John I am a first time serious saltwater fisherman this year because of the pandemic. Avid freshwater fisherman on Long Island for 30 years just never gravitated to saltwater fishing. I live in Patchogue literally 300 feet from the Bay, between your videos and the guys at J&H I have been on the fish since the beginning of the summer and I will now be an avid fresh and saltwater fisherman going forward. Dropped 30 pounds walking the beaches too !!! Thank you for the awesome content enjoy your Florida fishing!!
That's great! I'm glad my stuff helped you out!
Loved your whole year! I often fantasize of the beautiful sitcom that would come out of you guys fishing on Doc’s boat! You’re a legend and a great motivator!
John, thank you for the informative videos. The Fluke bite off the Cape May coast was excellent this year and got better after watching your videos. Nothing like the shake of a 25+" fluke on your gear. Will be recharging between drifts next season. Had great success using butterfly jigs for sea bass and scup as well.
Thanks for that input. A couple of commenters have mentioned how good the Jersey fluke bite was. That's a relief.
Thank you for the excellent content and education this year John! Wrapped up my saltwater season on 11/28/20. Missed on the albies for the first time in 4 years. Hopefully they'll run strong next year. Safe travels to Fla and tight lines!
John, I love and dread these videos every year. My Christmas wish list grows exponentially but this annual opus marks, for me, (as a stay in the northeast year round for now kind of fisherman), a hibernation for the next 4 to 5 months. Thank you for another year of savvy tips, tricks, and guidance. Safe travels, Happy Holidays, and tight lines till we have you back up here in the NE in the spring!
This fall it was the Cotton Cordell pencil it’s noise and cadence was so on point.....Fish on
People catching fish on pencils nowadays
Thanks for the reviews John. I hope you have a wonderful winter down in Florida.. looking forward to those videos when it’s freezing outside up here in Jersey.
Thanks,
Scott
Hell yeah John! Love that jet ski for you. Bad ass haha
Johhhnnnn!!!! Love the content my man. Cant wait for the Florida Vids soon! Tight lines!
Florida video in the morning!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Can't wait! Enjoy your time down here, keep up the great content! 🤙
Finally John is returning to Florida I CANNOT WAIT!!!
Nice review John. I miss the Long Island albies since I moved to SW FL. Welcome back and I look forward to your Pine Island Sound adventures. I have learned a lot from them. Cold front moving through today and should cool down the water and turn on the "winter" bite.
Thanks for the recap John, enjoy Fl, I think you are officially a snowbird now
Hey John. I had fortune to be able to take a break from work and fished hard from July till yesterday. Fluke = horrible
Porgy sea bass = fantastic
Striper = excellent Tons schoolies a few cows exactly like you said shortage of midsize. I fished beaches south shore and north shore. Port Jeff and east was real quiet.
South shore was good to me.
bluefish was nonexistent for me. I caught over 300 bass since sept and not one blue 🤔
Not one ! It’s disturbing.
Let’s hope new regs will have an effect. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. Always a pleasure to watch
Thanks so much for that report. The Jersey guys said fluke was good there, so it sounds like a distribution thing.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I hope that’s correct John. But last number years I’ve have seen a steady decline in my fluke catches with the last two years being practically nonexistent for me anyway. I kayak and boat fish for fluke and sadly I did not fair well. Fingers crossed
Thank you John for showing me your video of the best of 2020 season . I agree with the sizes of stripers not as they were several years ago at the lunker capacity yet i feel that there are still illegal catches being made.
Skinner sent it on that jet-ski
Personally, I had the best fluke season this year by far. Lots of big fluke in NJ 2020. Northern NJ was on fire. Found a lot of them in the surf.
That's so awesome and reassuring to hear. I'm hoping that what I saw in Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound was just a distribution and not a stock problem.
Been fluking NJ for 20 years and it was definitely a good year. I wouldn’t say it was the greatest for me besides finally getting my doormat but the numbers are definitely improving from the past couple years. Did really good at the sandy hook reef this season
If you have been fluking in NJ for 20 years, I’m sure you seen some good times. The previous years weren’t what they used to be but this year was fire. let me tell you. I’m already gearing up for fluking 2021. Every body of water north of IBSP was producing heavy. They were also big fluke. I would on average catch multiple 20in+ fluke and a boat load of shorts. Didn’t matter if I was from boat, surf or jetties. It was a good year. Of course I had days that weren’t the best but overall it was the amazing.
Had a great fluke year also in central Jersey but
I fish block island area and Narraganset bay and the fluke and it was not great. It was tough to get a limit. Even when you found some fluke there were so many seabass/scup to get a bait in front of one
Thanks for sharing that. Block was our last resort for good fishing in tough times.
John, fluke fishing was one of the worst in last few years for me in eastern LIS, and it was the case with most of my friends and guys that I spoke to. Great video as always! Wil you be going to florida this winter?
