A man asks the devil: “How much does it cost to be the greatest guitar player in the world?”
The devil says: “That will cost you your soul.”
The man asks: “Hm... that's a little steep. What can I get for a dollar?”
Devil: “Greatest bass player in the world.”

Not to be a movie nerd, but the movie was set in the 20’s. When Johnson was around. He died in 38. And the movie got his story wrong. Robert sold his soul at the crossroad like the movie says, but in the movie he’s named Tommy Johnson. Tommy Johnson was supposed to also have sold his soul like Robert, but Tommy surfaced in the 30’s and 40’s.

True, but Robert Johnson’s first ever recording was in 1935. It’s fiction that interacts with history; so, it’s possible that it should be set in 1934, especially given the fact that Nelson is headed for the electric chair near the end of the movie. Given the fact that we know Nelson was shot to death, it’s hard to nail it down with pinpoint precision.

Well, Tommy Johnson became famous nationwide in 1928; so, it’s highly unlikely that he waited til the mid-thirties to “sell his soul”, and it’s even more unlikely that he wasn’t recognized by the movie’s other characters. And it’s indisputable that the film takes place during the height of the depression no earlier than 1932. So, that muddies the water even more.

The movie uses things from the 20s, 30s, and 40s due to the fact that certain events band people didn’t exist or do what they were famous for at the same time as other celebrity characters did.

Agreed, some of the best directors. This film was also loosely based on Homers Odyssey, not that loosely in places tbh :) Well worth watching.

Tommy Johnson is unrelated to Robert Johnson. Everyone assumes they used the Tommy name in the movie to imply it was RJ, but Tommy Johnson was a real blues musician and he is where the legend of selling your soul to the devil to play the blues came from. As the years pass, more and more people who are smarter than myself are on the fence as to whether the legend should be attributed to RJ at all. It was Son House who said RJ must’ve sold his soul to play like that… I’m in the “he didn’t sell his soul camp” but I’m also in the “Tommy Johnson actually may have” camp
