I like that but the Two Worlds opening was far more uplifting and therefore more tragic when we learn very shortly later that they were killed. also Two Worlds showed both parents and the apes back to back. fits the final film better thematically than this one....
This is slightly more accurate to the book, aside from the fact that it was Kerchak who killed Tarzan's father. I appreciate that they tried to keep some of the original elements from the book. In the end, this version seemed to be just a little too dark for a movie children would be watching. They found a good balance with the scene that was actually used. When I was young, I didn't recognize the bodies, but I understood that his parents were killed.

Disney would have lost alot of their child audience if they'd kept this, which is their target anyway.

Technically he's not a villain, he's a leopard hunting like any other leopard. Most likely, Sabor was a female that was too large to hunt her normal prey and therefore had to resort to prey that was relatively easier to capture.
As "Colin Looks Back" says in his Disney villains retrospective, I don't view predators as villains, if all they're doing is following their basic instincts.

this is so scary... tarzan's death scenes traumatised me so much. the part where kala enters the tree house, you can see his parent's dead bodies on the floor boards. and the kerjack getting shot and after that clayton just hanging from the tree all those deaths just broke me as a child and i think this would've been the cherry on top of it all

I don't think this is "too intense for Disney", Disney, even back to Snow White was very intense. After Walt's death the company stuck to a sort of formula that made movies successful but maybe not as creatively interesting as they could've been, it's why Don Bluth left to make his own company. A bloody hand being dragged away, smearing blood, would be no problem..seeing that what I mentioned above is just as bad.

I can’t begin to describe how much this scene fucked me up as a kid. Tarzan was the first movie I owned on DVD, and I saw this and the other deleted scenes in the bonus features. I watched the features multiple times but made extra care to avoid this one after the first viewing because it terrified me that much.
This would have been a straight up horror scene. Also, on a side note, I can't help but notice the way that Tarzan's father's arm slumps to the floor to indicate death. That's almost the exact same movement that Kerchak's arm makes when he dies in the finished film.
The sad truth is that opening would have been closer to the original Tarzan story. Because what both have in common is that Tarzan’s father is killed while trying to defend his infant son. The difference is that in the books it’s Kerchek who killed his father.

I honestly fell like this opening would've been awesome and made Tarzan that film that crossed the boundaries, especially considering the bad guy accidentally hanged himself.
I think this scene should have been in the film, it would have gave off more of an emotional thrust leading onto the rest of the film regarding Tarzan's adaptation & survival, a constant dark reminder of where he bred from. That's one of the things I wish were featured in Tarzan as an addition, a backstory into his parents which I believed would have made the film even better. But regardless, the film is absolutely amazing.
I would have LOVED to see Tarzans father putting up the fight as a child. Beats the hell outta two spent shells on the floor is all we see. Major props, good job my friend.
While this is a dark opening and really like it, I much prefer the one we went with. Seeing the aftermath of Sabors attack, the discarded rifle and Tarzans parents bodies holding each other was far less traumatizing than this was. I think if they ever do a live-action remake, they should try something like this - I know the Alex Skarsgaard movie a few years ago referenced this part of the storyline.

This is back when Disney had a lot of scary ideas for making Disney Animated Cult Classic into *A Disney DARKER HORROR film* so that one of the Disney animated films that can terrifies the audience and also the common moviegoers. I really like How Disney uses a lot of horror and darker elements into the Disney animated films to have that dark and grittier tone and to make it feel like it’s a *Disney Horror film* so that can terrifies the audience in the movie theaters and in cinemas. *The DARKER tones* in Disney Animated Classics are *WAY BETTER* than *The LIGHT tones* that we got in the newer Disney films that are in CG life like form.

