      I really doubt anything like this

    • @davidwu4247
      @davidwu4247 7 лет назад +38

      MotherEric those swimsuits actually caused supercavitation, as in they displaced water and surrounded swimmers in a thin layer of air. As long as the shoes doesn't increase the runner's strength or change air pressure, it will be fine.

    • @mothereric8774
      @mothereric8774 7 лет назад +11

      I know the whole pressure/fluid dynamics thing is different, but what about the "springiness" of the internal plates of the shoes for lack of a better word?

    • @mothereric8774
      @mothereric8774 7 лет назад +12

      I think the suits also impacted buoyancy. And the compressive areas around muscle groups were stroke specific meaning the suits were only used for one type of races (i.e freestyle or breaststroke not both). It really is an interesting read if you have the time.

    • @lvbuckeye
      @lvbuckeye 7 лет назад +22

      MotherEric springiness in shoes can't compare with the springiness in an actual foot. There's a reason that Nike/Adidas/Saucony, etc always endorse Kenyan runners: because the Kenyans have been running barefoot since birth.

    The needed more than 3 athletes trying to break 2. On race day A LOT can go wrong. You can have the science down but the athletes body may just not have it on the day of. If they had a group of 9-12 trying to break 2 I believe they would have been able to accomplish it.

    • @donnas7240
      @donnas7240 7 лет назад +173

      Alexis Romero they only used three runners because there aren't enough runners who would ever be capable of a sub two marathon, they would be a waste of time and money to train with.

    • @johnrichy2k6
      @johnrichy2k6 7 лет назад +22

      Would also be a lot harder to get the same levels of aerodynamics with a pack of runners that size, maybe if they'd ran several tests with 3 different runners each time but it was probably awfully expensive to train just 3 never mind quadrupling the budget to train 12

    • @alexisromero3414
      @alexisromero3414 7 лет назад +5

      Donna S there are many more athletes that are capable of it. But on the day of, like I said, a lot can go wrong. I'm sure now that they know what they need to do, they'll give it another shot but with more athletes. Either that or keep on trying with different groups of 3. To be completely honest tho, money isn't an issue with Nike.. they have all the funds. And now that all the experimenting is done (with the Vaporfly 4%) that's funds now available to train the athletes.

      Eliud Kipchoge is probably the fastest marathon runner in the world. It's doubtful anyone could have run faster than him on that day. Dennis Kimetto and Emmanuel Mutai were close to Kipchoge, but on the decline by the time Breaking 2 was launched. Wilson Kiprotich and a few others probably could have been close, but drafting and giving supplies for more than 3 guys would be difficult. Though I'm not sure why they picked Lelisa Desisa for the project. He's amazing but there's definitely a few guys faster than him.

      Kirk Meyers technically yes but the racetrack meant that they could provide a lot more consistent nutrition/hydration and pacers throughout the course... aswell as the fact that would of had to find a 26 mile straight stretch of road that was as flat as the track that fell in a region with the desirable temperature and that could be closed for the day to allow for the experiment to take place... Monza is a generally pretty long flowing track in terms of corners which would mean the speed difference into the corners will be negligible compared to if they were tight bends..

      that would be a different shoe, or atleast it would be percieved as such. what I am saying is that the two hour mark means nothing to nike unless some fundamental prerequisites are in place.

  • @AntiChangeling
    @AntiChangeling 7 лет назад +212

    I didn't even notice I was watching this so soon after it was uploaded.
    Having said that, the title is slightly clickbaity. The shoes didn't seem to be the main factor in the breakthrough - the pacing formation and co-op drafting were.

    • @EpicSpiderWizard
      @EpicSpiderWizard 7 лет назад +29

      AntiChangeling the shoes arent even mentioned in the title

    • @AntiChangeling
      @AntiChangeling 7 лет назад +3

      +BROKN Well, Nike is. It's a true title, but I'm pretty sure that people aren't thinking of force-measuring treadmills and specialised pacing and drafting formation testing when they see Nike - they're thinking of shoes.

    • @AGoldSoldier
      @AGoldSoldier 7 лет назад +24

      Well, that can't be helped. Nike did the research regardless of whether people think of their stuff when mentioned

    • @Mistyrious
      @Mistyrious 7 лет назад +29

      I think having Nike in the title is justified, seeing as they are the ones spending money in this program, developing shoes, training the athletes, etc. The shoes definitely aren't their only - or even main - contribution.

    Even with all the advancements in technology and nutrition, no one has been able to break the 2 hr barrier. This tells me the determining factor in doing this has to be mental. It takes a particular psychological advantage to overcome the final obstacle in accomplishing this incredible feat.

    The study design is poor: They should have somehow covered the shoes so that the runner doesn't know which shoe he is wearing. The 4% could be easily placebo effect!

    I don't think 4% in efficiency means a 4% increase in speed. A lot of people think that you'll be faster if you put on the Vaporfly 4%, but I believe Nike was trying to say that it will cost you 4% less energy to run with them on. A runner's speed does not increase in a linear relationship with the energy used, so a runner with 4% more energy conserved doesn't make him 4% faster over a marathon, but it definitely helps some, as shown by Eliud's performance.
