Thank you , thanks and many thanks ! Great video - good to know what ports to open and not open - security is top priority these days I've been looking for a straight forward guide om how to do this for a while - the Unifi site overloads you with information. In the end it was as simple as demonstrated in your video - very grateful to you -thanks for the upload.
Willie, As to the L3 adoption, adding a cname record, UNIFI.local.domain --> into the client site DNS will quickly achieve the L3 adoption ability without having to manually set the inform via SSH.
I have a very weird situation on my Windows workstation; UK region, and US keyboard layout ... to make dates and times display properly. LOL. Watching that made me think of that.
What sort of Syno are you running the virtualisation on? Intuitively I would be sceptical as to the processor and ram on any but the highest end Synos being enough to run as a hypervisor?
First I would like to thank you for this video. I realize it was made quite some time ago. I followed it step by step but seem to loose you at the end. I am new to Linux but followed each step. The unifi software does not seem to be finishing the install. I went passed the point of the error you explained but it never seems to finish installing.
Damn it Willie! I've been working with FreeNAS now for a couple a years expecting to do what your doing with Synology (had never heard of it before). The FreeNAS folks are pretty slow with their bhyve virtualization - so I ended up looking at ProMox for that part of it, but what I wanted is a single NAS/FileServer to drop into a remote facility where I can run a virtual DC, and provide storage and backup with a simple single box. What kind of synology boxes do you deploy? Might have to get one and start experimenting with it! Thanks for another great video!
Not sure how this was working before ... I used to have a controller on my own hardware (on my dying PowerEdge T110, to be exact), and somehow that was on top of Windows which was also hosting Hyper-V. It's no longer available as a piece of installable software anymore, then? Also, just as a side note, PuTTY is no longer necessary; Windows has a native SSH client via OpenSSH; Choco install openssh.
Love your videos and this walk through was great for getting unfi on a Ubuntu VM. i had issues getting mine up and running so i redid the whole setup following your video step by step and still couldn't get the controller to start so after some digging and figuring out how to stat it manually i found i was getting the following error (Cannot locate Java Home) got that running " sudo /usr/lib/unifi/bin/unifi.init start" so it looks like java wasn't installed i fixed the issue by doing the following command sudo apt-get install default-jre -y just wanted to post in case anyone else was having issues. not sure if things changed since you did this ... thanks again
I use docker as I don't have virtualmanager on my DS716+. I use jacobalberty/unifi image. Even without experience with Docker and with the help of some forum posts i was able to get it to run. Hasn't give me any problems.
Willie YOU R THE BEST!!!!! p.s Can u teach us how to install mail server so we dont have to use CORPORATE hotmail or Google spy email services? I run my own with synology. Work greate just slow it takes around 10 min to get the mail scanned check for viruses and then deliver to end user. I use static ip on DSL. I love the way i have my emails, i can have Unlimite email addresses, Unlimite Domain Subdomain and Storage space LOL Synology THIS IS AWESOME, insane the power we have if u know computers now days. Willie is it possible to run mail server with Dynamic IP? what about reverse DNS? will this work? Thx once again u Kris from Crosstalk , THE BEST UBIQUITI , IT CHANNELS!!!!
Nope, just use the platform you are most familiar with. There are several UniFi Docker images to choose from, but almost all are going to be Linux based. The Docker host can be whatever OS (*nix, Windows, MacOS)
I'm going to have to ask people about that. Not sure why my friend bothered to waste money on a Cloud Key when we could have just hosted Docker on one of our existing units.
Thank you , thanks and many thanks !

Landscape is free for on prem, and less than 10 machines. Makes managing a bunch of Ubuntu installs easy

Thank you so much Willie, this is exactly what I wanted, I even have a synology NAS

What is the mongodb port for unifi?

Yes, I watched the rest of your Synology videos and got that - thanks! Great video and looks much simpler than what I been messing with!
Excellent video as always Willie. :-)
Thank you ! Subscribed and following. New to Unifi stuff and you are doing a great job !!

What about doing this in Docker? Which would be better?
Thanks for your videos. I have my unifi controller on proxmox lxc. Can you help me on how I can have the dns server like you have on synology ?
Awesome vid Wil
Thanks Willie! Learned a lot as usual. Does Unifi run any better (or worse) under Docker? Any concerns running it that way?

you should watch threatwire.. Docker was heavily compromised there are a bunch of packages running malicious code FYI ..

Why going through all the trouble installing Ubuntu?? Why not use Docker?
I would ask the same thing.
I run mine via Docker. That's what I recommend for Syno installs.
Derek Schartung does it matter what operating system that's running on?