They should make a Tarzan movie based on the real story. which is pretty dark, it was kerchak who killed Tarzan’s parents. If this scene was put in the movie, Disney would get sued cause it’s too heavy for kids. To me, Sabor is the most intense Disney villain and one of my favorites, cause she is savage, vicious, fast, not afraid to fight a bulky gorilla and she doesn’t talk she only roars and growls.
If the movie as a whole was darker, this would have been an incredibly good opening. However, seeing that the movie is mostly upbeat, I think this would have set too somber and unsettling of a mood.
Thank god this was deleted because it has graphic contents + it would be like a scary movie and this is meant to be a kids movie but if this was’nt deleted, then it would be rated r. Scary scene though! As least the saber didn’t know there’s a baby who has now grown up and killed the sabor!
The way I see it, this was cut for good reasons; 1. Disney is known for having a family-friendly image, so this intro would put some conflict into how we look at it today. 2. This cutscene is chockfull of flashing strobe lights, so being an experienced person who has suffered from epilepsy on numerous occasions, I know that if they kept this intro, millions of children would have had seizures, if not grand mall seizures, especially in its theatre debut form.
I'm willing to bet the shot of Sabor dragging his body away would NOT have got past the censors. Also there's the horrible implication that Sabor killed Tarzan's mother and was there to finish the job.
I don't think that's the case, I think its implied the mother died from natural causes, and the hungry leopard Sabor was a coincidence, In the book Tarzan's mother died from natural causes and his father was killed by Kerchak so I think its supposed to be a reference to the book, slightly different with Sabor
My God, had that been the opening of the film, I would have been screaming the cinema down (I was 6 when this came out, and quite easily scared). "Tarzan" is a scary enough film as it is, probably amongst the darkest of all Disney animations.
Geez I always hated the fact that Tarzan's parents died...I mean I know it would've ruined the whole "raised by apes" thing but still...they never said a word and yet their characters spoke volumes to me... so sad :'(
You know what was scary the most about this scene? Tarzan’s father was at a disadvantage trying to shoot Sabor during the scenes when it got dark, while Sabor’s night vision gave her the advantage to dodge his shootings and strike.

At least we know explicitly what happened to Tarzan's parents. I wonder if this implies his mother died before his father, after the construction of the treehouse? The final opening is more dynamic regardless, and sets the tone of the movie better.
Oh, HELL no! That version, though intriguing, would have gotten all the kiddie seats in the theaters wet in no time. And as for sentiment, I have yet to watch the opening seen with Kala and Keorwhatshisname and their baby, followed by Kala following the sound of a crying baby, without majorly tearing up, so there's that.

O.O.........The cinematography and the general direction of this is fantastic, but I agree it wouldn't have sit well with the kids, especially if you plunged the theater into darkness like that.
I’m glad that the artists and animators have been looking at the storyboards for this and thought, “This is not working. We need a lighter but also a little bit dark beginning to this.” I bet that if Walt were alive and he saw what was happening in these storyboards he would’ve thrown them out like the way he did with Bill Peet’s original treatment on The Jungle Book, making it a little more faithful to the Rudyard Kipling story. I enjoy the bonus feature never before seen stuff that we never get to see during theatrical releases and that’s the beauty of DVDS. I’m a fan of the Disney artistry from the 20s all the way to the 90’s and maybe a few from the 2000s, they have better artwork than digital same face drawings like Frozen to Encanto. I don’t like that. Seeing this never completed beginning is the reason why I enjoy watching bonus feature extras than the watching the actual movie itself, though I do love the movies. But the bonus feature behind the scenes-behind the curtain kind of extras makes it better. I hope my comment makes sense?

