    Floyd flew a recording assistant from England to the United States, to make that phone call to the studio, so they could record it.

    • @russcoash6710
      @russcoash6710 2 года назад +10

      It is told that the recorded a real phone operator. From wikipedia: The end of the song is a segment of dialogue between Pink and a telephone operator, as Pink twice attempts to place a transatlantic collect call to his wife. A man answers, and when the operator asks if he will accept the charges, the man simply hangs up. This is how Pink learns that his wife is cheating on him. ("See, he keeps hanging up," says the operator. "And it's a man answering!") With this betrayal, his mental breakdown accelerates.
      The dialogue with the operator was the result of an arrangement co-producer James Guthrie made with a neighbour in London, Chris Fitzmorris,[7] while the album was being recorded in Los Angeles. He wanted realism, for the operator to actually believe they had caught his wife having an affair, and so didn't inform her she was being recorded. The operator heard in the recording is the second operator they tried the routine with, after the first operator's reaction was deemed unsatisfactory.[8]
      Film version
      In the film, the scene with the attempted phone call, in which Pink learns his wife is cheating on him, occurs at the very beginning of the song "What Shall We Do Now", which is the extended version of "Empty Spaces", before the "Young Lust" song rather than at the end of the "Young Lust" song. The implications of the song are therefore slightly different. On the album, he is already unfaithful to his wife while on tour, making him a hypocrite when he is appalled at her own unfaithfulness. In the film, he is only seen with a groupie after he learns of his wife's affair, which shows the character in a more sympathetic light.

    Y'all need to listen to the entire album in one sitting. Like you mentioned, its a story. The songs blend into each other. I can't stress enough how much more significant and powerful Pink Floyd's albums are when appreciated in their entirety. Their albums are not just a collection of individual songs at least not the major ones that come to mind. The Wall, Darkside of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and Animals are masterpieces that are best appreciated as the single piece of art each one of them is. It would be great to see y'all react to an entire album of one of the mentioned in a single sitting. Whether you do so for youtube or not I implore you guys to listen to these albums as the concepts they were created to be. Trust me, you will not be dissapointed. My personal favorite is The Wall, but I love all of them.

      Lots of people understood the album during the years between the album's release and the release of the movie. The movie didn't really bring new insight, but it did give us another version of a song that didn't make it on the album (When the Tigers Broke Free).
      If you rejoin the two halves of Roger Waters' spoken line "Isn't this where we came in?" the album effectively becomes a continuous loop.

    The Wall is an album that sucks you in and holds it's grip on you until the final note. I remember sitting at home alone one night listening to this album, lights out with the volume at "11". Hey You was playing and Richard Wright was emulating the worms eating into Pink's brain with his masterful key work. The room was pitch black, but somehow I saw a shadow in the form of a person, move towards the stereo. In my mind, I thought the person or persona was going to turn the volume down, and I shouted out NO!! After realizing I was still alone in the dark and no one was messing with my private listening party, I couldn't help but laugh aloud at myself. I then melted back into the couch and finished grooving on one of the greatest albums of all time. ✌️

    the album the wall tells a story with the lyrics. each song is like a chapter in a book. if you listen to the songs out of order it doesn't make sense. you have to listen to the record from front to back in order to understand.

    The dude "Pink" is calling his wife, or partner, from the United States where is presumably on tour. And some other dude is answering the phone instead of his partner. Like a lot of the concepts on this album, it's always hard to tell what is actually happening and what is in his head.

    The songs all connect, in the most incredible rock opera ever...
    It's so different from everything, even other Floyd albums.
    There's four "record sides" from the original vinyl.

    All of the songs from "The Wall" have to be heard in sequence, as they tell a story of a person experiencing a Dystopian conversion similar to George Orwell's '1984'.

    A lot of big Pink Floyd fans will tell you their favorite song is "Echoes" off of the album Meddle (the studio version). It's like 25 minutes long, so you'd probably have to settle for editing out some of the trippy middle part. But it captures the end of their early psychedelic vibe before they started producing themed albums -- which are great, but more "serious" (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall). Echoes is their most enjoyable song, according to many. More of a sonic experience than a song.

