- The Global Wrestling Alliance was a wrestling promotion based out of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area. This episode was filmed at the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, FL.
This episode features the following:
Bobby Brooks w/ Rebecca Rockwell Vs. "Soulman" Alex G
Report by Patrick Shaeffer
El Tigre & Dave Perry Vs. Dean & Joe Malenko w/ The Great Malenko
Tank Mascutto Vs. Cousin Junior
Dr. Red Roberts & Rusty Brooks Vs. John Harris & Del Apollo
J.J. Pallo Vs. Adrian Street
I used to live in Hollywood, FL during the mid to late 80's. I used to tune in every Saturday to see what was going to happen. I mostly tuned in to cheer for my neighbor who lived across the street from me, Kurt Koski (AKA Rusty Brooks). While I don't remember every wrestler, the ones I remember from back then were
"Soulman" Alex G
Steve "The Party Animal" Collins
"Ram Man" Johnny Evans
Jumbo Baretta
The Malenko Brothers (Joe & Dean)
Tom "The Punisher" Nash
"Lord" Norman Smiley
The tag team known as Death Row (I don't remember the team member's names)
As a 9-year old kid, I used to love watching this show. It makes me wish that there were more televised independent wrestling promotions out there today.
The production for this is incredibly crisp for a smaller fed. Thanks for the post!
Did the show either had a feature match/main event?
@@tonyarceneaux286 I'm not sure, myself. Anyone else know?
For a small promotion. This is shot extremely well and for that time period, this is very much ahead of it’s time.
Tell that to their investors who went belly up. This looks no better than a 70s boxing match special. What you’re not grasping is that every promoter, during this era, with the exception of McMahon, was stuck in a by gone decade. If you switched over to MTV in 87, this may have even looked like it was from the late 60s.
Wow, can't believe that so many people upvoted your comment. How was it "very much ahead of its time"? This was 1987, World Class had been doing this type of presentation/production for years, and most importantly WWF had set the standard a good 2 years previously with Saturday Night's Main-event on NBC. Absolutely nothing about this broadcast was "ahead of its time", it was just following the trend started by much better promotions years earlier. 🙄
I'm not shocked. The comment was simple. But did you just compare a small promotion based out of a section of Florida to the production quality of NBC / WWF's SNME? Them setting the standard sure put the heat on JCP and AWA. I'm sure the production team that put this together was very happy with the finished product.
@The Diamond Yes the production was alright, but it definitely wasn't "ahead of its time" at all. That's the part of your comment that isn't correct. Even a dying AWA had this type of production, and a bunch regional promotions did as well (like Gino Brito's Montreal territory, or Watts' UWF, Memphis, so on). So yeah it looked alright for a very small promotion, but there's nothing groundbreaking or "ahead of its time" about it at all. Good day to you.
Hey, just wondering if you wanted to talk wrestling, because of your comment? Can you let us know where we can meet you? Everyone is impressed with your knowledge where can we meet you?
Rusty Brooks, Bob Cook, Adrian Street, Norman Smiley and the Malenkos...great fun. Dr. Red Roberts seems a hoot as well.
Steve Collins, Soul Patrol, Death Row, COL Kirchner, G.I. Joe Palardy, VC Minh
I know Dean Malenko from WCW.
@@FrankAndrews I ask people about this wrestling promotion. Do you know anything about it?
I think Malenko is deserving of a WWE Legacy induction.. Never won the big one, nor known as major trendsetter, but tremendous worker, and a heck of a Cruiserweight and US champion in WCW..
He also won titles in WWE.
Never a major trendsetter?
His career from 1994-1996 says hello.
Norman smiley was a damn good wrestler and even greater trainer. The good old days!
This show was a blast to watch!! A flashback to a much simpler time when pro wrestling was done RIGHT!!
Done right 😂
Most of these wrestlers in this wrestling promotion would be jobbers in WWE & AEW.
@@tonyarceneaux286 Yeah sure buddy. You don't know anything about this company at all. So go back to your basement and watch Peacock.
I remember going to their TV tapings as a teenager!
Growing up during this time period there was a lot more wrestling to watch on TV.The independent shows gave us an alternative to the showboat style of the WWF and something different to watch outside of JCP/NWA/WCW and the AWA.
This looks like a good promotion. I love the promos that feature poolsides, backstages, street scenes etc i think it adds lil more entertainment value to wrestling.
Rest in Peace 🙏 🪦 Super Star 🌟 Billy Graham Pass away 😢 79
Good riddance.
Don't Like Super Star Billy Graham?
