I would"nt say grandpa, maybe uncle rock climber. Your in good shape to make that climb. Good idea to take experianced help . Thanks for the views atop weavers needle jerry.
I appreciate this comment more than you could know. I once spent 2 hours masking text around me as I walked by, just for a 4 second clip in a 30 minute video. Sure, I love doing it, but it's nice when it's noticed!
Congrats on making it to the top this time! Man I was cringing watching you climb in your hiking boots...that didn't look easy. Those campsites up at the summit look pretty sweet! I'm glad you got to check that one off of your list!
Crazy to believe this was on the easier spectrum of climbing. Eric V (who actually has experience climbing) said they'd be fine. And they were. Wouldn't have made it up the chute without a rope (that's where I stopped last time) and the downclimbs freaked me out in a couple spots.
@@JerryArizona , yeah it looked like you had some good holds on the way up...pretty sweet climb. Hey on the approach...was there a fire there recently or was everything abnormally drier than usual? There was a lot of dead growth going through there.
So I have been watching your videos for over a year.. not sure exactly when I subbed but it was a while ago. I just noticed you only have 6k subs. That is unreal to me. I've watched almost all of your videos. You have continuously improved production quality. Gone out and done tons of hikes and provided so much info and insight... This channel is very close to exponential growth and I cant figure out why it hasn't happened yet. Tina's recent video was great also and I liked that you tried to produce that one a bit differently than you normally do your own.
Love this comment. I really appreciate that you've watched so much and can see the improvement. And you're absolutely right; I purposefully made her video a different style. Thanks for your kind words and for watching.
Awesome video! I’ve hiked Peralta Trail a few times and loved it, but climbing up Weavers Needle would be too intense for moi. Glad you had the courage and filmed it though for us mere mortals to watch and enjoy!
@@JerryArizona I’ve seen some of your other vids and find that your pace and trails make me think we are of similar ilk. I’m maybe five years younger but 20 pds heavier. Been up to Lone Tree from Peralta three times, twice were solo. And each time I think someday Weavers Needle. But the prep and ready partner(s) are critical. You doing this was inspiration!
One of the coolest feelings ever was right after that last little pitch and climbing that little hill just before topping out. The top of there is really something else! When I was there it was a clear day and I could see Mt Humphries
Oh hell yeah. That was the best feeling. I tried this years ago and failed, so this was not only amazing in it's own right, but the feeling of redemption was icing on the cake.
I wish I could have that view of the Superstition Mountains framed in my house. So many photos are taken of it at a weird angle, where Flatiron seems taller than the summit, but now I see, the view from behind really highlights it! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome. This was one of my favorite trips. Someone once told me the views from the top of Weavers weren't that great. They were wrong. If it wasn't so physical, I would've brought my full frame camera up there and gotten better pictures.
It's rough, for sure. I definitely do not have the rock climbing experience to have done this solo. Just inexperience and misunderstanding of beta that got me into trouble. Glad to have it under my belt though.
Did this once back in the 90's with an awesome bunch of friends...including one of my buddy's 14 yo daughter. I don't remember it being that hard, or even rapping off! The older I get, the better I was. Got buzzed by a helicopter tour the next morning, I hope they enjoyed the group BA we flashed them!
What an accomplishment, best view in the area! Group of us did it in the 80s, no girls, no ropes, no fear, and definitely no brains! At almost 60 I’m now content just hiking the surrounding mountains. Still doing stupid stuff though!
Love the pacing of this one! Your videos have just gotten better and better over time. Also - not sure if you're a Premiere user, but the effect at 1:20 is a lot easier to pull off using tracking in After Effects.
It was awesome. And terrifying. Those downclimbs are no joke if you don't have climbing experience. Glad I did it, but I don't know if I'll have the balls to do it again.
@@JerryArizona Understand! Did a little 'free' climbing on the side of a waterfall on the North Shore in Minnesota....was about 30-40 feet up, only 10-15 to go, and found myself with no place to go! Abject panic! Had a long reach to a tree root which thankfully held...haven't climbed like that since!
Probably not. I am so glad I did this, but it was also my first real rock climbing experience and honestly it was terrifying. I will be doing more canyoneering videos though. Funny that the scariest part to rock climbers is going down and the scariest part to canyoneers is going up....
