Back in the mid 2000's I used to work for a small Hedge Fund that decided to open a branch in Singapore as the Singapore govt was giving rent subsidies for Financial Firms to open offices there. It did not last and by 2010 the company I had worked for had closed the Singapore office. All the employees of the Singapore office were either let go or offered a position in the NYC or London offices. Before the closure the Singapore office was ordered to liquidate their positions, but they were unable to sell about half a dozen Chinese names. As I worked for the Risk Dept my boss told me to look into this. What I found was that these companies, which had been purchased on Chinese exchanges, not only no longer existed, there was no evidence they had ever existed. Our Singapore traders had relied on these Chinese exchanges to do their due diligence before they listed these non-existent compnies which was obviously a mistake.

Our company also made an investment in the Marc Drier fraud - you should be able to look it up in Wikipedia. Luckily we never made any investments with Bernie Madoff although we had made a few trades with his company years before I had joined.
