As stated by a few others. The ice factory suffered severe damage with the Azan's warehouse fire. Correction to some, this is not a government owned operation. There was ice on the road after the fire and therefore you would be able to buy those while stocks lasted at existing prices. For the increased demand during the season, the company would have been forced to purchase elsewhere. To move ice, one would need a refrigerated container. Not just a cold or cool one, but a frozen one that stays frozen (extra cost compared to standard container which is not cheap). To import just about anything, fire or not, there are duties and taxes. Once here and cleared, what is not on the road, is going to have to be stored, cold storage. Costs will add up. In all this, please remember, something we feel is as basic is ice, produced locally or overseas, is indeed a luxury good.