Love the video and great idea to spend the night i cant tell angles from the camera but would you say for a higher level rock climber this is something you wouldnt need ropes for
I am not a rock climber. At all. I canyoneer, so I have some experience down climbing. My one friend on this trip is a rock climber. My other one isn't, but he has a crazy gift at doing this type of stuff. Neither of them roped up for anything. I only needed a rope (going up) for the second pitch. I've heard that this is a fairly basic climb, so if you're experienced, you will probably be OK. I definitely wouldn't want to have to climb down it without rappelling though.
@@JerryArizona thanks for the reply jerry but funny timing i hiked out there saturday to see it myself and just ended up climbing the whole thing no rope 😁
Good to see you went back for a succesful repeat FYI - if this was filmed last week Saturday I probably passed you on the trail going down ! I'm going back up there this weekend and hopefully will see your name in the summit log!
I was wondering why you were hauling such big packs to the summit and then I saw that you were doing it as an overnighter! So cool. Summit camps are the best. What is the climbing rating for that route? Is a 60m rope plenty long enough for the pitches and rappels? Would a 50m work? Congratulations, nicely done!
I am not a rock climber, so I can't really give you an educated answer on a that technical aspect. (I do canyoneer, but this is the only rock climbing I've done.) I believe the longest rappel is around 100', but it can be longer if you go all the way to the bottom from the chokestone to the beginning of Pitch #1. I think we had a 60m, 9mm rope. But I deal in static ropes, not dynamic...and I measure in feet. I recommend reading up on some route beta from people who know rock climbing if you want to try it. My friends free solo'd all pitches. I did 3 of 4, but had to rope up (and use the rope) on pitch #2. The overnight idea was from my friends. I'd tried it before and failed, so my plan was to camp at the bottom. So glad we stayed up there though.
So awesome! Love the video and the honesty of what it is really like to climb it. What was it like to stay the night on top? Btw, the credits were funny!
It was really cool. Especially since I failed several years ago and its been taunting me ever since. The views were incredible and the campsites were really cool. Got to cowboy camp for my first time ever. You don't want to wander too far away from camp though. Not much space before it's straight down.
Weavers was more terrifying than I remembered. So glad I did it, doubt I'll do it again. This is where I learned that rock climbing is not my cup of tea.
Helmets, good shoes (although I didn't wear climbing shoes) and two friends who know how to rock climb; I do not and never would have made it up there without them.
Alright Mr Arizona. How do I go from where I am, no climbing experience or friends who actively climb, to summiting weavers needle? Can I pay you to join in next time?
Ha! You don't want me helping you. I tried and failed at Weavers Needle solo. Brought a couple rock climber buddies back and they helped me through it. I am no rock climber. For canyoneering, I recommending reaching out to AZ Rock & Canyon for some classes. They can probably point you in the direction of some rock climbing courses too. Start there and maybe an indoor gym and just talk with people. If you show you're serious about learning and doing it right, you'll probably be able to make some friends that will take you out. Then you go from there. That's pretty much what we did with canyoneering, but I haven't gotten into rock climbing. PS - Weavers Needle TERRIFIED me in a couple spots, although it didn't bother my friends at all.
Your grandchildren could barely keep up with you Jerry😉. Congratulations on conquering that beast💪🏼👍🏼. Pretty sweet how you stayed up there. Whenever I get down to your neck of the woods we should get together for some kind of collab, or at the very least margaritas!!!
Not for me, but I'm not a rock climber. I'm sure plenty of rock climbers could do it, but always better to have a couple people along. Things could easily go sideways on something like this. Not to mention you can split up gear weight. I wouldn't recommend it. (Ironically, I tried it. But that was pretty stupid of me.)
@@JerryArizona I get that. My wife and I went with Exum Mountain Guides. They put you through a two day evaluation course to see if your up to it, then a two day climb. First day 12 miles up to lower saddle, then second day starting at 3am to summit and back to trail head. I thought I was prepared. It fucked me up. Layed in a tent for two days not able to move. Had to piss in a bottle. Wasn’t cheap, but worth every penny, and the pain