@@rogermurray5582 In real life he was an absolute scumbag. He only liked you if you gave him money. Look at his rows with WWE and the Cauliflower Alley Club. He was only happy with them if they were paying him. And what he did to Pat Patterson was unforgivable. He later admitted that he lied about him, but the damage was obviously done....just look at any comments section on Patterson today.
Sweet, #SCM Squared Circle Maniacs ❤ 🎉🎉🎉😊😊
This is a gem thank you
I never heard of this wrestling promotion untill today.
In the uk they used to show wwf wrestling challenge at 2am each week. Then it suddenly stopped and was replaced with stuff like this
I remember those days. This. Icw the savaldi stuff. Pwf from florida with big steel man, dusty, funk etc on. Great times on late night ITV
@@hcwchampionshipwrestling4765 Never saw it on ITV. I saw this, mid 1980's ICW & 1982 WCCW on Lifestyle channel in 1989/1990. Remember WCW used to air late at night on Saturdays/early Sunday's on ITV in 1990-would tape it & watch it on Sunday morning.
Soulman doing the Pee Wee herman dance made my day. lol
Dean Malenko pre WCW!
Pre ECW as well. Although I would say between runs in All Japan Pro Wrestling, New Japan Pro Wrestling and other Promotions.
I LOVED this promotion when it was on my ESPN affiliate. Red Roberts was the prototype for the smart heel that you couldn’t wait to see get beaten up.
I forgot Norman Smiley ☺️ was in this wrestling promotion too.
Bobby Brooks and Brian Knobbs look really similar
That was cool to see I was part of those first TV tapings as Shark Murphy do you have anymore of these shows as I've never seen any even from back when they were first taped..
I wish I did. I bought the episode on a DVD format from a website that I stumbled onto. The site had other local promotions that had televised matches, but that was the only GWA episode listed. I didn't start watch till later in its run, but it was awesome to see.
How much did tickets cost?
Hopefully you didnt buy anything from Cousin Jr.
I have a bunch but don’t share them with fans of anti American Jane Fonda
Bob Cook???
I don't think the crowd was considering the Malenkos as heels here.
More fans than awa had in seats then
The Malenkos were awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Should be one of the best wresling families ever.
This was on once a week in the middle of the afternoon in Oklahoma. Horrible time slot, but some good wrestling, with several people from UWF and WCCW competing.
Yes i remember. Awful awful timeslotting. Middle of the afternoon (when adults are at work and kids /teens at school). And worse, once a week.
Look at how damn young Norman Smiley is here (wrestling under his Black Magic gimmick).
If I remember correctly, that was under his Lord Norman gimmick. The Lord Norman character struck me as a very well dignified character. He was also entertaining.
@@bigbossman2810 Was definitely Black Magic. You can hear it around 12:22 when the "President" is announcing trams for their tag tournament. Smiley is teaming up with one of his trainers, "Jamaican Jammer" Bobby Wales.
Always heard about Adrian Street and Ms. Linda and seen them in wrestling magazines but never actually seen him wrestle.
Legendary
I'd long wondered where Patrick Shaeffer, who replaced Gordon Solie on "Pro Wrestling This Week", had come from.
This was awesome treasure that I found in a video rabbit hole. 1st two names I recognized was all the Malenkos & Adrian Street...who were the commentary team at this event?
:UPDATE: Make that 3 names, Cousin Junior
Commentators were former journeyman wrestler/enhancement talent Joe Mascara on play-by-play, and on color was Craig Worthing, an icon of southern Florida Radio broadcasting.
You may also recognize Rusty Brooks if you watch WWF squash matches from the late 1980's, and early 1990's. Alex G went on to become a trainer, with his most famous protege being MVP. JJ Pallo was the son of British Wrestling legend, Mr. TV Jackie Pallo. I believe Bob Roop, amateur wrestling great, former Olympian, and long-time Kevin Sullivan lackey was the booker for this promotiion
I remember when a this aired on a station in Pensacola,Florida
Awww man used to walch this with my late Mom and Dad.
Hooky Brooks somewhere between Buddy Rose and Buddy Landell
Ha they were cheering the Malenkos
“They’re both from England” HA!
The Great Malenko ❤
The Great 😃 Malenko look like the father of Joe & Dean. But who's the lady with them a valet?
Wow, WWF References, WWF Names, WWF Ring Entrance Music? Looks like Gimmick Infringement circa 1987 to me.
I never heard about this wrestling promotion. Can somebody tell me more about it?
