I suspect the sound quality is better in the older model. The speaker may/may not be any bigger in the old one, but the more substantial cabinet and forwards facing speaker would certainly help. The first time I heard a (slightly newer, all white) Ferguson portable, I was shocked at the awful sound.
I'm still using a Toshiba portable in my workshop where I do a lot of video repairs on RUclips. Having a CRT set which actually shows you what the video signal is doing, is better than an LCD which shows it's own interpretation of the video signal, possibly with noise reduction and other signal processing going on.

One of the sets we rented from MultiBroadcast/Radio Rentals was a TX90 - the push button version - DER (they had only just disappeared under MultiBroadcast in Walsall, though Chesterfield still had a DER shop for years) model number was something like 8940 (though that sounds more like a Baird one), but the Ferguson equivalent was 37140C. The UHF version of the one you have there is 37141A. I used an aerial switch to switch between the aerial (loop or roof) and the computer (had a Spectrum and later a Sinclair PC200) as a rule, as I was concerned about the fragility of the aerial socket. My dad also thought the set had "quick start"/"instant on" - possible, I guess, as there was some transformer noise even when switched off. I take it the telescopic aerial was normal on the multiband version? A loop was fitted atop on the UHF.

Later the non-remote 'cost reduced' ferguson could have the TX85 chassis fitted in that cabinet model 14D1, this was a smaller one-chip design with switchmode power supply replacing the transformer and a recessed rear carry handle. Also available in monitor-style cabinet where the pcb was laid flat, model 14J1 and variants in different colours.

It's nice to see people keeping these old things going. I've got an old CRT myself which I need to fix and clean up, it's a 14 inch Sanyo from around 1983. The only problems it seems to have is a slightly slanted picture and the volume knob crackles when turning it.

    • @IrishvintageTVRadio

Some switch cleaner on the volume control and straighten the scan coils. I like the little Sanyos.

Always impressed by the Older Nordmende Chassis/Toshiba Tube version . I remember when I went past VisionHire in Llandudno, there used to be on of those older MovieStar sets in the window, and I was always impressed with the Picture Quality , for the time it was Very Good.

Agreed, and the Toshiba black strip type gives a great account of its self.

I remember these sets well, as you say, the aerial socket was a common fault.
They were a great seller second hand, as they looked modern & had a good picture, I used one with a damaged cabinet for years in the workshop, but lack of scart sealed it's fate!

    • @IrishvintageTVRadio
      @IrishvintageTVRadio  4 года назад +6

      Wasn't scart a pain though.

@@IrishvintageTVRadio What was scart used for? I've seen the scart sockets in other videos but never found out what was plugged into them. Were they for connecting a VCR, or a pay TV system?

Saw a boxed example on eBay recently, although a standard push-button affair, came sporting a (home-computer-friendly) DIN RGB input. A cover plate instead proudly adorning the top-right corner with 'TX with RGB' emblazoned across it. Very nice! :)

I'm rather fortunate that I have accumulated a collection of large, higher Wattage soldering irons that are useful for soldering items like that socket to the tuner module can, or soldering ground braid to a steel radio chassis. Mine are all vintage ones, but you can find similar irons used for stained glass work if you can't find an old style one.

The later one looks neater but I like a forward-facing speaker which is something very rare on modern TVs

Judging tv pictures through youtube video processing and only on a 15" laptop is a bit difficult.
The tx 90 is a cute set and it reminds me of an old b&w Rambler 12 inch, it was a bronze colour.
It had a vertical board and an odd philips tube that was incompatable with ordinary ones.
    Swines lol.
The Ferguson has a nice chassis design, i like that for some reason.
Both sets are nice, the pictures look the same apart from the tx90 being over saturated a bit.
Your workshop is smashing, the bits that clutter the side table is normal for a working place.
Don't worry about it, if a workshop is too pretty you have too much time on your hands ha ha :-D
John would love your workshop, i'm sure he would have.
