Interesting observation, dear Andrea. I can see these creatures every day in the garden, but never thought their behavior is quite interesting. Next time I’ll pay more attention to them! Have a lovely week, L&G

They will be thankful for sure, dear L&G! They do a great job in the field because it seems that they remove heavy metals from the ground. The soil also seems richer where they are. Have a lovely week You too dear L&G!

Hello dear Andrea, this is a very special and beautiful video that you filmed of this Armadillidium vulgare. I watched twice because it is really beautiful to study these buggs .I don't have such a good camera to film them up close. Quite interesting to study this. Don't think this was a mating ritual. Because with the reproductive process, normally the males climb on the backs of the females to inject their sperm into the female genitalia. Females have two genital openings on the abdominal side and males have also two penises. Mating thus takes place in two phases on either side of the female. If the male is on top, as in your video, he cannot reach this female's openings. So I guess this isn't a mating ritual. I think it's more that the female inspects the substance that the male excretes and then perhaps mates with him later. Perhaps this was an exploration of the female body by the male which may be than later followed by mounting the female's dorsal surface. And is here that the female perhaps refused to mate with him. Also beautiful to hear the sound of the cuckoo.
These fascinating creatures play an essential role in breaking down organic matter, converting decaying material into valuable nutrients for soil and plants. And the fact that you have a lot of them is also a good sign. It is a good natural solution for breaking down waste materials and recycling nutrients in the ecosystem. In some cases they may feed on young seedlings, tender roots and ripening fruit. But for me they remain special crustaceans. Because you probably also knew that they also eat their own feces. So they are clean too. It was also a nice sight to see the little ones and also that this one rolls up. It was interesting and beautiful, dear Andrea. Thank you very much for sharing and I wish you and your family many pleasant days. 👍12👌

Thank You so much dear Tine for Your extra detailed comment and Your deep interest! Yes, I read how they reproduce before posting this video but I suppose that this behavior is related to reproduction possibly being the first step of making the female accept the male partner. Unfortunately I was too busy and I could not check what happened afterwards so my observation is absolutely uncomplete. What You wrote can be true as well, if this female behavior means to just block the male from going further.
Regarding their role, their ability I like the most is that of removing heavy metals from the soil, and I forgive them if they damage some seedling! ^ ^
Thank You dear Tine! Abbracci dal Giappone!