The book is even worse , sabor did not kill tarzan's parents in the book , it was kerchak and other gorillas and it was because tarzan's father ran out of bullets , yep... that asshole was killing every animal that came close to his cabin.
Tarzan’s father (John Clayton Greystoke II) had to shot any wild animal, coming into their cabin, in order to protect his child. But he couldn’t continue to protect his son because...well, you know. 😓
Wow...... that opening would have traumatised millions of children! Glad they went with the chosen opening, not just because its less violent and scary for the younger audience, but I think it better introduced the themes of family and universal love by incorporating the gorillas as well.
I must say this is more true to the original Edgar Rice Burroughs book than the final cut. Don't get me wrong, I like the Two Worlds opening a lot, but in terms of faithfulness, this works better. In the novel, Tarzan's mother dies before his father, and then he gets killed before Kala finds the child. I don't know, but this could had been interesting to see in the movie.
This one implies more that the mother was already dead from the ship wreckI think considering that we were treated to the death of the baby Gorilla [TT_TT] that having this too would have been more depressing than needed. Not to mention it was already scary with the ending. I never noticed Clayton's corpse hanging in the trees till Fanfiction Critics' top 11 Death villain's death video showed me...
I'm glad the chose the other ending instead. There we really see the parents' love for each other and their son, not to mention how similar the mother and Kala are.
I don't think this would have been too intense of an opening for kids but it would mess with the quick flow we ended up getting, the opening we got tells us everything we need to know in a quick and impactful way combining both the story of Tarzan and his parents along with the apes all to a fantastic Phil Collins song, if they went with this one they'd then have to cut to Kerchak and Kala and it wouldn't be as smooth.
I have a question regarding tarzan parents death. I always remember this scene, that his father is writing a journal describing how his wife died of illness and then there is blood on the diary. Tarzan reads it when he gets older and knows how his parents died. I can't remember if it happened in the episodes (animation) or in another tarzan movie. I keep remembering this scene but I can't find it anywhere in the movies I remember watching. does anyone know anything about it?

I really miss when Disney would take risk to put darker themes in their animation. Not to said they don't take risk at all today but they don't kill their villains off like they used to.

This is back when Disney had a lot of scary ideas for making Disney Animated Cult Classic into *A Disney DARKER HORROR film* so that one of the Disney animated films that can terrifies the audience and also the common moviegoers.
I really like How Disney uses a lot of horror and darker elements into the Disney animated films to have that dark and grittier tone and to make it feel like it’s a *Disney Horror film* so that can terrifies the audience in the movie theaters and in cinemas.
*The DARKER tones* in Disney Animated Classics are *WAY BETTER* than *The LIGHT tones* that we got in the newer Disney films that are in CG life like form.
Seeing Tarzan's Father Struggling To Raise His Now Motherless Son is Hard To Watch if This Scene Was Kept in The Movie it Would've Gave Him A Little More Development Without Saying A Word!!!

They should make a Tarzan movie based on the real story. which is pretty dark, it was kerchak who killed Tarzan’s parents. If this scene was put in the movie, Disney would get sued cause it’s too heavy for kids. To me, Sabor is the most intense Disney villain and one of my favorites, cause she is savage, vicious, fast, not afraid to fight a bulky gorilla and she doesn’t talk she only roars and growls.

If the movie as a whole was darker, this would have been an incredibly good opening. However, seeing that the movie is mostly upbeat, I think this would have set too somber and unsettling of a mood.
The “dada” before savor comes in is so sad!
Thank god this was deleted because it has graphic contents + it would be like a scary movie and this is meant to be a kids movie but if this was’nt deleted, then it would be rated r. Scary scene though! As least the saber didn’t know there’s a baby who has now grown up and killed the sabor!

The way I see it, this was cut for good reasons;
1. Disney is known for having a family-friendly image, so this intro would put some conflict into how we look at it today.
2. This cutscene is chockfull of flashing strobe lights, so being an experienced person who has suffered from epilepsy on numerous occasions, I know that if they kept this intro, millions of children would have had seizures, if not grand mall seizures, especially in its theatre debut form.

Also there's the horrible implication that Sabor killed Tarzan's mother and was there to finish the job.
I don't think that's the case, I think its implied the mother died from natural causes, and the hungry leopard Sabor was a coincidence, In the book Tarzan's mother died from natural causes and his father was killed by Kerchak so I think its supposed to be a reference to the book, slightly different with Sabor

Dark themes is nothing to do being “out of place”, “too dark”, and“unsuitable” for children.
It’s VERY important for the story tone’s growth.
My God, had that been the opening of the film, I would have been screaming the cinema down (I was 6 when this came out, and quite easily scared). "Tarzan" is a scary enough film as it is, probably amongst the darkest of all Disney animations.

Geez I always hated the fact that Tarzan's parents died...I mean I know it would've ruined the whole "raised by apes" thing but still...they never said a word and yet their characters spoke volumes to me... so sad :'(
You know what was scary the most about this scene? Tarzan’s father was at a disadvantage trying to shoot Sabor during the scenes when it got dark, while Sabor’s night vision gave her the advantage to dodge his shootings and strike.

