How Russians have reacted to Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk region | BBC News

- For nearly two weeks, Ukrainian forces have been seizing and occupying Russian territory in the Kursk region.
It marks the first time since World War Two that a foreign army has been fighting inside Russia - and for many Russian people, it is cause for alarm.
Repeating the official messaging of the state media, some Russians call for “peace on Russia’s terms”, while others expressed hope that Moscow and Kyiv will sit down at the negotiating table and work out a way to end the conflict.
But, while the Kremlin is still calling what its troops are doing in Ukraine a “special military operation”, ordinary Russians use one simple word to describe all of this: "war".

Maybe if Russia hadn't invaded Ukraine, they wouldn't have Ukraine returning the favor!
Dohledejte si proč byla napadena Ukrajina !!!
Najděte souvislosti a potom suďte !
It was not a shock. The population of the territory of the so-called Ukraine had been pumped up with hatred towards Russians and Russia as a whole for decades. At the end of 2013, Victoria Nulad reported that 5 billion dollars had been successfully spent on this. Zlensky refused to implement the completed peace treaty regulating the end of the civil war in the east and the reintegration of the two new republics that had broken away during the coup d'etat in 2014 in Kyiv, mainly consisting of ethnic Russians, back into Ukraine. Then Russia was forced to recognize their independence. At that moment, I saw a video from some location of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and remembered this video well, in which one of the soldiers shouted "kill everyone, take everything!", finally what they were preparing for will happen: "Muscovites on knives" (c). After which Russia signed agreements with the republics on cooperation and mutual assistance (including military assistance) and what the "honest and independent" media call "an unprovoked full-scale war" began, despite the fact that Kyiv has still not been wiped off the face of the earth like Gaza.
I read the comments and am surprised at how many people blame Russia and compare Russia to Nazi Germany, completely ignoring the fact that Russia and Ukraine were one country for hundreds of years, and many Russians have relatives there. Just a few years ago, it was their common home. And in 2014, pro-American forces seized power in Ukraine and Washington ordered Kyiv to bomb cities where Russians lived. The genocide of the Russian population lasted 8 years, after which Russia began a military operation in 2022. And for some reason you ignore the fact that the new government of Ukraine, which seized power in 2014 as a result of a bloody coup, began to tear down monuments to those people who fought against Hitler, began to rehabilitate fascism and revive it, to name streets and stadiums after fascists. Doesn't anything bother you about this?

Following the Anschluss of Austria in March 1938 and the Munich Agreement in September of that same year, Adolf Hitler annexed the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia. The loss of the Sudetenland was detrimental to the defense of Czechoslovakia, as the extensive Czechoslovak border fortifications were also located in the same area. As a consequence, the incorporation of the Sudetenland into Germany that began on 1 October 1938 left the rest of Czechoslovakia weak. Moreover, a small northeastern part of the borderland region known as Trans-Olza was occupied and annexed to Poland, ostensibly to "protect" the local ethnic Polish community and as a result of previous territorial claims. Furthermore, by the First Vienna Award, Hungary received the southern territories of Slovakia and Carpathian Ruthenia, which were largely inhabited by Hungarians.

In April 2023, a very interesting interview took place, which was given by the British satirical writer with Russian roots, and part-time popular stand-up comedian Konstantin Kisin, to the former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia John Anderson. During the conversation, Kisin compared the numbers of arrests for publications on social networks over the past year in Russia and in the West. The announced figures, to put it mildly, shocked, and not the Russians, but the Europeans. As it turned out, in Russia there were 400 such arrests, and in Britain "a little" more - 3,300. And these are not unfounded statements by Konstantin Kisin, but official data published in the renowned publication "The Times". The population of Russia is about 150 million, and in Britain 67 million people. That is, by simple arithmetic calculations, we find that in "free and democratic" Britain the number of arrests per capita is 20 times greater than in "totalitarian" Russia. My Opa was born in Germany in 1920, though he died when I was very young in 2002. When I'd ask family members what it was like for him to live through the 1930s and 1940s, I had always heard it described that he didn't support the regime, that he was an apolitical person, and I can only assume because he described himself as such. He was obviously too young to affect the rise of H, but now I think the assertion that he was apolitical actually is telling about how an authoritarian regime like in 1930s-40s Germany or modern Russia makes its citizens think. Either they are diehard supporters of the regime and party, or they say to themselves that there's nothing they can do, that they shouldn't think about politics, that politics is the domain of the party and their great leader.

