Great stuff. Dire Straits' Down To the Waterline, and Richard Thompson, were inspired choices. I would nominate "Ether," the first song off Gang of Four's debut, Entertainment. Or to be more precise, Entertainment! Those first angry bass tones are like nothing else I've ever heard, and then it launches into this intense, funky groove and cryptic lyrics that announce you have entered a new realm of rock 'n roll.

Great topic and selection right here and 1I agree with all your picks but there is a glaring omission in my opinion
The greatest opening line and track of any album , any decade
“ Jesus Died for Somebody’s Sins but not Mine “
Gloria : Horses : Patti Smith
4 more to round out my top 5
Babylon is Burning : The Ruts
The only band from that era to rival or best The Clash
    Wuthering Heights : Kate Bush
The guitar outro blow me away every time
    Ruckzuck ( Right Now ) : Kraftwerk
( this is more Can than Autobahn presynthesizers)
Vashti Bunyan : Diamond Day for Just Another Diamond Day ; one of my favorite albums all time

You have a very eclectic collection from the 70s and excellent taste in music. I completely agree with The Clash, Television, NY Dolls, Sex Pistols, The Cars, Elvis Costello, and Nick Lowe because this is what captured my ears when growing up. The music and ideas were much different than big rock bands at the time. Cheers!!

Wow ! I don’t own anything from Dave Mason, but that vinyl design is exceptionally unique. What a treasure of a collector’s item. And yes, the Burgermeister song is a fascinating way to launch Gabriel’s solo career. Also, ‘ See No Evil ‘ is the ultimate attention getter. I never knew who those guys were until I finally discovered that catchy rocker. But I’d love to throw in one opener, that being from David Gilmour’s debut.
‘ Mihalis ‘ is a gorgeous instrumental, leading off his finest solo work. It’s definitely one that flies under the radar but it’s just classic David through and through.

Agree with most of those -- never heard Sugarman and don't care for Return To Forever (love Mahavishnu though). The thing about the '70s is, you could do a list *just* about the fantastic punk/new wave records -- this list seems incomplete without "Neat Neat Neat" from the The Damned's debut, that one almost blistered my speakers. Gotta have "(I'm) Stranded" by The Saints (more blistering). And where's "Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones? Oh so many, and I didn't even mention "The Next Big Thing", proto-punk by The Dictators. It was a great time to be alive.
I want to throw in Nils Lofgren, but he was introduced by Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Grin records to the point that when he finally put out a solo "debut" record, it didn't feel so much like a debut, y'know? Besides, there was a little intro tune that softened the real intro of "Back It Up". Still great stuff -- go listen to the whole first Nils Lofgren solo debut. 😃

I confess that I don't know the Grin material at all - just the Neil Young, Crazy Horse, and early solo records. Not the decades of Bruce Springsteen work either. But the first solo record is enough to nail his place in history. And available all over RUclips -- look for the picture of him posing in front of a circus poster of a fat boy.

      Can't stand his politics.

    • @simonagree4070
      @simonagree4070 5 месяцев назад

Some might argue that Ted's solo career really began when he moved The Amboy Dukes over to Frank Zappa's DiscReet record label and billed Call Of The Wild to Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes. One more record before he switched labels again and dropped "& The Amboy Dukes" from his moniker, but the band had already been through so many changes that it had been a Ted Nugent solo act for years by the time he made it official with the album you're thinking of. As to his politics, I really don't care -- I lost interest around 1981, about the same time as ZZ Top. You can only milk it for so long before it runs dry.