Umm davidfiore4677, I don't meant to be rude or anything, but I do watch some nature documentaries but only with dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, & I'm studying today's animals and prehistoric animals too, so I'm a hobby scientist, you know like a hobby zoologist and paleontologist.
At least we know explicitly what happened to Tarzan's parents. I wonder if this implies his mother died before his father, after the construction of the treehouse? The final opening is more dynamic regardless, and sets the tone of the movie better.
Oh, HELL no! That version, though intriguing, would have gotten all the kiddie seats in the theaters wet in no time. And as for sentiment, I have yet to watch the opening seen with Kala and Keorwhatshisname and their baby, followed by Kala following the sound of a crying baby, without majorly tearing up, so there's that.

The movie we got left me with a respect for African jungle wildlife. Unfortunately it was eclipsed by fear - Sabor was terrifying enough! Having this scene probably WOULD have traumatised me! It was years before I lost my fear of her

The baby lives, the parents die for the Jaguar, that's why it's never possible to get close to the jungle, it's very, very dangerous.

O.O.........The cinematography and the general direction of this is fantastic, but I agree it wouldn't have sit well with the kids, especially if you plunged the theater into darkness like that.

I’m glad that the artists and animators have been looking at the storyboards for this and thought, “This is not working. We need a lighter but also a little bit dark beginning to this.” I bet that if Walt were alive and he saw what was happening in these storyboards he would’ve thrown them out like the way he did with Bill Peet’s original treatment on The Jungle Book, making it a little more faithful to the Rudyard Kipling story. I enjoy the bonus feature never before seen stuff that we never get to see during theatrical releases and that’s the beauty of DVDS. I’m a fan of the Disney artistry from the 20s all the way to the 90’s and maybe a few from the 2000s, they have better artwork than digital same face drawings like Frozen to Encanto. I don’t like that. Seeing this never completed beginning is the reason why I enjoy watching bonus feature extras than the watching the actual movie itself, though I do love the movies. But the bonus feature behind the scenes-behind the curtain kind of extras makes it better. I hope my comment makes sense?

The book is even worse , sabor did not kill tarzan's parents in the book , it was kerchak and other gorillas and it was because tarzan's father ran out of bullets , yep... that asshole was killing every animal that came close to his cabin.
Tarzan’s father (John Clayton Greystoke II) had to shot any wild animal, coming into their cabin, in order to protect his child. But he couldn’t continue to protect his son because...well, you know. 😓
Wow...... that opening would have traumatised millions of children! Glad they went with the chosen opening, not just because its less violent and scary for the younger audience, but I think it better introduced the themes of family and universal love by incorporating the gorillas as well.

I must say this is more true to the original Edgar Rice Burroughs book than the final cut. Don't get me wrong, I like the Two Worlds opening a lot, but in terms of faithfulness, this works better. In the novel, Tarzan's mother dies before his father, and then he gets killed before Kala finds the child. I don't know, but this could had been interesting to see in the movie.

This one implies more that the mother was already dead from the ship wreckI think considering that we were treated to the death of the baby Gorilla [TT_TT] that having this too would have been more depressing than needed. Not to mention it was already scary with the ending. I never noticed Clayton's corpse hanging in the trees till Fanfiction Critics' top 11 Death villain's death video showed me...

I don't think this would have been too intense of an opening for kids but it would mess with the quick flow we ended up getting, the opening we got tells us everything we need to know in a quick and impactful way combining both the story of Tarzan and his parents along with the apes all to a fantastic Phil Collins song, if they went with this one they'd then have to cut to Kerchak and Kala and it wouldn't be as smooth.
I have a question regarding tarzan parents death. I always remember this scene, that his father is writing a journal describing how his wife died of illness and then there is blood on the diary. Tarzan reads it when he gets older and knows how his parents died. I can't remember if it happened in the episodes (animation) or in another tarzan movie. I keep remembering this scene but I can't find it anywhere in the movies I remember watching. does anyone know anything about it?
