I’m a Kraken fan now since they made it easy to get into the NHL but I remember tuning into a Capitals game as a kid 10 years ago. Watching Ovi play was mesmerizing. I’ll always cheer on the Caps. The Great 8 is one of the best to ever do it.
Ovi got me into hockey since I was a kid with his introduction to the NHL. I was hooked ever since. I remember all this milestones, the 2018 Stanley Cup win that I was riding a high for months. Seeing him hit 800. Wow. I never had a doubt, and still believe he WILL become #1 on that list and overtake Gretz, and I will cherish that moment for my life, telling my grandkids one day decades down the line when Ovi Jr. is playing in the NHL. To me, stories like yours is Ovi's true legacy. Sure, he has tons of on-ice success, but the fact that youth hockey participation is up over 200% since he's come to Washington is way bigger than anything else. In 2004, you could find slots in just about any youth hockey team. Now, not only have the number of teams exploded, good luck finding a spot on those teams.
Ovi is a born sniper. I do not know how many goals he would have scored now if he had not missed matches due to covid and lockouts. The fact that Ovi almost escaped injury during his outstanding career can be considered a great success. A total of 18 games missed due to injuries is a unique indicator for an NHL superstar. I think Ovi has every chance to surpass Wayne Gretzky, who played until he was 38. The main thing is that there are no injuries...

He is incredible. And to think so many wrote him off as getting to old and slipping. I thought his usual cast of players come back his scoring could increase. One came back. Right smack in the thick of the goal scoring race. It is like scoring became easier. Funny Oshie comes back and so did his scoring. Still me myself did not think he would get close. As long as he stays healthy he will get it. I wonder if he keeps playing after he passes the Great one. And for how long? 50? Think he must be a robot. His scoring is unreal. He still looks great. His recent pace will get him 50 again if not more. If there is slippage in his play, I do not see it. Very little, but he is getting gray.

Assuming he hits that, he'd be only 62 goals away from 895. He'd only need to average 31 goals the next two seasons and if he played to 40 he'd only need to average 21 goals over 3 seasons. It is absolutely without any doubt VERY possible.

Over those 800 goals soooooo many were skilled goals. Honestly, even the ones where he sits on the PP and blows it by the goalie is impressive. He's averaging 44 goals per season after 17.5 seasons. In my opinion, and you're happy to object, he'll reach 900

@@charleynewman4783 there's a chance; he's at 800 now, there's 51 games left this season, lets say he finishes this year with 54 (he's on pace for 54) he'd finish the season at 834. At the pace he's going.
He'll have 3 more years remaining on his contract, he would need to then average 21.5 goals in those 3 seasons to reach 900. He's averaging 44 goals per season after 17.5 seasons. In my opinion, and you're happy to object, he'll reach 900

Wings fan for life here. But I would be lying if I said that this didn't make me a little emotional. Congrats to one of the greatest players of my time. And kudos to Chicago fans for celebrating him the way they did. It was classy and made this wings fan proud of our rivals across the lake.

I know Gretz still has the record, but if Ovi never gets to beat that record for whatever reason, in my book he's by far the best goal scorer this league has ever seen, in terms of raw talent.

The only disappointment is that Backstrom wasn't out there with him.