I'm in Florida now until May.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Great! Looking forward to your warm florida videos after long, cold evenings of snow shoveling and frostbites lol
I'm glad you introduced me to the jumping minnow. That thing is great for snook, reds, and monster trout. I never had success with other topwater plugs but this one is great. And you're right, the hooks it comes with are shit.
It really is an awesome plug. I know the spook jr. is the standard here, and I do throw it sometimes, but always come back to the rebel.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing yeah the spook jr is what I've always used with very little success. The jumping minnow is great. Good luck this season in Florida. Hope to see you try your hand at some grouper fishing, mostly because I want to see how you do it so I can improve lol.
Great season of videos. Learned a lot especially with blackfishing. Thank you. I fish mid sound out of Huntington. The last two fluke seasons were pretty spotty as you mentioned. What I noticed was a lack of a squid run for both years. Any idea why that is?
Hey john, I'm only 13 but I like fishing alot and your videos are very helpful.i was wondering if the dark matter rod can cast bunker far especially with someone as old as me. Thank you
It could definitely cast bunker chunks, but not whole adult bunker.
Perfect, thank you so much
Hey Johnny, I bought all those plugs you designed- let me tell you - as you know - they ARE PRODUCERS!!!! And I’m waiting for my Celtic - got the minnow - / the beautiful light blue 7’ Rod - just patiently waiting on the Celtic , J&H - for sure - always . I love how you do the New York fishing in Florida-
Question- do the reds fight like the stripers or more like the blues- ?? I see u love the snook. I’d love to be down there ... awesome 👍🏻💪🏻🎣
Imagine a blackfish in 2 feet of water - that's what a red fights like, and they don't give up.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing dude you’re the man, that’s soo cool- I never caught a blackfish , someday. Thank you Johnny !! Headed to J&H now actually to get my penn clash -2 - HS , winterized. Can’t wait for the next video!!! 💪🏻👌🏻💯🤝🙏🎣
Tight lines in the Sunshine State Mr. Skinner.
Nice recap. Looks like the Tsunami Carbon Shield link is to the casting rod, not spinning.
Excellent video, what rod where you using on the jetski?
It's an out of production tsunami - 6-6'' rated 6-12# line.
I have , well not a fishing module - but a 1200 cc - it’s fun right ? Definitely can get scary . For me anyway. Recharge- caught my first fluke on that design of fishing - 🎣🙋♂️🤝👍🏻💪🏻🙏
Good stuff man, tight lines!
Awesome content keep it coming
Good job on fishing 🎣😎
Hey John I know this is a late comment, but in one of your blackfish videos from early in the season, you said that you haven’t seen many Tog with gold spots in the western sound I fish the western sound and there are actually a good amount of them. love your vids
Thanks for that input. I guess it's something that's spread. They weren't that color when I was younger.
John, I fish Raritan Bay. Could you do a video on recommendations for striper lures to use from a boat? Poppers, sliders, etc. Please and thank you.
hi John, avid watcher of your channel. I just started fishing again last summer after a long hiatus. i like your videos and your scientific approach to fishing. i also appreciate your conservation. Anyway, wanted to ask your opinion on the dark matter inshore casting rod. i seen you post a review of their surf rod and I wanted to know your opinion on the casting rod for fluke in the summer. I am in the market for a new fluke set up. thanks
John- that Jumpin Minnow is an early season killer plug! Just wondering specifically, if you ran #1 or 1/0 hooks ??
#1 for now.
John - I think I have seen you use procure a little down in FL. What scents would you try in Long Island sound? Bunker, Inshore Saltwater, etc Thank you.
I used it only for jigging grouper. I've had only poor results when using scents for fluke up North. I stick with Gulp, and recharge in Gulp juice.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you sir!
Hey John, how do you drill and fill the pencils and other lures for more weight?
Hi John... reading stripper pursuit now and love. Just wondering if you’ve ever fished the cape cod canal and what lures, rods n reels, times you effective there.
Hey John, Enjoyed the video very much.
Where do you stay in SW Fl?..Naples here.
Pine Island
Thanks a lot for all the info and the gear recs. Do you still fish much at night from the surf or is it mostly into sunset and a little beyond? I know filming is nigh impossible in the dark, but just wondering if you’re still hunting very large fish long after dark. Trying to decide how much of my limited time and energy I should invest in fishing way after dark vs just dusk and beyond.
Not as much night because of the video thing and I can only do so much. If you want big fish - start and fish in the dark.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing excellent succinct advice. Thanks for focusing my mind.
John I am getting ready to head to SW Florida soon and as a fellow north easter I find the in Fl knowone uses terminal tackle. all use loop knots line to line knots etc. and I'm do the same when I'm down, Question, do you use terminal tackle when fishing FL waters, do you use Angler clips?
