      Exactly, instead of teaching us why, we're just told to memorize an example. Not helpful, frankly.

    What if you don't have the information of the right number of oxygen atoms that gives -ate. How are you supposed to then know if it's Per- (..) -ate, (...) -ate, (...) -ite or Hypo- (...) -ite?
    Seems that naming theese requires already knowing which formula gives -ate, which you need to know?
    In that case, why even bother, if you can't get to the answer without having some pre-requisite information?

    I'm very confused, can you explain why NO is nitrogen monoxide if you said -Ide is reserved for ionic compounds, but that is a covalent compound???? please someone explain 😢

      Oxygen is nonmetal so it would have ide? (I have no clue)

    If PO4^3- is phosphate and PO3^3- is phosphite then how exactly they differ since I should use "ate" if only it's less than 3 right?

      Watch the video again, it's explained at least 4 times.

      Basically , these two words are only for polyatomic ions. Take a look at the chart he shows for ex: NO3- is nitrATE. But if you take away ONE oxygen it will be NO2- so the name changes to NitrITE. In summery it represents if you took away an oxygen atom or not. I’m probably late but hope this helps!
