedule and no one misses a beat since they all know their own parts, plus they can fill in on another instrument's parts with minimal practice. Also, everyone can constantly have their ears open and listen to the other parts.
It still blows my mind, but Micheal League did this on purpose for the first years of the band, sending demos where all the parts are played by the same synth and no in-depth descriptions as to who is playing which part. Everyone learned every part and only at the recording session did Micheal then reveal who played what.🤯
ˆˆˆWhat Dennis said.ˆˆˆ Plus, as long as your eyes are on a chart your ears and mind can never be fully open to all the music going on around you. There's a stratosphere of details from articulation to inflections to dynamics that could never be conveyed in sheet music. It's about listening to those right next to you, behind you, and across the stage from you. Learning the music by ear (btw, the same way Monk taught all his musicians his tunes), you do the heavy lifting up front and reap the benefits forever thereafter. Highly recommended.

A lot of equip, a lot of time and money, a lot of good musicians, a lot of brain storming to come up with music that misses the primary goal of.............. being pleasant to listen to. This band is not pleasant to listen to. Abstract chord structure, annoying dissonant melody lines all for the sake of "being unique". Being unique doesn't make music. Sound that is pleasant to listen to makes music.
To Mike King- I have one of their CDs from several years ago called "We Like it Here", which has some great stuff and even though some of it is complex I would call it accessible and exciting. Besides that one album, I've only heard a little of their music, but I'm looking forward to hearing more (so much music out there, I can't hear it all). That being said, of what I've heard, there's very little that's totally "outside" and most of it is pretty darn catchy (to me) despite some complicated poly meters and "spicy" chord progressions. Anyway, it all boils down to taste and what you're accustomed to and what you're interested in exploring. My tastes are pretty wide ranging. But, as always, "to each his or her own". I don't like to argue about musical taste (although I did when I was younger) but just accept that we all are wired differently.
