  • January 25, 1996 - The biggest surprise here is not the fact that Terry Mills scored 23 points in 25 minutes in a 93-92 win over the Dallas Mavericks. It's that he did so without a single 3-pointer. By 1997, Mills bad developed into the league's most voluminous 3-point shooting center. And by that, I am referencing the number of 3-pointers upon which Mills connected, not any sort of reference to his literal size, unless we're talking about his height... which I am, but in concert with his 3-point shooting prowess.
Anyway, Mills finished 10th in the NBA in 3-pointers made during the 1996-97 season (175) and eighth in 3-pointer percentage (.422).
Here's the box score for the game above, which was actually from the season prior to the statistics referenced in the paragraph prior: www.basketball-reference.com/...

As a kid in this era ( and huge Pistons fan) i always wondered why they didn't use Mills more efficiently. His 3-pt shooting was clearly having an effect against opponents yet the coaches wouldn't play to his strengths or set up the roster accordingly. He'd be a very valuable player in today's NBA.

The Mavs were so bad in this era. And they really shouldnt have been if you look at the roster-but the court looks great. Also gotta love that PA guy. Doesnt get more monotone than that

That Pistons team had talent, just not the guard play they needed to contend.

Terry Mills: He was 'honey-bun' or 'sandwich' or 'milk-dud' or 'sweat' because if this man could have just stayed in shape, lifted weights, and simply took his job seriously, he could have been one of the top players at his position but those snacks always get you, it's the snacks .... Mills had a post game, 3-point game, mid-range game, and he could handle the ball well -- he was a terrible rebounding player for his position but he was tough, he just didn't know how to manage his own self-control off the court with those thanksgiving dinners before the game -- he'll work it off during the game, it doesn't work that way, but that was some good eatin'.
I just wish that guys like Terry Mills and William Bedford could have worked out for the Pistons because those guys were gifted, just needed that toughness to want to dive in and get hit, hit other players, take the physical punishment and stay working out in the gym and both could have had better careers ..... They replaced John Salley with Terry Mills, could have had both in the game in 1992-93 but they got rid of Salley.
'92-'93: Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman, Mark Aguirre, Orlando Woolridge, Olden Polynice and Terry Mills -- you add John Salley to that group, you have a front court that can actually compete for a title .... so yet again, another way for the Bulls to win and keep winning.