I use a loop knot, but I can't see how a 50# TA clip would hurt on the topwater plugs. I hate using a loop knot because I have to cut into my leader for every lure change.
Good luck in Florida John. Its time for you to annihilate the tarpon. That's one species I have not seen you dominate YET. I'll see you down there this year hopefully before February. We missed you on the Halkias trip. We boated 65 or 70 blackfish that day. You were missed! Stay well.
Hi Frank! Glad you had a good trip. I missed you by a day to hit the weather window for driving.
John have you ever worked the Cape Cod Canal or the rest of the Cape and Islands?
No, have not gone up there.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Hopefully one of these seasons you get the opportunity to test the waters!
the rebel jumpin minnow is a walk the dog lure. Do you pause your retrieve a moment when you twitch the rod tip? or you do a continues roll of the reel handle?
I give it enough slack on the twitches so that it moves on its own, but in looking at this video, a little more than 4 minutes in, I'm using a steady retrieve. ruclips.net/video/GIrYlDGrWMQ/видео.html
6:30 🤔 hmmmm... i know that lighthouse 😂
Come on down John ...been here since November 1...fish-on
I couldn’t get any stripers from the surf this run. Any tips on how to catch my first one.
Any tips? His entire video catalog is nothing but advice lol
@@johntrotto2216 I was talking about tide, and exact ways he does it. How the retrieve is and an in depth way to catch stripers without paying 50 dollars for a book
No videos of albies from shore this season? I know it was tough locally.....did you get on them from shore at all?
I tried for all of 20 minutes one day. I checked the local spot frequently and it just wasn't worth the effort. I know there were some a little east of me, but generally tough.
Great video as always. Question: what length Carbon Shield rod do you recommend for fishing out of a 10’ kayak for back bay stripers and blues? I see the link goes to a 7’ but I was thinking of a 7.5 for a bit more casting length. And is the 3/4 ounce top end about it, or could one throw a 1.1 SP? Thanks!!
I have the 7.5 ft and prefer the 7. I'd suggest this one. bit.ly/31oKzr2
John Skinner Fishing. The link you added in reply above is a MH. The original link is a M. Are you recommending the MH based on type of fishing I described or would M be enough? Thanks!!
@@DavidBronstein1961 The MH would be the best choice for going up to the SP, and for handling larger bass and blues.
Hi John I'm from rhode island and I've used casting egg with a epoxy fly .I don't see it being used anywhere else.have you tried it?
I have not tried it and have not seen it used on LI.
i have a 4000 evict and it makes a loud sound when casting as the braid is coming off, doesn't go very far as well
That sound can only come from the spool, the guides, or the line.
reach out to their facebook page. reel service can help
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ok thanks, im thinking it wasn't spooled correctly. I also have 20lb power pro on it, could the brand be the problem?
John, what was the jacket you wore in the 2nd clip?
It's this one - amzn.to/2VnNOfG
John Skinner Fishing aha. Thank ye sir.
John do you change the split rigs?
I change nothing on the Dark Matter plugs. On the Rebels I've been using the factory rings, but that might screw me eventually.
are you going to FL again for the winter?
Yes. Florida videos in about a week.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing great. i was just in marco island and caught a number of large sheepshead over 18"
How do you cut the side of the video? I have a video of catch a day time 52 pound striped bass but I need to edit out some landscape
Hi Skyler! Congrats on that bass! I saw a picture of it. I use Adobe Premiere. Click on "Effects", drag "Crop" to the video clip. Then you can use sliders to adjust.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thank you
Would you use a Tsunami Salt X over a Van Staal? I have never used a Tsunami Salt X and wondering about getting one.
My Van Staal is 20 years old, so I can't make a fair comparison to the SaltX. For the extra cost I would hope the Van Staal is better.
You cannot even compare a VS to a salt x
Van staal is beyond superior to the salt x. Love my vs200. It’s fantastic if you’re planning to fish off jetties, rough surf, etc.
ive had one. two other people I fish with have them (saltx) and they have had funny issues without much use. Mine got noisy, my friends locked up on him, my other friend had his drag giving him issues. We all take care of our stuff after each outing...idk I got a used vs200 and its perfect. Look for a vs in the used market I would say.
Is the st. Croix premier a good flunking rod?
My brother has the spinning version and he loves it so much
They make excellent rods, and some are great for fluking.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks
@@jamesmcclelland869 Thanks, do you know if he uses a mh or h
Dude doesn't your arm and/or wrist ever get sore after a while? Mine do 😂😂😂
Elbow sometimes.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing the worst is when the pain comes and you hook into a decent fish. Sometimes it's like DAMN fish give me a second to recoup 😂😂😂 I've been using your technique with the plugs and have been slamming Striper. Thanks for the great videos man, they've helped me out in becoming a better fisherman.