Chronicles first mentioned Ukraine in the 12th century. The world was used to describe the border territories of Volyn, Galich, and Pereyaslavl princedoms of Russia.
Only their border territories, not the princedoms themselves.
Kiev used to be the capital of Rus or Russia after Oleg united large territories and basically created a state of Russia and moved it's capital from Novgorod to Kiev in the 9th century. Thus the Rurikids dynasty of Russia started.
Oleg was the regent for Rurik's son Igor. Most probably he was a Rurik's kinsman.
They were vikings apparently invited to Novgorod to rule (Novgorod was a democracy that used to invite princes as war leaders).
Kiev indeed is way older than Moscow.
Due to a complicated system of inheritance among Rurikids (so called ladder system) different lines of Rurikids for a long time moved from princedom to princedom. So within a few years a city (or the princedom around it) could see several different princes. It was a bit of a mess. Rurikids fought each other, had unions, etc, but all of them were relatives.
However in a while the country kind of had three regions with different traditions.
Novgorod was a typical democracy that could sent princes away and invite them back. Vladimir and Suzdal had a strong united power of princes. Galich and Volyn had weak princes and strong aristocracy that was fighting among themselves.
So pretty quickly the Great Duchy of Lithuania captured Gaich and Volyn's territories. Later there were lots of fights for those lands.
Moscow line of Rurikids got to prominence due to their long and persistent resistance against the Mongols.
It took them many generations to collect power, but eventually they managed to defeat the Mongols and get independence.

Saying the last great leader of your country before Putin was Alexander III says everything you need to know. His most enduring legacy, apart from there being peace during his reign, is one of Russification, closing of institutions in languages other than Russian, very significant hostility to Jews (it was during his reign that the first modern-era pogroms against Jews started in Europe), unlimited autocracy and a general fanatical opposition to the liberalising reforms of his predecessor. If she was a general monarchist, she could have said Nicholas II (the last emperor), but no, she chose Alexander, very deliberately I'm sure.
Alexander III also reversed all of the liberal reforms introduced before him. Most people in Russia know and love him because he said that Russia got no friends but its army and its navy
I think the reason she brought him up is because Putin really likes Alexander III
Nicolas 2 is a shame to the nation. Weak in mind and lost in reality. No wonder that he was the last one.
Alexander 3 was a true patriot which invested a lot into the country. Liberalism is not equal to development, it's just a bla-bla practice of nothing. The same as what's going on ibln Europe now - emptiness and stagnation though absolutely liberal.
Alexander was killed by the people sent from european and american nazi

It's a superpower it takes care of its people and the journalist is brave. Also the journalist is controlled for sure. Just you cannot see it. Have you seen those lame questions?
The journo is carefull not to incriminate himself just like the people he interviewing.
Questions are not statements.
March 2022 'The BBC is temporarily suspending its journalists' work in Russia, in response to a new law which threatens to jail anyone Russia deems to have spread "fake" news on the armed forces.' May 2024 'Following the invasion of Ukraine, BBC News Russian journalists and their families were moved out of Moscow to the Latvian capital of Riga. Now, 39 BBC staff remain in Riga, continuing the work of reporting independent and impartial news to audiences around the world in Russian. As long as we are physically vulnerable mortal beings it won't go away, so it will never go away. Someone will always take advantage of our biggest weakness. Nuclear weapons are the strongest guard against a large war , I believe the thing that has stopped us descending into ww3 in recent decades.
