Dude wtf, 2 hour marathon is running 13 mph for 2 hours. An average person that's starting in cycling with a nice bike would probably average about 15 mph on a BIKE. The every day person riding a bike would probably average 12-13 mph on a BIKE. He did that on his feet running. That's insane.
As an experiment I measured out 422 metres and tried to clear it in 72 seconds. Felt crazy fast powering along, but was well short of the time.... the thought of going that fast, or faster, for two hours... it's just astonishing!
I think another trick to add to this experiment would be to unleash a wild animal like a lion or bear after him the last quarter mile of the race and I would guarantee you he would've gone under 2 hours.

I wonder if this will impact running like the full body fast suits impacted olympic swimming at the Beijing Olympics. The suits were actually banned because they worked so well.
MotherEric those swimsuits actually caused supercavitation, as in they displaced water and surrounded swimmers in a thin layer of air. As long as the shoes doesn't increase the runner's strength or change air pressure, it will be fine.
I know the whole pressure/fluid dynamics thing is different, but what about the "springiness" of the internal plates of the shoes for lack of a better word?
I think the suits also impacted buoyancy. And the compressive areas around muscle groups were stroke specific meaning the suits were only used for one type of races (i.e freestyle or breaststroke not both). It really is an interesting read if you have the time.
MotherEric springiness in shoes can't compare with the springiness in an actual foot. There's a reason that Nike/Adidas/Saucony, etc always endorse Kenyan runners: because the Kenyans have been running barefoot since birth.
Jack Robinson 120/26=~4.62, 0.62*60=37.2, so I actually highballed it as the average mile time would need to be 4:37.2 Edit: Actually lowballed it, but only by 3 seconds. My bad.

He finally did it! Eliud beat the 2 hour time! I'm not even a runner and I was ecstatic when I read the news. He had such a great a attitude when he missed it here, and two years later, he makes history. This is the stuff of movies!
The needed more than 3 athletes trying to break 2. On race day A LOT can go wrong. You can have the science down but the athletes body may just not have it on the day of. If they had a group of 9-12 trying to break 2 I believe they would have been able to accomplish it.
Alexis Romero they only used three runners because there aren't enough runners who would ever be capable of a sub two marathon, they would be a waste of time and money to train with.
Would also be a lot harder to get the same levels of aerodynamics with a pack of runners that size, maybe if they'd ran several tests with 3 different runners each time but it was probably awfully expensive to train just 3 never mind quadrupling the budget to train 12
Donna S there are many more athletes that are capable of it. But on the day of, like I said, a lot can go wrong. I'm sure now that they know what they need to do, they'll give it another shot but with more athletes. Either that or keep on trying with different groups of 3. To be completely honest tho, money isn't an issue with Nike.. they have all the funds. And now that all the experimenting is done (with the Vaporfly 4%) that's funds now available to train the athletes.
Eliud Kipchoge is probably the fastest marathon runner in the world. It's doubtful anyone could have run faster than him on that day. Dennis Kimetto and Emmanuel Mutai were close to Kipchoge, but on the decline by the time Breaking 2 was launched. Wilson Kiprotich and a few others probably could have been close, but drafting and giving supplies for more than 3 guys would be difficult. Though I'm not sure why they picked Lelisa Desisa for the project. He's amazing but there's definitely a few guys faster than him.
These are the relevant factors below in order of importance. They didn't mention red blood cell count or physique which are much more important than shoes which rate dead last in importance. 1- Athlete (skill, physique, experience, training) 2- Health (nutrition, rest, red blood cell count) 3- conditions (temperature, humidity, course difficulty) 4- shoes.
Kirk Meyers technically yes but the racetrack meant that they could provide a lot more consistent nutrition/hydration and pacers throughout the course... aswell as the fact that would of had to find a 26 mile straight stretch of road that was as flat as the track that fell in a region with the desirable temperature and that could be closed for the day to allow for the experiment to take place... Monza is a generally pretty long flowing track in terms of corners which would mean the speed difference into the corners will be negligible compared to if they were tight bends..