    You need to WATCH THE ENTIRE MOVIE - The Wall (not just the Album).
    Unless you watch the movie, you only get about 1/3rd of the meanings of the songs from this Masterpiece Album.

    Regarding that bit at the end, that is the voice of the telephone company operator assisting with an overseas call -- from the US to the UK -- "a collect call for Mrs. Floyd from Mister Floyd. Will you accept the charges from United States?" The telephone system was completely different back when this album was released. Long distance calls could be a pain to make, especially overseas calls made collect, that is, where the receiver must accept the charges for the call to go through in contrast to the sender paying for them up front or on the bill later. Long distance calls could also get very expensive very quickly. The takeaway is that Mister Floyd is in the US and lacks enough money to call home to Mrs. Floyd in England, but she ain't picking up...

    • @br0nzepen
      @br0nzepen 2 года назад

      It’s not that she isn’t picking up but like the operator says, “it’s a man answering” giving the impression that Mrs. Floyd is having an affair.

    Brad and Lex, I will echo many others here who have already recommended: you should watch "The Wall" as a movie. Listen to it all the way through as an album if you want to, but definitely watch it as a movie. This album was made in 1979 (IIRC) and was intended from the beginning to be a soundtrack to a film, but the band didn't get around to making the movie until 1982. Both the album and the movie tell the story of the artist (drawn from autobiographical elements and influences by other musicians).
    I have always felt like "The Wall" is at least in part a love letter of sorts to their former bandmate Syd Barrett, who was forced to quit the band as a result of his uncontrolled abuse of LSD and other powerful mind-altering drugs. I don't know that Roger Waters has ever mentioned that Syd was specifically an influence on the album, but it seems like he haunts many of the songs and lyrical passages.

  • @BlueBarchetta67
    @BlueBarchetta67 2 года назад

    It's one chapter from a whole story, and to understand it all you have tp listen to the album, or watch the film from start to finish. The film is a masterpiece, as is the album, but the film will take you on an amazing journey.

    Pink Floyd is British - in the wall the song is about a guy in a band and he is on the road with all these groupies and parties and stuff, and he is calling like his wife or something back in the US during that part where you hear the operator

  • @rockytopted6337
    @rockytopted6337 2 года назад

    For some clarity regarding the phone call at the end...the song is being sung by Pink, the main character in the album/movie. Pink is a superstar musician and is currently out on the road touring in the US. In the song/movie, Pink hooks up with a "groupie" type lady after a show. The irony is that some time later Pink calls home to speak to his wife...but she is there with another man, who keeps hanging up on the operator.
    Not sure if you have a subscription to HBO Max or not but The Wall is available to watch there.

    Every time you listen to a single track from The Wall, many questions arise (Why is he calling the United States? Why does he want a dirty girl?...). If you listen to the whole album, you will get all the answers. It's a concept album that tells a story made up of individual songs that build on each other. Have you listened to some of the songs on this album (Comfortably Numb, Mother, Hey You, Another Brick in the Wall) and always wondered about the meaning of the song.... Close the curtains, pour yourself a nice glass of red wine, put on your headphones and take a journey through the story of "Pink" from birth to adulthood. You'll discover just how powerful a story it is...

      @@lubos1207 My apparently unfound comment post in these video comments is a copy paste of the phone fiasco part of the lyrics at the end. "Hello?
      Yes, a collect call for Mrs. Floyd from Mister Floyd. Will you accept the charges from United States? Oh, he hung up, that's your residence, right? I wonder why he hung up? Is there supposed to be someone else there besides your wife there to answer? Hello? This is United States calling, are we reaching... See he keeps hanging up, and it's a man answering."

    Mans voice answers the phone, "Hello". Operator "Collect call from Mr. Floyd to Mrs. Floyd will you accept". Hangs up. Operator says "sounds like a man answering, must be someone there besides your wife". The whole scene is just another brick in the wall, just another life event that sends him closer to a break down where he builds a metaphoric wall to keep everyone out. As everyone said before me, watch the movie, it's a masterpiece.
