    I had a couple of these, modified the 26inch to have an RGB Scart socket and a half-baked attempt at widescreen switching. Well, it did switch the height but didn't adjust the EW correction.
    I've got quite a few photos of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics being shown on that set, they were broadcast 16:9 widescreen on D2-MAC.
    There were 1250-line HD trials back then, I think the Olympics were a test for the system.

    I used to buy the ex rentals, repair and resell them. mainly bomb proof with a few weaknesses as you say. Regun Tubes were cheap from East London. We all loved sticky back plastic - it covered a multitude of sins. I love seeing all of your NOS spares, I thought I had a few, but I think it shows what a busy life you have lived in the industry. Keep up the good videos and memories

      I use to buy these tubes for £30 from Chromavac in Manchester, they were slight seconds in that they had convergence magnets round the neck when they should have been self converging in manufacture , many thanks for the comment, would be so nice if we could turn back time and go back to those days .

      @@michaeldranfield7140 I think those times must be our 'Haydays'. I used to visit Capital Regun Tubes in Hackney, owned by a chap called Angus - His neighbour was one Les McKeown, better known as the lead singer of Bay City Rollers!

    I remember renting one of these models from Radio Rentals back in the day. Back in a time when renting tv was a fairly normal thing to do for many families.

    Yes the Amstrad's were always a ready source of tubes for all the other (nicer!) sets that needed them. Good workhorses these Thorn sets..and tried 'n' tested for many years in the field, so plenty of well-documented fault finding/ stock faults. Good stuff :)

    I am fairly certain the first Logik sets, a brand that was exclusive to Currys and Dixons were TX10's. Pretty good quality sets I seem to recall.

    • @michaeldranfield7140
      @michaeldranfield7140  3 года назад +3

      yes Logik branded sets were thorn , the one I remember branded Logik was the TX90 and at the time Ferguson dealers were not happy as the Currys Dixons logik branded sets undercut the Ferguson branded set .

    Yes indeed it was a combined switched mode psu and EHT transformer. It was the same one used in the Bang & Olufsen of the time.... Yes, the green LED on the tube base board was a 2.2volt ref. .... I saw quite a few with poor pictures that made the tube look flat... However, what I found was, if you followed the setup procedure for that section, they actually came up like new... quite stunning at the time....

    It was a shame about the short life of the 30 AX tubes as they gave a good pictue .you are right about the newer ons having a plastic chassis.

      I still have the promotional video on the 30AX tube , would be interesting to put it on youtube if I knew how ,Thorn sets always gave a good picture when new but faded so quickly as you say.

      I would like to find some more 80 s TV set s but you just done see them anymore and the ones that pop up on e bay from time to time are usually too far away to collect, loved the TX100 , if anything a slightly better set than the TX10 .

    Oh dear I used to service these myself at RR when they were new . I've forgotten a lot about them though. Focus units , tripping faults , as you say the 110degree tubes didn't last as well in these as the Amstrads . But Amstrads had a built in self destruct mode with underated electrolytic capacitors everywhere. Perhaps you've lost the 12 volt supply that feeds the remote control board as I didn't see any standby LED ? .

      Radio rentals, we had one of those in out town and as a kid I use to climb into there dustbin at night and look for pcb s , this was the time when they had huge industrial dustbins on wheels , never found any boards though only faulty components !
      After the video I did find the wire had come out of the plug and with this sorted the set powered up, EHT rose to 10Kv and I could here frame scan coils buzzing and then set tripped out, so its back in the store room now .

    • @glpilpi6209
      @glpilpi6209 3 года назад +1

      If it's been in the damp a pound to a penny it has a shorted turn in the scan coils causing it to trip.

    Baird, of course, was Radio Rentals' brand. Most post-1968 Baird sets were Thorn, but not all - there were a few other makes including Körting that carried the name. Even pre-1968, some sets had the name on that were other makes, e.g. GEC.
    I never handled a TX10. I did once assist the man from Radio Rentals with a repair to a TX9 we were renting.

      @@michaelwaite6725 don't know why but on GEC and the Thorn sets with plastic cabinets people always use to put there hand on the cabinet when changing channel , thus wearing away the brown finish until the black plastic was visible .

      That's right the cabinets looked awful eventually , I also seem to recall that a lot of the sets of that era had touch tuning pads that became almost completely disabled by the simple application of spray furniture wax lovingly applied on a weekly basis.