It was a short-lived promotion out of Florida, in the late 80s. I’m pretty sure the Malenkos were involved and it was fairly entertaining. I remember seeing them on tv (obviously), but I don’t think they lasted that long.
@@mikes.4136You don't know what the hell You are talking about.
If you don't know, just ignore it. When you just guess, it makes you look stupid.
It was a promotion from 1986-87. The first publicly traded wrestling company, actually.
Did Vince get the gold dust idea from this exotic guy . Wow this guy was ahead of his time ! There are tiktokers who seriously identify as his character …
The people who'd been influenced by Adrian Street's look over his long career would shock you. For instance, David Bowie credited Adrian for influencing the Ziggy Stardust persona.
This looks like it was from the 70s. You can see how McMahon steamrolled over oblivious promotions.
REALLY GREAT HOUR OF WRESTLING IM IMPRESSED. ADRIAN STREET ONE OF THE GREATS .OFTEN IGNORED BUT NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN.
12:31 Dennis "Throat Lozenger" Knight under a mask
Remember this on Lifestyle Channel off the Astra Satellite in 1990-they were showing 1988 episodes with Death Row, Soul Patrol, Steve 'Party Animal' Collins etc. The highlight was Dr Red Roberts-remember he had a Viet Cong wrestler that did some POW mind games on GI Joe Palardi & Cpl Kirchner & Gordon Solie said the men in white coats were invoking the Baker act on him & he did a hilarious Ebert/Siskel footage review thumbs up/down segment with Bob Roop. Amazing that Roberts never made it to WCW or WWF.
All The bigger names in Florida had by this time gone to The WWF, The NWA, AJPW or NJPW/
Dean malenko😊
Later in his carreer in both WCW & WWE he would use the Texas Cloverleaf submission leglock.
I can't find much information on this promotion. Must have been a local indy. Great presentation just as good as WWF or NWA at the time.
From memory it turned out it was actually some kind of tax fraud/pyramid scheme from the backers-think they were bilking investors who had funded it & they shut down when they were investigated. Incredibly they had Gordon Solie commentating after the Florida territory was bought up by Crockett. It ran for about a year from mid 1987-mid 1988 & was hilariously campy-they did an angle in 1988 where a Viet Cong wrestler caused a Vietnam vet wrestler to have a nervous breakdown & he ended up in a mental ward having flashbacks after the guy showed him POW pictures.
Wow, you obviously weren't watching the WWF or NWA at the time.
Who were the wrestlers in death row tag team
I don't remember their names. Only thing I can remember is that they came out wearing prison uniforms & were dastardly heels.
Didnt WWC 's Super Gladiator (Ricky Fontain) wrestled there too? This GWA TV show looks better than AEW Rampage.
I'm not sure. I watched it a good bit when I about 10 or 11, but that name doesn't stand out.
I believe the rusty brooks was in documentary in the early 90s with bullet Bob as the flame.. looks just like the guy..ran a fast food joint during the week.. might not be him but they gotta be family lol
That wasn't Rusty..
Rusty would be at WWF tapings from time to time in the 1980's-he even had a televised world title match against Hogan in 1985.
Look like they are wrestling in ballroom.
LOOK HES A BABY BUDDY ROSE
The Malenko match was painful to watch, not allowing the pin count on 5 different occasions until they were ready. Ouch!
Fujiwara and Sayama were the tag champs?!?!?!?
nice
Did this use to air on Espn or USA?
Neither. It aired in South Florida on Channel 39 WDZL, back in the mid to late 80's.
@@bigbossman2810 Thanks, I remember world class aired on espn.
@@bigbossman2810 Malenko ran ? So this is taped in South Florida?
@@MrChristopherHaas I'm more of a Rusty Brooks fan. I used to live across the street from him back in the 80's. Dean Malenko & Norman Smiley (Lord Norman) used to wrestle in the GWA prior to becoming famous.
@@kidgrebo1 GWF maybe what you’re thinking of which did air on ESPN
Wow, I've never seen this Professional Wrestling Promotion? Trying to run shows in Florida after Jim Crockett Promotions bought Championship Wrestling from Florida (CWF).
I'm laying odds that this was one of Boris Malenko's numerous attempts to start a promotion of his own.
Adrian Street was such a damn good wrestler. I little more size and he could have been a champion.
Sorry 😐 but the real soulman died Rocky Johnson.
Excellent, #SCM
Soulman stealing KoKo's entrance.
Was this when the nWo started?

Better then AEW
@@chadk890 That's not much of an accomplishment.
